What is Enlightenment and How Can I Get It?
Part 2 of 3

(Part 1 said only two parts, but it has become three!)
Martin Lass, S.O.L.A.R.® First Facilitator, © 2007
In last month’s column, we explored the idea of enlightenmentwhat people have called it, how they have defined it, what it might entail, and so forth. Then we began to set the stage for a greater understanding of what enlightenment is and how we might get it. The first part of this now-three-part column can be found in the archives.
In summary, though, enlightenment is about higher consciousness. Higher than what? Higher than our normal, everyday consciousness. As we saw at the end of last month’s column, due to the nature of perception and the nature of the world around us (matter and anti-matter), we initially only see half ourselves, our lives, and the world around us. From this perspective, our consciousness can be said to be “Wounded.” Given this, if enlightenment is about higher consciousnessabout rediscovering the other hidden halves of our livesthen enlightenment is also about Healing in the broadest sense.
We ended last month’s column with the following:
[The] process of perception is the Wounding, the Creation, the Fall, the descent in Duality. It’s all about consciousness, because everything is consciousness, as we’ll explore further later.
Therefore, the Healing, Evolution, and the Ascension, are completely about expanding perception to include the lost/hidden/denied/rejected/unloved sides of ourselves, our lives, and the world around us. It is about rejoining our visible Matter (personas) with our invisible anti-Matter (anti-personas).
Put simply, it is about seeing all sides of ourselves, our lives, and the world around us, i.e. the greater Truth of things, beyond apparent dualities/opposites.
From this perspective, we can see that Healing, Evolution, Ascension, and enlightenment are all essentially the same thing.
Let’s continue to see how this is so and to set the stage from which we can talk about how to get enlightened…
Light and Light
Everything is Light
There is one thing that science and spirituality/religions agree upon, although, for the most part, they are not yet aware that they agree! They agree that everything is Light. Granted, many religions also talk about Darkness as the antithesis to Light, whatever form this might take (generally, it is along the lines of evil, ignorance, and illusion, among other things). But when talking about Darkness, this is defined by the apparent absence of Light.
However, science can come to the rescue to show how Light and Darkness are intimately related and are, actually and ultimately, both Light, but simply at different levels of unity and/or duality (diffusion, fragmentation, Woundedness).
Let’s start from the scientific point of view. At the beginning of the universeat the singularity that “preceded” the Big Bangthere was only energy. Unmanifest, pluri-potential (having infinite possibility), super-positional (everything existing in a single “point” of no-time and no-space), energy.
Science also calls this “Light.” Light = energy. Energy = Light.
Although it is not a scientific convention, the reason for putting the capital “L” is to distinguish it from mere visible light, which is but a fraction of the total spectrum of electro-magnetic (EM) energy that makes up our universe. Light with a capital “L” means all EM energy in the universe. And more, because it also includes the other three of the four fundamental forces in the universe, i.e. the weak nuclear force, the strong nuclear force, and gravity. Each of these forces is essentially the same Light, but manifesting at different levels of the Cosmic Hologram (different frequencies and wavelengths).
So, in short, at the beginning of the universe, everything was unmanifested Light/energy. There was no matter yet.
Then, at the so-called Big Bang, this unmanifest Light/energy became manifest. At this point, matter (the scientific word is mass) came into existence, first at quantum levels, later at larger microscopic levels, and still later at the macro level at which we perceive the world.
How did and does Light (energy) become matter (mass)? To illustrate this, let’s take one of the most basic energy “particles”: the photon. A photon is pure energy. A photon appears to be a “particle” when we measure it, but, in Truth, it is an infinite field occupying relative timelessness and spacelessness. (For those interested, look up the “wave/particle duality” in quantum physics.) However, when it “splits” (science calls this particle decay), it can form any number of secondary particlesparticles of matter, each of which have mass and charge and occupy specific “points” in time and space.
The most basic “split” is an electron (negative charge), which is matter, and a positron, which is anti-matter. When this happens, we normally “see” the electron, but we do not normally see the positron (unless we devise very clever experiments in physics labs to detect it).
So, every time Light “splits” into matter, half of the Light becomes hiddenhalf of us, our lives, and the world around us, as we will increasingly see!
