A Deeper Thanks

by Rev. David Ault
At this time of year, the reminder to focus our attention on what we are thankful for seems to rain down as steady as the shedding leaves. And, though I’ll always be a stirring advocate for gratitude in any way shape or form, I believe most of us attempting to live consciously are being called to welcome in a deeper form of thanks.

What do I mean by deeper?

Well, it’s relatively easy to give thanks for the roof over one’s head when there is one. What about giving thanks after hurricane winds, flooded streams or burning flames seem to take it away in an instant?

I’ve recently been a part in assisting a congregant of mine piece back together his home. A year and some months after Hurricane Katrina filled it with flood waters as if it was a designated swimming pool, the time and emotional distance has helped him discover that deeper thanks. As I work side by side with him, I am humbled by his commitment to see the good.

It feels easy to celebrate and thank our Supreme Being when our loved ones all sit safe at the table, their heads bowed in prayer. What about still giving thanks when the ravages of war, a car accident or an untimely prognosis escort them from the Earth?

Ever spoken to a mother whose child has just passed away? I did after delivering a talk in New York this past year. She smiled that deeply rich soul-smile that spoke of a deeper thanks for the seven years she had with her daughter rather than how leukemia had robbed her of a longer relationship. Again, with great humility I stood before this unassuming woman and saw spiritual mastery at work.

It certainly feels reasonable and fair to thank those who have loved and supported us so faithfully day after day, season after season. What about seeing the good in those who’ve seemingly broken our hearts, broken our trust, and shattered our peace?

My friend Bill shared with me the story of a 15 year old who’s now the spokesperson for a national Aids prescription drug distribution program. Their efforts to lobby Congress for more funding will provide medication for patients experiencing financial challenges. This boy’s father injected him with virus tainted blood when he was 11 months old in hopes of avoiding child support payments. After a torturous road of medical obstacles, this young example of optimism wants the opportunity to sit and talk with his imprisoned father. Why? - to offer thanks for helping teach him a life of compassion and service through his own journey with AIDS. Another humbling for me – another spiritual master walking among us.

It’s certainly glorious to voice our thanks when our bank accounts are full and our kitchens well-stocked. What about celebrating when bankruptcy and foreclosure loom and the cupboards are bare?

My cupboards are certainly not bare but with the transition from a life of ministry on the road providing income from book and CD sales plus speaker fees to my current life as a minister of a new start- up Religious Science church here in Mobile, AL, I’ve recently experienced the appearance of a drastic income reduction. Did I express a deeper, all-knowing thanks for the good I DO possess? Embarrassingly – no. I watched as an old stale panic began to set in.

Not the stuff of spiritual mastery.

With these current end of year holiday experiences, I seriously have the opportunity to consider taking my personal thanks a little deeper. Will you join me?

If we say that God is omniscient, omnipresent – in and through all things, then we must look at that word – ALL.

When we are asked to honor the journey, we are offered a chance to create a conscious life review which always shows through glorious hindsight how such a thing as Divine order must reside in the ALL.

Sure there are areas where time and distance make this kind of thankfulness easier. What I’m suggesting is taking some freshly “charged”, seemingly difficult person, place or experience and sending it a sincere thanks now - a vision of well-being and authentic gratitude.

It’s the approach of spiritual mastery and my willingness to consider and change my ways is right there along with yours.

May we grow together and experience deeper thankfulness and connection this holiday season.

David Ault
Visionary Vocalist, Author & Motivational Speaker
David Ault is highly regarded as one of the finest visionary vocalists and motivational speakers within the New Thought/transformational movement.

His focus on remembering the Divine within and reclaiming that connection has empowered hundreds of thousands on their spiritual journey. The union of David’s charismatic message and heartfelt singing has elevated him to guest speaker of choice in many nationwide churches and global organizations.

As a licensed minister and practitioner through Religious Science International, as well as author, songwriter/recording artist, David has traveled and shared his gifts for well over fifteen years.

Working closely with notables Louise Hay and Marianne Williamson and sharing the stage with many cherished mentors ranging from the late Og Mandino to Dr. Barbara King, Jerald Jampolsky, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Father Leo Booth and Mary Manin-Morrisey, David harvested that experience and developed his own unique style of teaching. His compassionate presence, warmth and humor continue to be an unforgettable guidepost for audiences as they rediscover and reawaken to their personal magnificence.

Starting out as a professional actor and singer, David worked extensively in Broadway tour shows, film and television winning critics awards in both New York and Los Angeles.

Throughout the 1980’s, David, along with the late Jerry Florence and Keith Kimberlin made their mark in New thought history by helping pioneer an unexplored musical genre—visionary vocal music. Known as Alliance, their remarkable blend became legendary, helping establish them as one of the most successful vocal groups in the Spiritual recording field.

David continues this musical path with the release of his critically acclaimed recordings, The Healing Bridge, Travelin’ With The Angels, All Is Calm, All Is Bright, And Then It Is Morning, all distributed through his Los Angeles based organization, The Conscious Company. Now, his highly anticipated literary debut, Where Regret Cannot Find Me, is heralded as “a fresh and exciting discovery in Spiritual literature ... a work of pure heart!”

“I feel extremely blessed and grateful in following this path”, says David. “It is my ongoing intention to create a message in word and music that assists us all in reawakening to our personal magnificence!”
