Common Themes of
Venus-Pluto Aspects
©2006 by Donna Cunningham.

In drawing conclusions about the effects of various astrological aspects, we must not lose sight of one thing. Since AstroDataBank focuses on notables and how certain astrological factors work out in their lives, remember that the effect of an aspect like Venus-Pluto is bound to be larger than life with celebrities. Reading the delineations that follow, you shouldn’t conclude that your pretty young daughter with this aspect would become a First Lady. An aspect is but a piece of the whole, and what makes a person great—or newsworthy—is the totality. Likewise, your own relationship patterns—or those of anyone whose chart you are analyzing—do not consist of a single Venus aspect. For a fuller picture, blend all the aspects to Venus with the state of the 7th, 8th, and 5th houses and their rulers. With these reservations in mind, we can still learn some Venus-Pluto patterns from the descriptions that follow.

“SMOKIN’!!” Just as you’d imagine, a great deal of passion can be generated by combining Venus with Pluto. (They don’t form aspects so much as cohabit!) Among those with the conjunction, for instance, are Hollywood sex symbols like Antonio Banderas, Sean Penn, and Raquel Welch.

Where the combination is strong, the urge to merge with another through sexuality can become compulsive, even to the point of addiction. For others, physical conquest or seduction is more about power over the other person.

“IT’S NOBODY’S BUSINESS IF I DO.” For some Venus-Uranus natives, blatant sexuality is more to shock or to make a political statement than something hormonal. By contrast, Venus-Pluto natives may be even more sexually active than their Uranian counterparts but these highly private folks consider it nobody else’s business. In fact, secrecy enhances the passion.

Sexual intrigue, such as infidelity or the office affair, exerts a lure, the payoff being getting away with it or getting even with someone. They tend to feel more shame than remorse when the “dirty secret” leaks out—Bill Clinton, with the sextile, Rev. Jimmy Swaggart and Woody Allen with the square. The women involved in such scandals may have Venus-Pluto aspects, too—Hillary Clinton has the square, Mia Farrow has the trine, and Ivana Trump has the opposition. Why do they tend to turn a blind eye to their husbands’behavior? It may well have to do with the bottom line!

“THE WORLD REVOLVES AROUND SEX AND MONEY.” We had an old reprobate of a professor at college who adored saying that to shock us. He probably had a Venus-Pluto aspect, not to mention a fairly good grip on politics. Political savvy, combined with personal charm, give these folks the capacity to hobnob with the movers and shakers.

In lists of people with such aspects, you find many who married well in order to do some dynasty building. In researching the charts of the wives of presidents and politicians, I was fascinated to see how many of them had Venus in combination with Pluto—so many that I dubbed it the First Lady Aspect. Those who have it include Pat Nixon and Betty Ford with the trine and Eleanor Roosevelt, Hillary Clinton, and Maria Shriver—first lady of California—with the square[1]. Many British Royals share the aspect—Elizabeth II, Charles, Philip, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Prince Edward’s wife, Sophie Rhys-Jones. British Prime Minister Tony Blair has the trine, and by all accounts his wife has been an excellent support in his career.

Also among natives with this aspect are titans who use the lure of power and wealth to seduce those who find such qualities an aphrodisiac. These men seem to consider sex a perk of their position and may also sport a trophy wife. Some the tabloids would place in that category are Robert Kennedy and Howard Hughes with the opposition, and Henry Kissinger and Ted Turner with the trine.

“YOU AND ME AGAINST THE WORLD.” Many Plutonians suffer from fear of betrayal and lack of trust due to childhood traumas and losses. They’re often isolated, alienated, and consumed with shame, lest others discover the family secrets. When they find someone to trust, someone who seems to understand and accept them, the relationship becomes a bulwark against unbearable isolation.

Thus some of them have a terror of being abandoned and will do anything to keep the object of their love. Some Plutonians don’t have relationships, they take hostages. An individual with a Venus-Pluto aspect who isn’t Plutonian in all respects may nonetheless accept responsibility for making their Plutonian partner feel safe and loved, not an easy task when there has been serious wounding. As we will see later in analyzing the charts of Phil and Brynn Hartman, the end result of this intense need to possess can be toxic.

“MY LOVE WILL HEAL YOU.” The quasi-archetypal form of this belief was seen in the Superman movie where he turned the earth backwards so time would reverse and he could save Lois Lane. Some years ago, I discovered a chart that works for the Man of Steel, based on the time of the first Superman radio program: February 12, 1940, 5:15 PM, New York City. The chart, shown on the next page, has a close trine from Venus in Aries in the 8th to Pluto in Leo in the 12th.[2] Superman has an archetypal appeal in that in their heart of hearts, most men would love to be supermen, and in their heart of hearts, most women would love to find a hero.

Especially when Neptune aspects are also strong in the person’s chart, rescuing can become a strategy for avoiding abandonment. If fixing the other is the foundation of the relationship, there may be unconscious sabotage of the healing in order to bind the loved one close so that they can’t leave. The “patient” can come to resent being in this unequal position, ultimately feeling powerless and even suffocated by the rescuer. In the end, the “patient” may strike out through some sort of hurtful action, even a terrible betrayal that finally ends the relationship, but it is done almost as a form of self-preservation. If you have a Venus-Pluto aspect and a painful history of being betrayed in relationships, you might consider whether the dynamic of rescuing played a part in the patterns.

[1] Subsequent research with AstroDataBank revealed that several of these political wives had Mars-Pluto aspects as well.

[2] The Superman chart is for December 12, 1940, at 5:15 PM in New York City. I based it on the date and time of the first broadcast of the Superman radio serial, as listed the New York Times for that date.

Astrologer
& Healer

Donna Cunningham is an internationally respected astrologer and the author of 13 books on metaphysical topics.

Donna Cunningham has a dual background in astrology and psychotherapy, with a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and over 30 years experience as a professional astrologer. She considers doing the astrology charts of children to be a sacred trust. It is a way of knowing who these Indigo children are on their own terms rather than as their families, teachers, and society expect them to be.

In these sessions, she focuses on typical childhood concerns such as family and peer relationships, the best educational approaches, and the child's special gifts and abilities. She can be reached for consultations at (503)291-7891, by email, or at her web page. Ask about her special rate for children's charts.

Donna is also co-editor of Vibration and a frequent contributor. She has written fourteen books on astrology and other metaphysical topics, including her Flower Remedies Handbook. Astrologers who want to know the special considerations involved in doing children's charts can read the chapter on this topic in Donna's text, The Consulting Astrologer's Guidebook.

Listed in several Who’s Who volumes, she has given seminars on astrology around the world and won the prestigious Regulus Award at the 1998 UAC.
