When Thesbis Steps Out of the Chorus
Vocational Astrology for Successful Actors
Part 2 |

"You can throw away the privilege of acting, but that would be such a shame. The tribe has elected you to tell its story. You are the shaman/healer, that's what the storyteller is, and I think it's important for actors to appreciate that. Too often actors think it's all about them, when in reality, it's all about the audience being able to recognize themselves in you."
Ben Kingsley
In the preceding two month's issues of The Meta Arts, we discussed the difficulties of avocational astrology for actors and discussed some chart examples of actors and the 11th house effect connected with the varying aspects of fame. The two charts discussed exemplified how the actors' tenanted 11th houses enabled them to connect to the audience's "collective heart" and thus receive a modicum of fame. The following two examples of actors who rode the media fame well and continue to have viable careers with ever developing depth and scope.
The first is Diane Keaton. She has had a long and distinguished career but it began with a 11th house media boost. As well as the fact that her first stage role was in "Hair," the trendy milestone of her generation, she also was at one time a media phenomena-an 11th house event, a marker of the "heart of the collective."
Chart of Diane Keaton:
01/05/46, 2:49 AM PST, Los Angeles,

Her collective 11th house has Neptune and Jupiter in Libra tenanted within. Neptune is long associated with film and Jupiter with good fortune to the planet that it touches. If you recall Ms. Keaton's biggest fame came through her portrayal of the title character in the Woody Allen's film Annie Hall. She not only became internationally famous for this role but she became a fashion trend setter as well. Her quirky second hand Rose gender bending look was copied by women internationally.
Venus ruled Libra the sign placement of these two planets in the 11th house of fame are well connected with fashion. Who would have thought a so called staid Capricorn would become a fashion trend setter. Well, a Cappy with creative ethereal Neptune and excessive, abundant Jupiter in the fashion loving sign of Libra in the 11th house of the public, can and did. A Cappy with a quirky trend setting collective inspiring Moon in Aquarius in the 3rd house of communication. Also remember that Uranus, Aquarius, 11th house are connected with androgyny as well, which was a striking part of her fashion look replete with men's jackets and hats worn with feminine silk skirts and flowing scarfs.
The second hand Rose look is also connected with her Mars conjunct Saturn in the vintage loving sign of Cancer. Her Uranus planet of fame in the 7th house of partners in the sign of the comedian, Gemini. This connects with the fact that her lover, Woody Allen, was the creator of the film and of role which catapulted her to fame. This is just an aside really, Ms. Keaton's talent and drive played just as important of a role in her initial success as this relationship may or may not have done.
She also has the traditional entertainer placement of the Leo midheaven. Looking at her chart it is no surprise that she made her debut in the stage version of Hair. Sun in Capricorn may not be comfortable with public nudity but Moon in Aquarius will agree to do it for the novelty and freedom, and with a bit of love for the shock value as well.
Whether it is in the sad and chilling "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" or her ability to bring attention to a highly mundane role such as Kay in the "Godfather," Ms. Keaton's uniqueness and talent shine. But once again it is her 11th house natal placements that brought her to the public's attention, that welcomed her a representative emblem of the times into to its collective heart. >>
There is an old, rather pejorative statement in the business that,
"An actress is more than a woman, and an actor is less than a man." In its archaic gender stereotypical way, it makes sense when you realize that the 11th house, Uranus, Aquarius, has an androgynous quality. In metaphysics of all cultures one of the goals is to balance the male/female, yin/yang, animus/anima in ones being in order to reach a higher form of development. Well, the actor must have the 11th house, androgynous quality to move both men and women in the audience in order to connect with the collective heart.
Our example of the continued success of an actor with the 11th house effect also has this androgynous quality by natal placement as well as the 11th house connection. Al Pacino does have the often seen actor's ascendant of the sign Leo, but with his Taurus Sun and especially his Taurus Sun conjunct practical Saturn, he does not have a typical actor's natal chart. These two placements make it difficult for someone to accept the often long periods of low income that acting often demands.
Chart of Al Pucino:
04/25/40, 11:02 AM EST, NY

