The Ma'at Tarot Workbook
review by Bonnie Cehovet, TE
Author: Corrine Kenner
Deck By: Julie Cuccia-Watts
New Moon Trading Company/Lulu Press
2007
ISBN #978-0-9755510-3-5
"The "Ma'at Tarot Workbook" was written to act as a simplified guide to the "Ma'at Tarot" (Julie Cuccia-Watts, 2006). It is a 39 page, spiral-bound book, 8 1/2" by 11", of good quality paper with a glossy cover depicting a snowy white owl from the Six of Wands. Stunning cover!
In her introduction, Kenner talks about the "Ma'at Tarot", and its connection to the "Thoth Tarot". However, the "Thoth Tarot" is based on solar astrology (with its male associations), while the "Ma'at Tarot" is based on lunar astrology, with its female associations. This book acts as a compliment to the companion book that goes with the "Ma'at Tarot". Along with covering the back story of the decks creation, it also explains the symbols on the cards, and retells the myths and legends associated with each symbol.
Instead of being the "end card" the World is the center card in the presentation of this deck. The other cards form three circles around it, moving from the general concepts of the Aces to the specific details of the Major and Minor Arcana. The first graphic that we see is the World, surrounded by the four Aces. (note: All graphics are quality color scans of the cards.)
The next circle consists of the Cross-Quarter days ... the Summer Solstice (The Sun), First Harvest (The Hanged One), the Autumn Equinox (The Tower), Halloween (Judgment), the Winter Solstice (The Devil), Candlemas (The Wheel of Fortune), the Spring Equinox (The Fool), and May Day (The Lovers). There is a color graphic, as well as individual scans and a discussion of each card.
The third circle consists of the Lunar Months ... Capricorn (Hermit), Aquarius (The Star), Pisces (Temperance) Aries (Emperor), Taurus (Death), Gemini Strength), Cancer (The Magician), Leo (The Chariot), Virgo (The High Priestess), Libra (Justice), Scorpio (The Empress), and Sagittarius (The High Priest). The Moon itself serves as a representative whenever there is a Blue Moon, or a second full moon in any given month. There is a chart associating each Sun sign with its New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon and Last Quarter Moon. Each Full Moon is associated with a card from the Tarot, and is shown with a scan of that card and a short discussion.
The fourth circle consists of the 56 Minor Arcana cards. The Court Cards are interspersed with the Pips (numbered cards), as the numbered cards are associated with new and quarter moons, with the Full Moons going to the King, Queen and Princess cards. The Princes are placed at the four cardinal points ... the summer and winter solstice, and the spring and autumn equinox.
Starting with the first month of Autumn, we see the Two of Swords, the Three of Swords, the King of Swords, the Four, Five and Six of Swords, the Princess of Swords, and the Seven of Swords. The third month of Autumn shows the Eight and Nine of Swords, the Queen of Swords, and the Ten of Swords.
The first month of Winter shows the Ten of Wands, the Nine of Wands, the Queen of Wands, the Eight through Six of Wands, the King of Wands and the Five of Wands. The third month of winter shows the Four and Three of Wands, the Princess of Wands, and the Two of Wands.
The first month of Spring shows the Two and Three of Cups, the Princess of Cups, the Four through Six of Cups, the Queen of Cups, and the Seven of Cups. The third month of Spring shows the Eight and Nine of Cups, The King of Cups and the Ten of Cups,
The first month of Summer shows the Ten and Nine of Coins, the Queen of Coins, the Eight through Six of Coins, the King of Coins, and the Five of Coins. The third month of Summer shows the Four and Three of Coins, the Princess of Coins, and the Two of Coins.
The Princes guard the four cardinal points: The Prince of Swords guards the week of the autumnal equinox; the Prince of Wands guards the week of the winter solstice; the Prince of Cups guards the week of the vernal equinox; the Prince of Coins guards the week of the summer solstice.
I found the graphic representations here to be of very high quality, and lending to a much better understanding of this deck. The only quibble that I had is that in the promotion for this workbook it is advertised that in print version a mini-deck accompanies the book. Completely forgetting that this was Lulu Press, which has inherent limitations, I expected to see an actual deck. Small scale illustrations have been included at the end of the book, which the reader has the option of cutting out and turning into a deck themselves. It was a good thing that I had already decided to purchase the deck and book (by Julie Cuccia-Watts), because my arthritic hands would not have thanked me for taking that job on!
At the end of the book there is a full representation of all 78 cards and their positions, as well as an FAQ (frequently asked question) section. For those that are considering working with this deck, I highly recommend getting this book, along with the book that comes with the deck.
