Venus-Uranus Aspects:
A Strange Beauty

by Donna Cunningham, MSW
Venus-Uranus folks dazzle and delight us with their unusual styles of living and loving. They begin by shocking us, then wind up setting trends that we rush to emulate. In almost all the entertainment fields, they dominate. For instance, among musicians with Venus in aspect to Uranus, we find Celine Dione, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Prince, Queen Latifah, and the enduring legend, Elvis Presley. Leading men with these aspects include Robert Redford, Sean Connery, and Denzel Washington, while leading ladies include Angelina Jolie, Susan Sarandon, Sharon Stone, and Liz Taylor. Figure skating stars with these aspects include Scott Hamilton, Kristie Yamaguchi, and Oksana Baiul.

Venus involves such important issues as whom or what is loved, how freely we love, how we express affection, how we attract love, our sense of beauty and style, our capacity to compromise and cooperate, and how we seek harmony. Venusian or Libran types tend to go to any length to please and to gain approval and love. They may be artistic or merely decorative, they charm, they mediate, they seek consensus and are seldom comfortable rocking the boat.

While Librans have a hard time rocking the boat, Aquarians delight in it—the rockier, the more of a ball they have. Uranus and its sign Aquarius can be personable but far from personal and don’t like to blend, merge, or commit. Both Venus and Uranus end with US, so both have to do with connections between people, but of very different sorts. Uranus’ functions include: how we break from the past, how we depart from the norm, how we claim our independence, how we shake up the status quo, how we declare our uniqueness, how we break new ground, and how we continually reinvent ourselves.

Typical Uranian or Aquarian types are often rebellious, even iconoclastic, in their modernistic, visionary perspectives on life. Depending on which sensibility these freethinking gadflies are tweaking today, you may find them modern, trendy, inventive, and charismatic, or you may find them shocking, outlandish, socially beyond the pale, and unsettling. You’ll seldom find them boring. No doubt you’ve already begun to suspect some difficulties with a Venus-Uranus aspect—like the fact that a Venusian would never pronounce it Your-Anus, while the hide-bound Uranian delights in doing so. It tends to universal love, instant connections, visionary harmony, intermittent cooperation, unconventional relationships, and on-again, off-again commitments. Other expressions include innovative style, eccentric charm, unusual beauty, charismatic appeal, shocking indulgence, futuristic arts, and trend-setting fashions.

Common Themes of Venus-Uranus People

Over the years, my observations of people with this aspect confirm that the keyword combinations above generally fit people with these aspects in the birth chart well. You’d find some similar patterns in people with Venus in Aquarius or Uranus in the 7th house. We’ll explore the differences between squares, conjunctions, and other angles later, but let’s begin by looking at some dynamics they have in common.

STAR QUALITY: Glitterati is a good term for Venus-Uranus folks, as they so often have a dazzling style all their own. Unconventional, mildly to moderately shocking, they attract notice and stir up controversy, but may wind up being trend setters, once the buzz they’ve created dies down. They shake up the status quo but get away with it, because they do so with a unique brand of charm other Uranians may lack. As their hormones calm down, some of them go out of style, having enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame. Others with this aspect have the genius to keep reinventing themselves and remain on top—Sean Connery, Robin Williams, and Robert Redford are still big names because their talents keep evolving in ways that capture the public imagination. Then there are the few—Elvis Presley, Liz Taylor, and Princess Diana—who are such unforgettable, one-of-a-kind luminaries that they’ll remain legendary long after their time. Like Elvis and Sean Connery, some are “bad boys,” adored because they’re so relentlessly naughty that they act out our own wishes to defy authority. It’s the US in it, the way these delightful reprobates wink and invite us to join them in misbehaving.

“THEY NEVER KNEW A STRANGER:” One effect of this planetary combination is the capacity for instant kinship with people of backgrounds different than their own. Typically, their friendships include a fascinating melange of races, cultures, interests, and sexual persuasions. They collect bright, sophisticated, exotic, even quirky folks who are on the leading edge of things but too busy to get together often. Such friends bring excitement and sudden leaps in consciousness by exposing the native to avant-garde ideas.

RUNAWAY BRIDES AND OTHER DISTANCERS: Many Venus-Uranus folks have a seemingly never-ending series of short-lived but exciting partnerships. In the introduction to this section of the book, we looked at the chart of Julia Roberts, who had the title role in the movie, Runaway Bride, and who has Venus conjunct Uranus and Pluto. The movie could have been written about her!

Many with Uranus in aspect to Venus have difficulty committing and so spend years chasing the fireworks of early courtship, leaving or otherwise creating breakups when relating to someone becomes more routine. The pattern of broken relationships can continue until they take responsibility for generating their own excitement—or meet a partner so Uranian that the fascination never stops! Many with this aspect fool themselves that they’re yearning for commitment, yet repeatedly fall in love with unavailable people. This behavior is “crazy like a fox,” since involvement with distancers lets them retain their independence and continue to pursue their own development.

“UNCONVENTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:” One typical interpretation that astrologers give of people with Venus-Uranus contacts is that they’re inclined to “unconventional relationships.” The androgynous beauty (musicians Michael Jackson and Prince) that can accompany this aspect fuels speculation. David Kopay, the first athlete to come out publicly as gay, has Venus and Uranus conjunct in Gemini on his Midheaven. Ellen Degeneres, who has the opposition, lost her highly successful show after deciding that she could no longer hide her true self from world. After several years of career limbo—and a greater degree of public acceptance that her actions played no small part in creating—she once again has a successful show and is beloved by her audience.

Donna Cunningham,
Astrologer
& Healer

Donna Cunningham is an internationally respected astrologer and the author of 19 books on metaphysical topics.
She has been an astrologer for almost 40 years.

Her newest career direction is to lead writing seminars for those who wish to write about astrology, metaphysics or self-help subjects. See her summer offerings at www.moonmaven
publications.
com/writingseminars.html.

Donna Cunningham has a dual background in astrology and psychotherapy, with a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and over 30 years experience as a professional astrologer. She considers doing the astrology charts of children to be a sacred trust. It is a way of knowing who these Indigo children are on their own terms rather than as their families, teachers, and society expect them to be.

In these sessions, she focuses on typical childhood concerns such as family and peer relationships, the best educational approaches, and the child's special gifts and abilities. She can be reached for consultations at (503)291-7891, by email, or at her web page. Ask about her special rate for children's charts.

Donna is also co-editor of Vibration and a frequent contributor. She has written fourteen books on astrology and other metaphysical topics, including her Flower Remedies Handbook. Astrologers who want to know the special considerations involved in doing children's charts can read the chapter on this topic in Donna's text, The Consulting Astrologer's Guidebook.

Listed in several Who’s Who volumes, she has given seminars on astrology around the world and won the prestigious Regulus Award at the 1998 UAC.
