End of the Migration

I walked the beach of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, astonished by the presence of my companions, monarch butterflies flitting along the shoreline. Wasn't it only a short six weeks ago that they danced before my windshield while I drove along the highway of southern Ohio?
Unknowingly, I followed the migrating Monarchs to Mexico for my mother's birthday trip. Mom turned 80 on October 13th and my sister, Maryanne, planned a fabulous trip for the three of us to enjoy her timeshare in Cabo for Mom's birthday week.
It was the morning of our first day, and I walked the beach in the early hours to collect myself and absorb the beauty of this glorious place. I gazed in wonderment. Could the earth be more beautiful? And then they appeared. Yellow and soft green butterflies, heading south to the tip of the Baja peninsula, sprinkled amidst the Monarchs. Tears of inspiration welled up.
I realized that my travels led me to the end of the Monarch's migration. I sung aloud to the surf and sun and to these dainty flyers whose will and stamina astounded me. "I'm following you!"
The metaphor continues to teach me. Magic abounds when you open to the wonder of universal forces. My beach walk led to the amazing rock outcropping. I perceived it as a Mayan glyph face carved not by human hands, but by our elemental Mother, the pounding surf of the sea.
I felt like a little girl exploring this fantastic playground in nature. She came forward, the girl I once was, and for awhile, the adult moved aside and let her be in the middle of her wonder. I climbed the boulders and watched swirling waters fill tidal pools with rushing waves that swept me into a beautiful dream. As I played and the Monarch's floated by on the wind, I heard a butterfly communicate through my inner voice. "Bring her here. Bring Mother here among us, for we are the Mothers." The child in me giggled with delight.
Ageless Beauty
The next day, Mom and I walked to the rock outcropping.
She adored it and could see what I envisioned - ancient rock faces, animal figures, and spirit beings watching us from the silent and still center of the stony crags. We sat together leaning against the cool rocks. We grew quiet and then meditative. My mother prays every day, as is her spiritual practice; whereas I meditate. She joined me in my practice and our spirits communed in what felt like an intrauterine experience. Here we sat before the greatest womb of all, the sea. We were in one womb together. I was in her; she was in me; we were in the womb of the sea. It was quite a moment. As the Monarch Mothers floated by us, I sensed that that they were well pleased.
Weeks before our trip, Mom sent me an article from the Washington Times about the migrating Monarchs. I set it aside to read at a later time. Serendipitously, I chose to read it this morning to help me focus my thoughts before writing this newsletter.
One paragraph leapt off the page. The writer explained that the southern migrating Monarchs were the matriarchs of the generations to come, the children and grandchildren who would make the northern migration next year. They were the Mothers.
Mothers and daughters are cycling seasons that produce generations peopled with stories of life. My mother and I have migrated for many years, and the journey has led us to surmount the pitfalls of relationship, the challenges of life and death, and the evolution of our soul's connection.
She in her 80th and I in my 50th year have migrated, moving from one place to another. Ours will forever be an unfolding story. Subsequent chapters will be written or told by the generations to come. May the Monarchs forever guide the migrations of our children's children.
