Half Century of Living

Dear Friends,
On a snowy morning in late December I sat at my desk and stared out the window, mesmerized by the falling crystalline flakes. I sat in wonder. December is a magical and mystical month for me because it is the month of my birth.
Each December, I take the whole month to reflect and prepare for the coming year. This past December, a kind of stillness, a peaceful repose settled upon me, which delighted me after a very challenging year of forging the steel required to embrace this particular birthday. On December 30, 2006, I turned 50 years old. Five decades of life, one half a century of living. A time of fullness, a time of reckoning, a time to celebrate the woman I’ve become.
In my work with clients, we delve deeply into the archetypes of self the child, teen, adult and wise one within our nature of being. We work in the turbulent thirties to retrieve the soul of the child and often in the forties it is the teen that requires nurturance and reassurance. In the fifties, I often discover a reflective aspect in a woman who seeks spiritual direction. I feel her stop and watch the inner archetypes as they cry out with needs or hide in the shadows of self. A woman at fifty seems to have a secret mechanism installed within her psyche that allows her to reflect rather than react.
She appears to realize that she simply has more choices. I admire that trait and find that a woman of the 50’s decade, if she has done the homework of self healing required in previous decades, appears to take things more in stride. She has often raised her family, with children in college, and/or she’s made her mark in the world of career, and she sees that now, this decade is her own. She becomes almost virginal again, because she is One unto Herself. Comfortable in her own skin, she is free of the desperate need to follow another in seek of approval. She follows her own lead.
Ownership is what the fifties feel like to me. Not an ‘all about me’ decade that can detract from spiritual growth. Rather, the fifties can be a decade of acceptance of the whole of self, the centering place on the circle of life, where you witness the experiences of the child, teen, adult, and then look to the wise one within for guidance. It is a decade of reflection rather than reaction.
The gift of acquired wisdom gained from the life experiences of fifty years is the precious treasure of a distillation of self. A fifty year old woman often finds that people and situations that once triggered emotional reaction can become something to ponder and find simply interesting to watch. To sit and observe your life with interest and curiosity is a marvelous teaching. Witnessing without the need to take action can bring profound revelations.
I like to imagine that turning 50 is like joining a secret society. You are ushered through a private gateway where once crossed, you find your wise inner self who appears as the special helper and companion to the adult archetype within you. Finally, the responsible adult, the mother, the career woman, can be nurtured for she has a confidant in the Wise Inner Self. Meaningful dialogue is fostered at this coming of age between the adult and wise one aspects of self. An exchange begins that rewards you with insight and powerful guidance, peppered with humor and the ease of understanding that life was never as serious as you made it appear.
Oftentimes, I talk with clients about the nature of discovering and developing a relationship with their Inner Teacher. Meaningful outer reflections of teachers are so significant in the pathfinding required to discover the realm of the Inner Teacher. It takes time, maybe fifty years of life, before the wise inner self emerges as the guide.
The previous decades are fraught with roadblocks to this path leading to the teacher within. I wrote Wisdom Walks In Circles during my early forties in an effort to find this pathway, chronicling all the stumbling blocks I encountered in this effort. A full understanding of this process and discovery of deeper meanings of this text surprised and delighted me when I created an online course curriculum based on this book.
In my mid to late forties I wrote Landings, a book about healing from dissociation resulting from sexual abuse. This book often mystified me and it definitely challenged every nuance of my self- esteem. I persevered with this heartbreaking story because I’d witnessed so many women broken from abuse, in need of soul retrieval and spiritual healing that merged with psychological therapies. Now I sit and face a mountain of research compiled on a chair in my office my next book, which will be written in my early fifties. I wonder what adventure in self-discovery will this project come to bear?
I write to observe and understand myself as an individual, a storyteller, and a spiritual healer. The characters that come to me are so real, with palpable and poignant points of view. They teach me about myself in relation to others, and they garner new knowledge that appears to fall into my psyche from the ethers above. I feel so fortunate to have a life where I can do what I love. Writing is truly breathing for me, for nothing feels quite as life affirming as staring out my window on a snowy morning, sharing my thoughts in written form.