So, now we have matter (and hidden anti-matter). Is this still Light? Science says yes! Matter is a kind of “frozen” Light, i.e. Light “slowed down” to lower frequencies and longer wavelengths, split into complementary opposite particles, and now endowed with charge (read: judgment!), which gives it mass, density, heaviness, and makes it able to be perceived by us.
In fact, Einstein’s famous equation, e=mc2, says exactly this, i.e. energy (e) can be converted to mass (m) and mass can be converted to energy, and it’s all to do with the amount of potential energy “stored” in the “particles” (which is what the “c” is about, although this relates to the speed of light, at which speed, all time and space dissolve… another discussion).
Simply put, everything is Light! Energy and mass are both Light. Matter is polarized Light (“split”, particle decayed); Energy is unpolarized Light. Matter is low frequency, dense, “frozen” Light; energy is high frequency, ethereal, “liquid” Light.
Light Equals Consciousness
So, what does this have to do with consciousness, Wounding and Healing, and enlightenment? Everything, actually! Why? Because everything is consciousness. Light is consciousness; consciousness is Light.
The world we see around us (matter, mass) is polarized Lightpolarized consciousness. It’s what spiritual and religious traditions have called Duality, Evil, Ignorance, and Illusion. It is the diffused, fragmented, Wounded Light of the One Light (which, in turn, call it what you like, is God, Source, Universe, Cosmic Hologram, etc).
Let’s diffuse a potential sticking point here before we go too much further: I do not subscribe to spiritual-religious connotations that describe, even define, the world around us as inherently evil. This is a gross misinterpretation of the original meaning of the objective concept of Evil. The world around us Serves a higher Purpose and is part of the Divine Plan, as we shall see. The discussion about Evil and interpretations thereof go beyond the scope of this month’s column, but we may come back to it in future columns.
Material Light, Spiritual Light
So, the world around usthe material world we perceive through the sensesis a world of polarized Light/consciousnessone might say “material Light.” Conversely, the spiritual worldthe world we can with practice perceive through our higher “senses”is unpolarized Light/consciousness… one might say “spiritual Light.”
Unpolarized Light/consciousness = Spirit.
Polarized Light/consciousness = Matter.
It’s all Light.
Science’s Light = spirituality/religion’s Light.
More generally, and this corresponds to common usage in New Age and spiritual/religious circles, Light means unpolarized Light/consciousness, i.e. Spirit, whereas Darkness means polarized Light/consciousness, i.e. Matter (using a capital “M” now to indicate that it is now also a metaphysical concept), which is sometimes also called Duality, Materiality, Illusion, Ignorance, and Evil.
However, I will continue to use “Light” and or “consciousness” to mean all of it, using qualifiers to distinguish between the various levels of Light/consciousness, e.g. “polarized” and “unpolarized,” “material” and “spiritual,” “low-frequency” and “high-frequency,” “dense” and “ethereal,” “Wounded” and “Healed,” and “fragmented” and “unified.”
Light, Oneness, and Manyness
What you may have noticed in our description of Light/consciousness and its two formsunpolarized and polarized, as Spirit and Matter, respectivelyis that these two forms correspond to the Oneness and the Manyness, which we talked about in part 1 of our discussions (see last month’s column, in the archives).
The Fall from Oneness into Manyness was the “descent” of Light/consciousness from unpolarized Unity into polarized Duality (again, science calls it particle decay). And the “ascent” from Manyness back into Oneness is the return (Healing) of Light/consciousness from polarized Duality/Woundedness to unpolarized Unity.
As you can see, there are many correspondences now that we can put into a brief table, including a few more that I have thrown in there for you to ponder!
Oneness - Manyness
Spirit - Matter
Formless - Forms
Unity - Duality
Light (generally) - Darkness
Unpolarized Light - Polarized Light
Energy - Mass (matter and anti-matter)
Infinite - Finite-
Stillness - Movement
Chargeless - Charged
Timeless, spaceless - Time and space
Unconditional - Conditional
Love (unconditional)- Emotions (meaning conditional love)
Higher consciousness - Lower consciousness
Unified consciousness - Fragmented consciousness
Healed - Wounded
Wisdom - Ignorance
Truth - Illusion
There are, of course, many other correspondences, but we now have enough to begin to understand who we are, where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going, particularly in terms of our Wish for enlightenment.
