Practicing Dying
by Lonny Brown, HHc. |

One day in my boyhood, when I was still young enough to get around on bicycles, I discovered that by falling on the ground and going limp, I could get out of my body. It was a most enjoyable experience, floating free, above my physical form. I remember regretting having to "come down" when some passersby asked if I was okay. I noticed the extra split-second it took to reoccupy my body and answer. Yes, I said; I was only "playing dead."
Once or twice thereafter, I succeeded in re-creating my first astral projection experience by falling off my bike, laying very still and relaxing deeply. But I also soon came to sense the common taboo against such childhood psychic phenomena, and like most successfully socialized youth, eventually began ignoring, denying and forgetting such transcendental powers.
Years later, Raymond Moody's best-selling. book, Life After Life, chronicled many out-of-body experiences (OBE) of people who had been declared clinically dead and come back to talk about it. Invariably, these accidental tourists preferred their release to the re-entry, and were thereafter completely free of all fear of death. I knew exactly what they meant.
As with many of my boomer contemporaries, similar metaphysical milestones were facilitated for me by psychedelic catalysts. On one revelatory outdoor night-time acid trip deep in the campgrounds of the Canadian northeast, I had the extraordinary experience of going into a dark tent and seeing the whole brilliant universe arrayed before me and all around me. It was similar to the well-known medieval illustration of a man poking his head through the sky into the vast space of the starry night beyond. For one sweet timeless moment, I absolutely knew the infinite, from the inside out. It was an exhilarating transcendental realization, admittedly drug-induced, yet absolutely authentic, and commensurate with my childhood OBE's.
Immortality Within
Western society worships youth and mythologizes old age and death. Even our religions shy away from talking about death and dying. There is ample protocol for preparing for death of course - saying goodbye, the last will & testament, last rites - but not much on how to die. Mostly we are concerned with comfort on this side, not finding the way out and through to the great beyond.
It's different in the East, where skillful dying is an accepted spiritual science, and people routinely practice letting go of the body in anticipation of an easier - possibly more enlightened - passing. Tibetans recite navigation directions to the dying and the recently-deceased, facing the daunting realms beyond the physical. The key of course is letting go of one's identity with material form and realizing that consciousness is omnipresent.. and deathless.
Meditating in graveyards helps remind practitioners of their mortality, while certain breathing exercises and internal awareness techniques induce the deepest levels of quiescence in body and mind. A systematic sense-withdrawal technique (pratyahara), enables one to disconnect from the five senses and identify with the receiving witness itself. (Sensory deprivation tanks can accomplish the same result: an inner knowing of one's non-physical being.) It's a very liberating experience. Just as the prospect of falling asleep holds no fear for most people, through regularly revisiting the threshold and peering beyond, one's approaching termination becomes familiar rather than threatening territory, and the great insight dawns that the hereafter is a continuation of an omnipresent, universal awareness in the eternal now.
Tips for Practicing Dying
Become completely familiar with your own mortality.
Relax. Let go of everything, over and over.
Time is relative, and precious.
Be still and know I AM.
You've been here before. Be Here Now.
Whatever arises is actually in your mind.
Thoughts are not you.
Only the miniscule ego fears.
The Universal is everywhere, within and without.
