Welcome to the new year ! Hopefully you all made it through the holidays, and are ready to begin another year of metaphysical journeying. I always have believed in the power of the Universe and living life according to Universal law. Although my definition of the “Universe” or “Spirit” has changed over the years, the basic concept of it remains the same. The more we understand other cultures, belief systems, rituals, traditions and the like, the more we realize that we all have the same basic goals. My goal, as I stated last month, is to let you know what went on during the month in ancient times, and what is still celebrated today. I will let you know when certain astrological events occur, such as full moon, Mercury retrogrades, and unusual alignments. All to help you have more information for your metaphysical quest, whatever it may be.
Maybe some of you found a way last month to absorb an old ancient ritual into a new one, or to celebrate a forgotten festival in your own home. There is always something to celebrate and to use to raise the vibration of the Universe for all. When you see a date where a bonfire was built, maybe you can build one too. Possibly a fire in your hearth, even if it just means turning on the gas jets in your fireplace.
Please remember to feel free to email me (triplemoongoddessgina@hotmail.com),if you have any questions or comments . I have more information on some of the items listed here and will be happy to share with you. Now, on to January and the new year!
January is the first month of the Georgian calendar. Welcome to 2007, and the month named after the Roman god Janus (or Ianuarius). Janus was the “two faced” god who looks forward and backward at the same time. What an appropriate god to start the new year off ! This is the second month of winter, and the traditional flowers of January are the Snowdrop and one of my favorites, the Carnation. Those born this month are Capricorns(goats) or Aquarians(water bearers...please note this is an air sign!), and have the garnet for their birth stone. Those of you who are born during this month, may want to wear a garnet and keep some fresh carnations in your home, doing these things, and others (such as wearing the color of the day or burning the incense of the day) help bring you more in tune with the vibration of the Universe.
This is only a little taste of the events and what they are all about. I try to keep it somewhat short and sweet so that you are not so full of information half way through that you miss any fun times at the end of the month ! So enjoy, research, even email me if you would like, and explore the days that hold a special meaning for each of you!
This month is sacred to these deities: Antu, Felicitas, Inanna, Irene, Janus, Pax, and Venus. I often wonder how the ancients kept track of all the deities and their festivals and feasts, after all they didn’t have The Meta Arts Magazine !
So on we go to the days of the month that will help the modern celebrant keep track. First of all we have New Year’s Day. Today that might make you think of hangovers, resolutions (that are usually somehow attached to the hangovers), football, parades, and food. Here in North America we still use the Georgian calendar, and consider the day a holiday (most countries do except Israel). Those who use the Julian calendar consider it a holy day, and New Year’s will be celebrated on January 14. You will see as we go through the year, that many cultures have “New Year” celebrations on many different days.
The Romans originally celebrated New Year’s Day on March first. This changed in 153 BC. Later in 525 AD, Dionysius Exiguus changed the date to March 25! It seems like a great idea to begin the year with spring, instead of in the middle of winter. The current date most likely came from the Church commemorating the Feast of the Circumcision eight days after Christmas.
It is an old belief to never take anything out of your home on this date, at least not without bringing a new one of the same item in first. If you bring things out (including going out to spend money), those things will continue to flow out of your home all year long.
Strenia was honored on the New Year day by the ancient Romans, and is still celebrated in parts of southern Italy. The Romans would line their windows with greenery like laurel, palm and bay. It is a great tradition to continue. After removing the Christmas pine, put up some laurel branches that were sacred to Strenia.
The first Monday of the year, which is on the first this year, is Handsel Monday in the British Isles where gifts are given to children and servants.
The second of January was considered the birthday of Inanna, she is a Sumerian goddess of both love and war. The goddess Isis was also honored on this date in ancient Egypt. The day was known as the “Advent of Isis from Phonecia”, and the Egyptians honored her coming to their land. The second is also the day of the earth’s perihelion, this is when the earth’s orbit is closest to the sun.
Jan 3- The Deer Dances are performed by Native Americans, most notably the Pueblo , on this date. There are other southwestern tribes that also celebrate with the Deer Dances, nut the Pueblo seem to be most dedicated to this festival. The shamans wear deer head dresses and honor the Deer Mother with ceremonial dances. The Lenaia was also celebrated today in ancient Greece to honor Dionysus, the god of wine and fertility. The full moon occurs today at 8:57 AM eastern time.
Jan 4-Sacrifice to the Seven Stars is performed at midnight in Korea. Water and white rice are offered to the god who lives in Ursa Major constellation for good fortune for the coming year. The ancients thought that the lights in the sky were all gods and goddesses.
Jan 5- Twelfth Night (Wassil Eve). In England it is the end of the Christmas season on this date. Christians believe it marks the coming of the Epiphany. This begins on the eve of January 5, although some believe it should be January 6 (hence the name twelfth Night). The adoration of the Magi is marked by some with the exchange of gifts on this night. It is believed that you should have all your Christmas decorations removed by this time or it will bring bad luck into your home. Some countries use this date to mark the beginning of the Carnival season. In Italy it is Befana. Befana was a good witch who is said to have been too busy sweeping her house when the wise men came to bring her to see the Christ child. She now lives in the chimney of your home and on this night distributes gifts or lumps of garlic (if you were bad!).
Jan 6- Day of the Triple Goddess - Many cultures have various aspects of a triple goddess. I suppose that you can tell by my name that I could write a whole article on this topic. However I will just say that the goddess was honored on this day , in many cultures under many names. She is representative of the process of life and growth.
