Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy: The Awakening Generation

On Change

by Ann Marie Judge
Small Change is Big Change

People can’t be taught or learn from the experiences of people who they can’t relate to. Yes, radical people that do crazy things get a lot of attention and can reach large amounts of people. But in the end, the kind of lasting change and growth most people encounter is on a day-to-day level, one that is so small, you almost don’t notice anything is happening.

In fact, that’s usually the only way change works; if you notice something happening, you might be able to say, “Wait, I’m not supposed to like that!” “My mommy didn’t teach me to believe in that!” In a way, people that popularize something, that jump into the limelight and preach about how new and amazing and radical something is, are actually alienating people from what they’re doing. It’s the difference between reading in a magazine about lesbians trying to get married and have a happy family, and having a brother that’s gay trying to do the same thing. Things that are popular and famous look so big and so unreal; things that are everyday, close-to-home experiences are… well… real. You have to learn to accept them (or ignore them or hate them) because they’re right there, in your face; you’re forced to make a decision about what you believe, what you’re willing to accept, and what you just won’t touch.

People out there that are flashy, big, and loud about the changes they want to make and who they are make their point by being hard to understand; crazy fashions, wild lifestyles, and myriad other things that we “normal” people just can’t relate to. Yes, they get our attention. But the point remains, “While that could be interesting, I can’t really apply that to my life.” And many times, it just stops there, as valid as the point they’re making might be.

Besides, when someone does something huge, it often creates a schism; you’re either with them or you’re not. And while some people enjoy controversy and conflict, most people don’t really want to “stick out.” Safety zones are safe havens, and it often is more work than it’s worth to have an opinion or want to make any change.

When you’ve got something to teach the world, the last thing you want is to run into the I’ll-start-my-diet-tomorrow mentality.

When there’s someone in your life that is more or less a believable, law-abiding, moral, ethical, mildly interesting person, you don’t have to make a million leaps in thought to listen to what they have to say. You see them on a regular basis and watch their lifestyle choices and when you are basically convinced that they are a healthy person, you trust them to a degree and see validity in most of their opinions. What they do is real and attainable.

The Secret Allure of the Normal

On a deeper level, people want to know that the change in question will make them happier, will make them healthier somehow. That’s how “normal” people create change: You simply do what you do, and when people see that you’re healthy and happy, they say, “Hey… I want what she’s got!” It’s not big or flashy, and often, you don’t even know you’ve caused any change. But that’s the paradox of small change: it’s the smallest changes that create the biggest waves, because deep down, the change doesn’t occur in a boardroom or in Hollywood or on the oval office or in the living rooms of the rich. It happens when “normal” people don’t even notice they’ve started doing something different; when you don’t even realize that something has happened because it’s just what you do.

It’s like what someone on the production crew of the Lord of the Rings said in the “making of the movie” extended edition segment: “I don’t want people to watch these movies and say, ‘Wow, those were great special effects!’ because if they aren’t noticing anything, they are simply believing it is real. It doesn't even cross their minds to question it” It doesn’t even reach conscious though—there’s nothing to question, because it’s simply a reality.

Again, the paradox: when you don’t notice it, only then is it fully integrated into you.

Most people don’t even know what they’re doing or what they believe or who they really are because they just are. It takes very little excess energy to be yourself and do what you’ve always done.

Change for Fame versus Change for Real

Within all this lies the true test of whether someone just wants conflict or if they truly want people to understand and grasp the change they desire: if what they do intentionally alienates people, it’s fame and conflict that they love. Everyone knows people who seem to always be surrounded in conflict–and we all know that they love being in the spotlight. They’re in it for the spotlight, and their message is secondary. It’s there to boost them into the light, not be the light itself.

On the other side, the person who seeks to include as many as possible, wishes for people to understand the change or the message, and still respects the people who don’t, is one who truly loves his change and his beliefs. This is true because he understands at some point, some people may actually change their minds and if he were to alienate them all now, he would be taking away that possibility by turning them away before they even got to the door.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

These words of Gandhi's speak to the world of the kind of new change that needs to happen. That's exactly why each of us needs to take the change onto our own level, make it our own personal cause and our own belief—whatever it is you believe in. Environmental change, spiritual change, physical change, economical change, political change, social change, religious change... It's all ready to happen.

As we're going into a new year with new energies and new possibilities, everyone needs to take that deep breath we talked about last month; breathe in and manifest the changes in the world in your own thoughts, and then into your physical life. Only when everyone does this, when everyone becomes an advocate for their truth simply by living it in a loving way—instead of preaching against everyone else's and berating those who don't follow your way of thinking—will the true change occur.

Ann Marie Judge
Crystal Child, Student of Life, Spirituality, & Writer

Ann Marie graduated from high school in 2005. She attended Beloit College in Wisconsin for her freshman year of college and will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the spring of 2007 for photography.

Not yet old enough for acronyms at the end of her name, she considers herself a student of life, and has been deeply involved in the spiritual community since her first awakening at the age of twelve. Since then, she has had much education in the metaphysical and spiritual arts by a wide variety of teachers and healers. She was very quickly recognized as a Crystal and Indigo child, as well as a clairvoyant and intuitive.

Because she was able to begin living for the spiritual at a young age, her dream is to reach out through her writing to other young people that are experiencing similar awakenings while still being within the educational system and a society that often does not recognize or nurture young, spiritually-gifted ones. Her vision is to form a community of spiritually-minded young people so that the younger generations will be prepared to be guides and teachers as the spiritual consciousness of the world continues to rise.

Though much of her life is still largely potential, she feels this time in her life is the first step in fulfilling her dream of becoming a published writer so as to serve the children and young people of the world that feel the spiritual stirring within. As well, she hopes to educate parents on how to nurture and understand what is going on in their children's minds from a young person's perspective.