If he did not reach early success with the "Godfather," there is a question of whether his Taurus placements would have given him the stubbornness to continue to plug along, or if they would have pushed him into something far more practical to make a living. I tend to think he would have plugged onward since his idealistic Sagittarius moon is located in the 5th house of Leo the performer.
Mr. Pucino's 11th house is tenanted by Mars and Venus in the sign of Gemini. The role of Michael in the "Godfather," which brought him his fame, is a character who is considered in the beginning of the film to be frivolous, even slightly effeminate in his foolish idealism. His cynical macho Mafia brethren feel he is correct to attend college and stay out of the "business." But enlisting in the army and potentially "dying for strangers" is the ultimate of his foolishness that they cannot accept. But he is not foolish. He fools them all by becoming the consummate of dons. The female/male, passive/aggressive duality of this role is well expressed to the public with his natal placements of assertive Mars and receptive Venus in the 11th house of the public. Also the mutable sign Gemini is known for its quick silver ability to change, to shock, as the trickster shocks with the unexpected.
The Trickster can be dark as well as comedic. We discussed the comedic qualities in the chart of Andy Kaufman. In Mr. Pacino's chart we see the dark side even more clearly. The 11th house Mars and Venus are in opposition to his Moon in Sagittarius giving him a moody, unpredictable quality. Plus his 11th Venus is part of a T Square involving moon and Neptune. This conflict of needs and desires between moon and Venus are clouded by Neptune adding to his brooding unpredictable personae. Many people forget the gentle some may say female/Venus side of Michael
Corleone that continues throughout his characterization in the saga. His love of family and children is a major motivation for his character. The actor who plays him needs the duality of the courage of Mars and sensitivity of Venus. He is devoted to family yet kills his enemies while becoming godfather to his nephew and follows that by killing the child's father, his brother in-law. Have a look at Pucino's Pluto in autocratic Leo in the 12th house of hidden enemies and subconscious motivations-also it is in the critical degree of 00. None of the audience doubted for a moment his sincerity in his love for his family nor in his ability to be a brutal killer simultaneously.
Michael is in despair that his wife miscarried, yet he can kill his own brother. The ability to make the public <11th house> believe in this character's unpredictable duality <Gemini> to express extreme aggression <Mars> and extreme sensitivity <Venus> is there in Pucino's chart. If you think his natal chart has little to do with his ability to play this complex character-then just try to think of who you would cast in this role? What other actor could have been so convincing. Francis Ford Coppola has an instinct for seeing the subtext of actors in casting his films The powers that be kept trying to fire Al Pucino from the Godfather, feeling that he was too weak, too unknown to carry the part. Luckily, Coppola had filmed the scene where Michael kills the police detective and drug dealer in the restaurant. After viewing this pivotal scene, Pucino's place in the roll was secure.
Mr. Pucino also has cinema loving Neptune in the 3rd house of communication trined by Uranus, the fame planet, in the 10th house of career. As noted earlier, the Pluto planet of intrigue and violence in the critical 00 degrees <subtle effect by degrees of a powerful but subtle planet> in the actor's sign of Leo in the 12th house of the subconscious in combination with his 11th house effect creates his ability to portray a darkly complex character such as Michael. Michael has become an American icon much to the dismay of the book's author, Mario Puzzo, and the film's director. When you think of it, Michael is in reality a mass AND a serial murderer-but not for pleasure, of course, only for business. Yet Pucino portrayed him, thanks to his natal chart and honed acting ability, in a way that the vast majority of the audience found both identifiable and sympathetic. No small feat that.
The placement of Jupiter the planet of luck and Uranus the planet of sudden occurrences in his 10th house of career played a part in bringing him this pivotal role as well. Just as an aside to this distinguished career, if you have not seen him in the film "The Devil's Advocate" do rent it. His Trickster Gemini 11th house duality, his playful Sag moon, and his frightening critical degree Pluto in Leo in the 12th have a field day!
These four actor/performers were responsible for their own success in part by their determination and talent-BUT, the element of that secret ingredient that happens in the careers of successful actors, is here in their natal charts' 11th house connection.
I will go out on a limb and state unequivocally that even non actors have their 15 minutes of fame if they have a tenanted 11th house. It is usually very modest in comparison to the above examples. But it is often instant public attention, fleeting, and it can, unfortunately, be negative unwarranted "fame" such as scandal as well. It all depends on the planets, signs, and natal aspects that are tenanted in the 11th natal house and the planets that come to strongly aspect them by transit.
In the next and final part of these series on vocational astrology for the actor, we will examine mega "collective heart" actors. Three unique charts and individuals whose promethian energies caught the public's attention in such a way as to radically change the entire face of the profession. >>
