Astrologer's Notes:
AstroDPsychology:A Synthesis

House Outcomes
Vary Over Time

by Glenn Perry, Ph.D., MFT
In recent columns, we've been exploring how planets correspond to specific behaviors, attitudes, and affect states that are situationally (house) specific. A planet's overall level of integration determines whether its functioning will be positive or negative within the house it tenants.

While the strength or weakness of a planetary position can, in part, be determined by it's sign, house, and aspects, this is not the same thing as the functionality of a planet. Strength/weakness refers to how dominant the planet is in the overall life and character of the person. Functionality/dysfunctionality relates to how capable the person is of expressing that planetary function in a manner that leads to fulfillment. This is what I mean by integration; the more integrated the planet, the more capable the person is of accessing that function, modulating its expression, and satisfying it's motivating need.

A planet can be strong and functional, strong and dysfunctional, weak and functional, or weak and dysfunctional. In actuality, even these four divisions are somewhat arbitrary, as planetary expression is likely to fall somewhere on a continuum of strong/weak and functional/dysfunctional. Also, planets express themselves in different ways at different stages, tending to become stronger and more functional over time. Astrology, as I've said before, is complicated; it is unwise to assume one knows a person simply from their birthchart.

As always, content mirrors process. The specific, concrete manifestations of a planet (content) always reflect the planet's degree of integration along a continuum of functionality (process). Again, functionality is a measure of the person's capacity for fulfilling the core needs associated with that planet.

Let's consider that old malefic, Saturn. Ancient astrology presumed that nothing good could come from this 'evil' planet. Its placement in certain signs or houses portended unremitting doom and gloom. Twenty-first century psychological astrology, however, recognizes that Saturn can symbolize a variety of possible outcomes depending upon a person's maturity and level of self-actualization. What is true at one stage of a person’s life may not be true at a later stage, since Saturn has a tendency to mature the individual in precisely those areas it is located. As maturation is a process, Saturn can manifest differently at different stages of development. The Saturnian drive for perfection may result in frustration and pessimism at one stage, and later become a spur to great achievement.

Imagine, for example, that Saturn is in Cancer in the 8th. Traditional astrology would consider this an unfortunate placement, as Saturn in Cancer is in its "fall" (the sign opposite its domicile) and thus "weak", a problem further compounded by its location in a house associated with darkness and death (the 8th). A typical interpretation might go something like: "The native will suffer endless sexual frustration, an impoverished home life, financial ruin due to partnership, and early death from suffocation."

An actual case history, however, might reveal a more nuanced outcome. A hypothetical 29 year-old woman admits that she does suffer a lack of sexual fulfillment due to an emotionally cold, withholding partner (whom, we may surmise, embodies her own fear of losing control). In addition, her real estate mogul spouse is controlling of their shared finances, e.g., he puts her on a rigid "allowance" and does not allow her access to credit cards. She's so depressed that she considers suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge (death by suffocation).

Instead of jumping off the bridge, however, let's jump forward in time. At 29, her situation was barely tolerable, and by Saturn's opening square to itself at 36, she files for divorce. Gaining access to 50% of workaholic ex-husband's net worth, she learns to invest her money systematically, making wise and measured financial decisions with the help of a financial expert. By Saturn's opposition at 42, she has earned her own real estate license, gone into business for herself, and negotiates loans on her client's behalf. Subsequent to undergoing a brief period of supportive therapy, during which she resolves a childhood trauma with an abusive father, she meets a new, caring man and experiences sexual fulfillment for the first time in her life.

Such a developmental process would be consistent with Saturn in Cancer in the 8th. Let's reflect on the above case history. At twenty-nine, the woman was so fearful of failure that she experienced a paralyzing block. She abdicated control to an oppressive husband, which created a painful imbalance of power both sexually and financially. Unfulfilled and frustrated, she gradually grew determined to take charge and work toward greater satisfaction and mastery in both areas—sexual intimacy and financial power. Once committed, she pursued her goals with unwavering determination and persistence, ultimately becoming an authority in the specialized area of her choice—real estate (Cancer). Likewise, her early lack of sexual fulfillment evolved into a deep, satisfying relationship. This hypothetical unfoldment of events exemplifies a Saturnian process of maturation over time. What traditional astrology would regard as a weak, dysfunctional placement is transformed into a strong, functional one.

Such a gradual maturation of ability is not limited only to Saturn but can occur for other planets as well. Ideally, no planetary function remains the same. All evolve. As planets become integrated with one another, and as each becomes more fully conscious and actualized within the psyche, the person progresses along a continuum from relatively painful states to more satisfying ones. Planets that are weak can become strong; planets that are dysfunctional can become functional. The Sun becomes less arrogant and more confident; the Moon becomes less clinging and more caring; Mars becomes less angry and more bold, Venus less possessive and more secure, Jupiter less dogmatic and more optimistic, Uranus less unstable and more resilient, Neptune less tragic and more compassionate, and Pluto less paranoid and more regenerative.

From this we can conclude the following: A good chart consultation does not give people a frozen snapshot of their life forever fixed in a singular, unalterable fate; rather, it offers them a glimpse of a moving picture that develops toward richer, more rewarding outcomes over time.