Jan 7-Epiphany cakes were baked on this date. There was a coin baked into the cake , the luck recipient was the “king” or “queen” of the day. I mentioned Carnival season, Mardi Gras is a carnival, and there are cakes baked during the celebration called “King cakes”. These have a little plastic doll baked inside them, but the origin is the same ! In Norway it is fire saving day, the mistress would celebrate the return of the sun by drinking some ale and throwing the rest of the glass into the hearth fire. The rest of the household then drank from bowls which they would toss over their heads. If the bowl landed right side up, all was well, if right side down the person would die that year !
Jan 8- Old Druid’s New Year. It was also Midwife Day in ancient Greece where the goddess Babo was honored. This day was also dedicated the Freya, the goddess of love and fertility in ancient Rome.
Jan 9- Feast of the Black Nazarene in the Phillippines.
Jan 10- Feast of Dreams, today the Iroquois celebrate their new year with centuries old rituals.
Jan 11- Plough Monday (First Monday after the Epiphany in England and Scotland).A plough is paraded through the streets in front of folks sweeping with brooms to sweep away any bad luck or evil spirits from the village. The ancient Romans celebrated Carmentalia beginning on this date and celebrated for 15 days thereafter. The goddess Carmenta was honored, she and her priestesses cast a child’s fortune at the time of their birth.
Jan 12- Makara-Sankranti, a Hindu solstice ritual that involves sacred baths, songs, and saffron. Married women give each other gifts of kitchen utensils. Scholarships are awarded to students of astrology and philosophy.
Jan 13-Saint Silvester’s Day-In Switzerland bells are rung to scare away evil spirits for the year, this date is based on the Julian calendar.
Jan 14- In southern India a three day festival begins, called Pongal (named after a food eaten during the celebration), this celebrates the rice harvest, and honors the Sun god Surya. The spirits are also thanked who will bring in the rainy season.
Jan 15- Vesta was honored in ancient Rome during a festival called the Feast of the Ass . She presides over hearth and temple, and is assisted by the Vestal Virgins. She does not have the ability to fall in love !
Jan 16-Buddhist monks gather at Mount Bromo to honor Betoro Bromo (a fire god). Food and flowers are cast into the volcano at midnight. This is also the eve of Saint Anthony, another fire festival. Men go around and ask for wood for a huge bonfire to celebrate St. Anthony, this is done in thanks for chasing evil out of Italy. There are bonfires all over Italy at crossroads and courtyards. It is always interesting to see two diverse cultures have the same style ritual on the same day!
Jan 17-An old Celtic ritual is performed today called Wassailing the Apple Trees. Cider is poured on the trees, and incantations are said to protect the trees and drive away any supernatural entities.
Jan 18- Assumption Day- Mary Mother of God was taken into Heaven, Catholics celebrate her life on this day.
Jan 19- Thorrablottar is celebrated in Iceland. It was originally a pagan celebration of Thor, the god of thunder. It is now celebrated as Husband’s Day. Today is also the Feast of the Kitchen God in China. Men are the only ones allowed to participate in this celebration. It is called Little New Year. The Chinese New Year is not until February this year.
Jan 20- Islamic New Year and St. Agnes Eve, which is a night for love divinations. The sun enters the sign of Aquarius on this day.
Jan 21- St. Agnes Day, it is said that unmarried women will see their husband in a dream on this day. The rituals for doing so are very tricky, none are simple to do unfortunately. This day is also sacred to Yngona who is a Danish goddess from pre-Christian times.
Jan 22- Festival of the Muses. The invisible spirits that assist artists are released into the world, they are honored with reading poetry, dancing, singing, and writing. Honor your muse today!
Jan 23-Hathor the ancient cow headed goddess is celebrated in Egypt and worldwide by Pagans on this date. She is the goddess of heaven, beauty and love. Today is also St. Ildefonso’s Day.
Jan 24-Alacitas is celebrated today, this annual fair celebrates Ekeko, a prosperity god sacred to the Aymara Indians in Bolivia. In Hungary a purification ceremony is held today named Blessing of the Candle of the Happy Women. The marriage of Zeus ands Hera was also celebrated on this date.
Jan 25- St Dwynen- the Welsh version of St. Valentine. She made a plea that all lovers should succeed or be cured. Burns Night, the famous poet is honored on this night by eating haggis, now this may not be very metaphysical, but how many days on the calendar are set aside for eating haggis!
Jan 27- Day of Ishtar is celebrated, to honor the goddess of love, spring, fertility and battle.
Jan 29- Birthday of Pax and Irene. Pax and Irene were goddesses of Peace, and Pax literally translates to peace in Latin.
Jan 30- Shetlands- Up-Helly-Aa is celebrated on the last Tuesday of January. It is a fire festival which marks the end of traditional Yuletide, and honors the gods and goddesses of the Vikings. The day ends with a prayer to drive all evil from the village. In ancient Rome, the Feriae Sementiva or Feast of Spring was celebrated. Ceres was honored (the goddess of agriculture) along with Tellus Mater (Earth Mother).
Jan 31- Nepal- Sarasvati is honored, as the goddess of education, food, flowers and incense are brought to her temples by Hindu students. Kuan Yin is also honored on this date in China and there is a flower festival in Hawaii to honor the Narcissus flower. Kuan Yin is the mother of compassion , a Chinese goddess and a Buddhist bodhisattva.
May you all have a wonderful , warm month and celebrate an ancient ritual or two to honor those that came before us. May you be in good health and find peace and happiness all month long!I will see you all in February.
Love and Light to all,
Gina.
