Winter Solstice

by Kami McBride
As the days become shorter and the darkness settles in it is a good time to take stock of what you are thankful for. I am personally very thankful for the joy of our son Gabriel who is just about one and a half years old. I am especially grateful for my mothers’ good health after a very arduous battle with breast cancer.

As the holiday season approaches ask yourself what it is that you would like to celebrate this year. What is it that is sacred to you? How do you celebrate in a way that nourishes and heals you?

I hear so many of my clients and students talk about how insanely busy they get this time of year and how the result is being worn out and run down. Perfect conditions for getting sick. Take a moment to think about what the Christmas season really means to you and how you can celebrate in a way that is rejuvenative and healing.

The winter solstice is a time when the veil is thin between the physical and spiritual worlds. This increased availability of spiritual energy drives some people mad; it is truly the season when more people die than any other time of year. Depending on how you relate to this threshold of darkness and deeper dreaming, it can also be a time of profound insight and healing. Indeed it is the season associated with miracles.

Winter solstice is the darkest night of the year. The animals are resting more; the plants have sent their energy underground to the roots. It is a time of dreaming about the seeds that you will plant in the coming months. A time to release what is no longer needed and set the intention for the resolutions of the New Year. The old year dies and life is born anew. People throughout time have celebrated this return of the light, the rebirth of the sun as the solstice marks when the days begin to get longer and lighter.

As a culture we too continue the ancient lineage of celebrating this high holiday of changing seasons. It seems that something is out of whack about how we do it. Why is it that during the time when our biology asks for more rest and regeneration,, our holiday rituals have us running around exhausted and busier than any other time of year? Americans generate six million tons of trash between thanksgiving and Christmas and my practice is booming in January with all of the sickness that settles in after Christmas.

How can we find a balance between our need to honor the darkness and celebrate the birth of the son (sun)? Winter is a great time to engage in whatever practice that has you looking within. Writing about what you are grateful for. Doing whatever yoga, meditation or prayer practice that brings you to an introspective place. How do you access your deepest emotions? How do you release energy patterns in your body? Use the energy vortex of the season to potentiate your healing modalities. Get some bodywork or better yet, bring massage into your home. In my house we massage each other almost every evening, even if only for ten minutes.

As we use the darkness to draw us in, we touch the more intimate places in ourselves. Our celebration then comes from what is in our heart and what is truly meaningful to us. How do you harness the healing potential and celebrate this magical time of year?
