The Holistic Mystic:

Enlightment Is In Your Body

by Lonny Brown, HHc.
There's no use reaching for the stars if you're not comfortable in your skin.

- Nadar

Many spiritual seekers think enlightenment is a metaphysical achievement.. that is, beyond the physical. They assume that meditation, for example, involves transcendence of the material world of form, including the body. Religious asceticism and the renunciation of sex result from this displaced view, as does the concept of "heaven" as reachable only when we drop our bodies.

This historic but dysfunctional schism between consciousness and matter, spirit and flesh, leads to all kinds of problems, including disassociation, alienation and guilt. It gave rise to the centuries-old battle between science and religion, and it perpetually postpones the very realization we seek.

The Truth of Life can never be found out there. First and foremost, it's right here, in your gut, your heart, your breath, your bowels. You are the Living Spirit of the Universe, but you'll never realize it if you can't relax in your own body.

Meditation is often used as a subtle form of escape: people sit still in order to get out. Astral projection feels like "liberation." But, in the practical parlance of the chakra system, the lotus flower crown is connected to the muddy root - the very source of our energy - itself originating in the dark, dirty earth. As the Buddha so poignantly taught, life hurts, but the solution is not avoidance (which is impossible), but simple openness to what is.

The first lessons in meditation literally begin with your seat, and deal with mechanics like balance, alignment, and relaxation. After these come sensory, breath and energy awareness, and perceiving our own mind at work. It is through investigating the very real-world, human condition that accurate insight arises. We finally see the miraculous in just what is, which is, in reality, all there ever is.

Body Enlightenment Meditation

Arriving, on the spot, quiet, my pure intention is enlightening.

My spine lifts vertically, honorably,
from the earth's core to the sky and beyond.

I fill up with fresh air, then settle down around each out-breath.

I become balanced, side-to-side, front-to-back, top-to-bottom.

To the great gravitational pull of the planet I release my limbs,
relaxing all muscles, top-down, outside-in, large-to-small, head-to-toes.
This semi-solid organism settles into poised stillness.

I sense the breath.. floating all around it’s fully automatic natural movement;
settling ever deeper through each exhalation,
and into the motionless, open stillness beyond,

verifying that indeed, life breathes me.

This is extremely relaxing.

The living planet's own energy emanates into me from below,

up the electrified spine, opening all glands and organs,
releasing and circulating their fluids.

Rushing through my heart,

echoing silence,

light and color flood my brain.

Beholding the Inner Light,

I am sentience-in-matter,

none other than the Creator recreating the creation,

right here and now.

-ljb
