Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
It’s Gotta Go
|

I used to love watching shows on nature. I could name most of the animals that came onto the television screen. I could tell you various information about them. I could even tell you who was next for dinner. In the world of nature, there is a cycle. One creature eats a plant. That creature gets eaten by a larger one. That one is soon a snack for a predator and the cycle continues. Nature is an excellent teacher if we will only heed her lessons.

Our card this month is the “dreaded” Death card from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see one of those scenes from nature, circled by various creatures. The blood-colored circle reminds us that life is indeed cyclical in nature. Sometimes it is difficult to watch such moments. The frightened prey succumbs to its fate as the predator tightens his death grip. However, if any of you have ever watched the nature shows to which I have referred, you might remember that the death of this one animal meant that the babies of the predator would live. We often forget that sometimes one thing has to die in order for another to live. Even we, whether carnivores or vegetarians, kill something in order to live. We take in the life of another organism in order to survive.
Now, let us venture into the spiritual realm, as is our custom to do. Even here, there are things that must die in order that other things may live. Old belief systems that no longer serve us are a prime example. Remember that it is natural for things to change. What we believe should be constantly shifting to some degree. As we get older and as we learn more about life, what we understand about it will plant new seeds of understanding in our hearts and souls. Very often, we are faced with a decision, whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Sometimes these choices come to us in strange situations that may seem to have nothing to do with our spiritual journey. Think again. Our entire existence has something to do with our spiritual journey. You can no more separate your spirit from your being than you can your ideas or your feelings. The only thing about us that is not truly us is our physical bodies. That might be a hard concept to grasp, but we can exist without the body, we cannot exist without our spirit.
When trials come to us, it is natural to react as physical beings. All we want is for the discomfort to stop. As spiritual beings, we need to train ourselves to look beyond the earthly. We need to decipher the happenings to see if they are trying to tell us something about our spiritual life. When we believe something, we take it to our hearts and embrace it. It is not easy to release something that we have held so close. And, yet, sometimes that is exactly what we must do in order to make room for beliefs that better serve us. There is nothing fickle about altering your belief system. Consider science. We used to believe that bleeding someone would fix a world of ills. As medical science grew in understanding, the blood letting was set aside in favor of more useful procedures. Why should the spiritual realm be any different? What you believe is responsible for many things in your life. When we find something that no longer fits, it is not only acceptable, but also necessary for us to set that aside in order to make room for “bigger and better” things.
In our card, a youngling sits up in the corner, waiting to be fed. If its parent does not provide it with food, it will die. So often we are so afraid to explore new ideas, new spirituality, that we do not feed the young spiritual part of ourselves that wants to live. We cannot betray our childhood religion or do not want to seem wrong in front of others. Regardless of the reason, there is nothing wrong with exploring new ideas. In fact, if we do not constantly test our beliefs against new ones, how do we know if they are true? Something that is useful to us will stand against any scrutiny. The fear only comes when we have some doubt in our minds and hearts that it cannot withstand the examination. When something is no longer useful or edifying for us, then it’s gotta go.
I have heard all the arguments. I know the buzzwords that keep people from exploring anything outside the narrow realm of a set structure. However, for example, religion is not necessarily the same thing as spirituality. It is possible to hold a religion along side of a spirituality that may not agree on everything. This requires an open mind and a willing heart. Some people need to maintain their religious upbringing. It is a part of who they believe themselves to be. But why can they not also accept the spiritual side of their life? Many times this is because they fear that the two cannot stand side-by-side. If your religious beliefs stand in the way of your spiritual growth, then perhaps that is something that needs to be examined. Anything that holds us down, keeps us prisoner, is not good for us. Only when you are allowed to see all that there is to be had can you make an informed decision.
As in the natural world, when the spirit feels itself dying, it will sometimes try to kill off those things that threaten its existence. It will need to find a way to guide us to those things that will help us and nurture us. Sometimes something has to die in order for something else to live. Many of the emotional struggles that we have are because we will not venture outside of our safety zone. Fear is a prison. Knowledge is power. The more that you know, the less that you have to fear, and the more freedom you will find. The spirit is not something that can live imprisoned. It must be free in order to grow and in order to breathe life into us.
Our Death card reminds us that sometimes we have to allow something to die. It is the nature of things. But death is not an end, it is a beginning. It is an opened door through which we may walk and live anew. And as we wander on this earth and learn the lessons contained herein, we have only to remember one thing. If it no longer works, it’s gotta go.

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
Her two novels, "Card Shark" & "The Fallen" are available at all online bookstores or by visiting:
