Opal
The Cupid Stone

by Raven
Opal displays all colors of "autumn" and known as the "cupid stone" by the Ancient Romans and symbolized hope and purity. It is also the birthstone for October and has been associated with eyes or vision by the Ancients. Opal is closely related to Chalcedony due to the silicon oxide but differs as Opal contains a small amount of water.

Opal Gem has a unique display of color known as "Fire" but "Common Opal" is usually dull gray, yellowish, often waxy in appearance and has little to no gem value.

There are four types of Gem Opal: White Opal has opaque white material with flashes and speck of rainbow colors commonly seen in jewelry. Black Opal has the same flashes of colors with dark gray to black body, rare and costly. Fire Opal is a transparent or translucent stone that displays a red or orange body color and may or may not display fire. Water Opal contains the brilliant flashes of colors suspended in a transparent and colorless stone.

Scientific Properties:

Color: White, colorless, pale yellow, pale red, gray, black, rainbow
Hardness: 5.5 to 6.5 Moh's scale
Crystal System: Amorphous; kidney or grape-shaped
Class: Mineraloids
Chemistry: SiO2 - nH2O; Hydrated Silicon Dioxide
Fluorescence: White: white, bluish, brownish, greenish, Black: none, Fire: greenish to brown
Location: Australia, Czech Republic, Mexico, Western USA and Around the World
Uses: Gemstone and ornamental stone
Associated rocks: Chert - a form of microcrystalline quartz, volcanic rocks

Historical Presence:

Romans - Pliny wrote senator Nonius seeking safety took an Opal as large as a hazel-nut, worth 2,000,000 sesterces - valued @ $80,000 in 1913

Native American and Australian Aboriginal Shamen – used Opal to invoke visions and allow them to travel in dream quests.

12th Century - speaks of an Orphanus, a gem set in the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire with hue of pure white snow sparkled and flashed with the color of radiant, bright ruddy wine

Middle Century -
Albertus Magnus listed the gem as an "Ophtalmios" or "eye stone". When seen mixed with other goods, a Russian would buy nothing as Opal was considered a form of "evil eye". He also writes the gem "conferred the gift of invisibility" - which enables the wearer to steal by day without risk of exposure at night. Stories of invisibility may be based on "hydrophane opal", a variety of Opal which displays milky white when dry but when immersed in water gradually fades from sight. Its refractive index is so close to water's that it cannot be seen in liquid.

16th Century - Giovanni Porta states "it stimulates the heart, preserves from contagious and infected airs, drives away despondency, prevents fainting, heart disease and malignant affections".

Queen Victoria - tried to revive interest in Opal and wore many pieces but backfired with an embarrassing accident on her coronation. She wore a gown fastened with an Opal-set broach, which unfastened during the procession, revealing more of the new Queen that was acceptable - which further provided proof that the gem is unlucky.

19th Century - Alphonso XII of Spain gave his queen an Opal on their wedding day. Soon after the betrothal, three people died: the queen's mother, the king's sister and sister-in-law. The King wore the "fatal gem" and met the same fate, after which the widowed queen attached the stone to a gold necklace and placed it on the statue of the Virgin of Alumbera the Patron Saint of Madrid.

Recent History –
has seen Opal stigmatized and labeled a stone of “ill omen” or “bad luck” which may have fostered in the 19th century – about this time the public began holding jewelers liable for damage goods left for repair.
Opal can fracture easily and without warning, even with great care. Jewelers may have discouraged opal wear than to risk the liability of a damage stone.

Name:

Opal originated with the Latin “Opalus” from the Greek word Opalios derived from Sanskrit “Upala” meaning precious stone.

Myths, Legends & Lore’s:

Greek Mythology:

The Creation of Opal…

The God of Storms became jealous of the Rainbow God and in rage shattered the rainbow. As the pieces feel to earth they were petrified and became Opals.

Arab Tradition – Opals are remnants of lightning strikes to the ground and the flashes in the stone are the captured lightning.

Norse Myth – refers to a sacred stone of opal-like description called yarkastein. A clever smith Volomer (the Scandinavian name for Vulcan) formed in a gruesome way - formed these gems from children’s eyes he had stolen. Opal was often given as a cure for diseases of the eye.

Hermoine, the enchanted princess:

Hermoine was created from a magic lamp, which vanished when she appeared. She was the granddaughter of a Persian shaman and the daughter of a magician. She was married to a wealthy baron and gave birth to a beautiful daughter. At the christening of their child, Hermoine wore a brilliant opal in her hair. The stone would mimic her moods, when happy it will sparkle and shoot red fire when angry. During the christening, holy water splashed on the gem and turned it into a lifeless opal, at the same time princess Hermoine fell to the floor. All that night the storm and lightning raged the castle. The next day the Baron came to wake her and found a pile of ashes on the bed and all that is left is the lifeless Opal.

The Mystic Ring of Gyges: Greek

Gyges was a poor shepherd in the service of the King of Lydia. His romantic life was unsatisfying, so he left home in search of a woman. During his journey he found himself in the midst of a violent earthquake. He came into the brink of a newly created chasm – he entered the chasm’s depths and was amazed to find a hollow brazen horse and small openings in its sides. He peers inside and saw the body of a man and on his finger was a glittering opal ring. Gyges entered and removed the ring with haste and hurried out of the chasm and returned home.

Once a month the king’s shepherds would report to their monarch. The shepherds assembled to prepare their reports and stories. Gyges, anxious to relate his good fortune sat and nervously twisted his newly found ring on his finger. As he turned the setting of the ring toward his hand a strange thing happened, the other shepherds looked in his direction and exclaimed that he had disappeared. Surprised he reversed the position and was welcomed back.

Returning home, Gyges experimented with his new possession and became convinced he now owned a wondrous ring and could carry out his romantic ambitions. At the next gathering of the shepherds he asked to be the one to bring the reports to the King. When he arrived at the palace he ignored the guards giving directions and instead went to the queens room. Before he entered the queen’s chamber he twisted his ring to become invisible and made love to the queen. He then proceeded to murder the king. Impressed by his romantic prowess, the queen married Gyges and made him king, the two reigned happily ever after.
