Capricorn:
Patterns and Behaviors

"Oh," you might be thinking, "this does not apply to me. I'm not a Capricorn." Don't be so sure! What you mean is that your Sun Sign is not Capricorn. The rising sign is a place in your horoscope that is calculated from your birth TIME. Capricorn is the rising sign approximately two hours EVERY DAY. That stamps you with the sign of the goat also. That's not all. The planet Saturn will carry the themes of Capricorn into your horoscope if it is strategically placed; i.e., close to your Sun, Moon or rising sign. This all goes to say that a professional astrologer, to identify any particular theme, must analyze the complexities of the entire chart.
You don't have to be an astrologer, however, to recognize some of the psychological patterns typical of a sign. One Capricorn theme, certainly not the only one, I call the Parent pattern. See if this describes anyone you know. As is the case with almost all the patterns, this one begins in childhood. The early environment is such that the child becomes the Little Adult; he or she doesn't really get to be a kid. The early parental influences are such that the child makes a psychological decision: "In order to survive I must be responsible for myself." The Capricorn themes of work and responsibility become translated into a subconscious pattern that will be acted out in adult life. It screens out assistance and intimacy with others
So what are the behaviors and life experiences that are driven by the hidden subconscious decision made as a child? The individual plays the role of the giving, responsibility-taking Parent. The role of the spontaneous Child that receives from others is avoided because of the childhood decision that this is a position of vulnerability. Typically, the Parent person marries the psychological Child to balance out the archetype. The partner then carries the themes of immaturity, irresponsibility and neediness. Of course, this drives the responsibility-oriented Capricorn-type person up the wall.
This pattern is not limited in its expression to only committed relationships. The Parent can be found on the job. They are good in leadership positions or running their own business. They may be very critical and complain that their employees are helpless children, however. In friendship relationships, they must do more for you than you do for them. They may feel very uncomfortable if someone surprises them with a gift for no apparent reason. They often have trouble asking for help, and if they do, they insist on paying.
My job as an astrological counselor is to take a case history, identify the pattern in the horoscope and explain how it is manifesting in the client's experience.
So are we stuck for life because of our reaction to a childhood situation? That depends on whether or not we discover what psychological pattern WITHIN OURSELVES is fueling the experiences of our lives. The people who get under our skin the most are simply players in our own inner drama, attracted like a magnet to play their role. In the case of the Parent pattern, I counsel my clients about how they might recover the repressed Child and learn new behaviors to stop signaling the world that they are here to give and not receive.
One last thing, not all Capricorn-influenced charts will lead to the Parent pattern. It is a mistake to use astrology to paint every person with the same brush.
This tenth sign of the zodiac is the most likely to be a workaholic. It is a pattern that may not be criticized, in fact, may be praised (He's such a hard worker). It can be lethal to the individual, however, as the overwork and stress leads to physical or emotional breakdowns.
Capricorn does not like the emotions. It is a sign of work, duty, responsibility and performance no matter what. Those pesky emotions have a way of upsetting things and interfering with work. Repression of the emotions that may lead to depression is a negative aspect of the sign.
Capricorn is about control. They like to be in control, which is fundamentally based on the need for security for the self and others. The motive to take control of things is the inner feeling that things will be better if they are in charge. This can be overdone, of course, and we then get the control freak
Capricorn is the sign that describes our personal relationship to the physical world. The primary drive in regard to that is to first of all survive. We have to have food, shelter etc. In modern societies basic needs are more complex. We may need a job, a car or a power wardrobe. The physical world operates on immutable laws that cannot be repealed by any individual person, no matter how powerful that person may be. You can't pay a million dollars to skip winter this year.
How one relates to this powerful force over which we have no control will depend on the childhood experiences. If the child is abused, that will likely be projected onto our physical experience itself. The larger reality looms as dangerous and threatening. You will find many fears lurking in Capricorn. As a result, there may be career problems and trouble with powerful authoritarian types.
Nature's laws are translated into the laws of the land. That is why we give Capricorn rulership over judges and courts of law. It is the letter of the law, not the spirit of the law. We have all seen a situation in which the law turns out to be unjust is some exceptional case, but the judge must abide by it regardless.
Capricorn is all about tradition and basic values. They are not here to rock the boat. This sign is about the past. In the soul of most Capricorns is a yearning to return to past times and for things to "be like they used to be." They may be found at archaeological digs, historical societies and the like. Also, Capricorn rules over the bony skeleton of the body. In that connection it is therefore the person who sits in the dental chair brandishing a drill in your direction.
If your Capricorn friends can let go of total control, can learn to ask for and accept help, honor the emotional issues in life and do not work themselves to death you will have people who will do what they say, always be there to help, more than willing to meet you half way and preserve traditions that create stability in your circle and in the world. They also often have a wonderful dry wit if you are sharp enough to get it.
The sun will leave Capricorn and enter Aquarius on January 20. Next month we will examine some of the particular quirks of Aquarians.
