Contradiction as Liberation
by Lonny Brown, HHc. |
|
|
In the Zen tradition, aspirants are assigned unsolvable riddles and impossible concepts, called koans, in order to break the constraints of conceptual rationalism. A typical example: what was your face before your parents were born? No amount of logic can solve such puzzles, yet the koan is often the object of months - sometimes years - of meditation. Hopefully, the elusive "ah-ha" moment called satori eventually occurs, freeing one forever from the tyranny of two-dimensional thinking.
One seeming contradiction emerging from the convergence of West and East is that both a healthy ego and ego transcendence are equally important, and not mutually exclusive. It sounds like an oxymoron: get a grip and let go. Ironically, the most enlightened, self-transcended people are often scandalously colorful, manifesting the universal in the unique.
A good sign of spiritual maturity is the ability to embrace opposites; to face paradox with equanimity, absurdity with humor. An abundance of opportunity to do so confronts the 21st century world citizen. On TV, horrific war coverage is punctuated with seductive commercials for all manner of trivial merchandise. Outside, the homeless sleep at the foot of corporate skyscrapers. How can we make sense of such irreconcilable scenes and find peace of mind in these extreme times? While it seems we have less opportunity for contemplative pursuits, spiritual equanimity is needed in the world more than ever.
Dissolved Dichotomies
The mystical secret is that opposites don't exist. Even such polar dichotomies as good and evil, male and female, hot and cold are relative forms of the same creation. It all depends on how you look at it. Einstein's great insight, E=MC2 dispensed overnight the previously universally presumed "difference" between energy and matter. The Tibetan image for this union of opposites is the adamantine jewel within the delicate lotus. The Taoist tradition uses the swirling black & white Yin-Yang symbol to illustrate this mutually co-defining, inter-dependence.
As dualism is a mental predisposition, its resolution is also psychological. We can experience such transcendent merging through sex, sports, dreams, music and arts, or meditation. To literally see through dualistic thinking, try meditating with your eyes half-open, blurring the arbitrary distinction between outside and within. Repeat with each breath the mantra, life/death, life/death, life/death.. many times for several minutes a day. Eventually, the understanding emerges that awareness is not only independent of conditions, but it creates them. In a kind of spiritual nonsense, you are immortal if you can give up you.
Other challenging ways to learn to love contradiction include relaxed defensive driving, marketplace fasting, enlightened sex, and spiritual capitalism.
