Agate
Talisman Stone for Business

by Raven
Agate is believed to have been among man’s earliest possession; Stone Age trinkets along with spear and arrow tips have been found in prehistoric grave sights. Magicians were warned to avoid Agates, which exhibited a pattern like hyena’s hide said to bring domestic turmoil. Stones, which resembled a lion’s skin, were said to be potent against poisons, and more potent when worn on a cord made of lion’s mane hair.

Modern Practioner of Metaphysics list numerous attributes of Agate, most qualities deal with enhanced communication abilities. Agate is said to increase the ability to make connection between the physical and spiritual worlds and a known popular talisman stone for business. It is believed to enhance meditative states and a focal point in contemplation, stone to bring good luck, good health, wealth and happiness.

Prehistoric grave sights – found Stone Age trinkets, spear and arrow tips

3500 B.C. – Egyptians were mining agate and early Sumerian inhabitants of
Mesopotamia fashioned cylinder seals, signet rings and beads, ornamental objects

372 – 287 B.C. – Greek writer Theophrastus referred to beautiful stones found in the river Achates or Gagates in Sicily

77 A.D. – Pliny the Elder, states – in older times Achates was highly valued – looking at an Agate rests the eyes and an agate held in the mouth will quench the most desperate thirst – it occurs in large masses and in various colors.
He catalogue the varieties of Agate:
- Iaspisachates – Agate – Jasper
- Cerachates – Chalcedony
- Smaragdachates – Green Agate
- Haemachates – Red Agate or Agate with Red
- Leucachates – Chalcedony
- Dendrachates - Moss Agate
- Autachates –possibly Amber when burned smells like Myrrh
The Coralloachates, most likely Lapis Lazuli, was described as spotted all Over like Sapphirus with drops of gold found in Crete also known as “Sacred Agate” – capable of curing the sting of poisonous spiders and scorpions

2nd Century B.C. – Damigeron states – the Agate stone has great powers and if it has a color like that of lion’s skin, it is powerful against scorpion bites – if it is tied on or rubbed on with water, it immediately takes away all the pain and cures the bite of a viper. Roman Gladiators favored “Lion Agate”(red-yellow type) as a source of strength and courage

Hebrew Tradition – associated Agate with the lion. A hair plucked from a lion’s mane was a source of courage for the Jews. Agate was considered a suitable substitute- the stone and the lion were intertwined in their power. This is
Thought to be the source of the connection of Agate with the Zodiac Sign Leo.

Roman Tradition – a wrestler who wears Agate is invincible only if the stone is of true color. A tester would place a stone of Agate in a pot of hot oil, in 2 hours of boiling; a genuine Agate will tint the oil. This method when reversed is the primitive method to dye Chalcedony.

Pliny states – Agate was used in the preparation of medicine and named varieties with curative powers:
- Green Stone – powdered Agate from India – remedy for eye disease
- Red Agate – from Egypt or Crete – cure for spider, scorpion bites
He further states mortar and pestles of Agate were used by Roman Physicians to grind their medicines. Agate was also used to make cups for serving and consuming wine, cooling off the beverage

4th Century – Physiologus, Greek Author states Agate is useful in searching for Pearls. Agate stone was lowered on a cord to near the bottom of the sea – as it descended the suspended stone would turn toward the location of a pearl, a diver who follows the cord will be rewarded with a pearl bearing oyster

Myths, Legends & Lore’s:

Ancient Egyptians: Held that each color of Agate, white, gray, dull, red, blue, yellow, brown, possesses distinct and separate virtues. They made images of their gods in each of these colors. When ma-nao is written in Chinese characters, the term is preceded by the symbols for jewel or precious stones. A popular notion still exists in China that Agates are created when they are spit from a horse’s mouth. The story of crystal quartz being petrified ice is paralleled in Chinese folklore – Agate is the frozen blood of departed ancestors