Wounding
Descending Light
Everybody on the planet, including you and I, is Light/consciousness. We have descended with the Creation from Oneness into the Manyness of the material world. In the process, our unified consciousness has become fragmented, Wounded, polarized, charged consciousness. We are quite literally a cloud of charged particles of Light.
We are not just talking metaphorically either; we are talking actually, in the quantum physics and astronomy sense. Remember that matter is nothing more or less than “frozen” LightLight that has “descended” from the Big Bang singularity, which is science’s way of describing the omnipresent, omnipotent, pluri-potential, timeless, spaceless, chargeless, massless, One from which the universe was created.
As described in part 1, we each descended through the holograms of Creation, from beyond galaxies through our galaxy, through our solar system, through our planet, through our physical vehicle, and into our personality, which is comprised of innumerable “personas,” each of which is a hologram of the Cosmic Hologram.
The Fragmentation of Consciousness
This descent of Light was simultaneously the fragmentation or Wounding of consciousness, from pure and unified Being into a multitude of “personas.” We discussed personas in detail in a previous column (again, see the archives). More on this in a moment.
The Creation of Time and Space
Our descent as Light/consciousness was also the creation of time and space. Why? Because when any unified “particle” such as a photon, which “lives” in relative timelessness and spacelessness, “splits” (particle decay), it becomes matter and anti-matter, as previously described. And matter moves forward in time, whereas anti-matter moves backward in time (which is part of the reason we do not see it).
Don’t worry too much about understanding the physics of this. The most important point is that the fragmentation of Light/consciousness creates time and space. And charge (judgment) and mass (density of consciousness).
The Act of Perception
Not only this, but the descent of Light/consciousness is all about perception. As we explored in the part 1, each time we experience an “event” or “circumstance,” the act of perception creates a new persona and anti-personaa “particle” of matter (persona) and a “particle” of anti-matter” (anti-persona). The persona remains visible and is our reaction of sensation, emotion, and/or thought to the event or circumstance. The anti-persona becomes hidden and is comprised of all the other sides of the picture of this event or circumstance. Keep this last point in mind, as it is the crux of the matter when it comes to enlightenment, Healing, and wholeness.
Human Natures
Let’s backtrack a little here. Unpolarized Light/consciousness “splits” because it encounters “events” or “circumstances.” Science calls these events or circumstances EM (electro-magnetic) fields. When Light hits an EM field, its tendency is to split, to “decay”, to diffuse, to fragment. It’s just like a prism. White Light is “split” into the many colors of the rainbow.
(Note: Science has not yet figured out how the Big Bang could have caused the original singularity to “split” when there were no EM fieldsno perceptionin existence yet. This is a flaw in the theory. However, this goes beyond the scope of this column. Suffice to say, the answer is that the Creation was not a single linear event, but was/is/will be an eternal process, i.e. the Cosmic Hologram, cycles within cycles within cycles.)
Well, each of us is the result of this splitting of Light in the prism of EM fields (of perception).
The resulting “colors” of our consciousness are what S.O.L.A.R.® calls Natures and personas. We discussed Natures and personas in separate columns, which can be found in the archives. Now we will elaborate this further.
We each have two basic Natures: Earthly (or Material) Nature and Spiritual Nature.
Earthly Nature corresponds to Manyness, Duality, Matter, Woundedness, fragmentation of consciousness, polarized Light/consciousness… in fact, all the things in the right-hand column of the previous table!
Spiritual Nature corresponds to Oneness, Unity, Spirit, Wholeness, unity of consciousness, unpolarized Light/consciousness… all the things in the left-hand column of the previous table.
Spiritual Nature corresponds to Light before the prism, before perception, whereas Earthly Nature corresponds to Light after the prism, after perception.
Through the prism of perception (EM fields of consciousness), Earthly Nature further “splits” into our three basic Natures (sub-Natures, really): Physical Nature, Emotional Nature, and Mental Nature, which in turn correspond to sensation, feeling, and knowing. In Earthly Nature, these three sub-Natures are relatively separate, mostly at odds with each other, disconnected, and have their own needs, wants, agendas, and motivations.
On the other hand, Spiritual Nature consists of these same three sub-Natures, but brought together consciously and intentionally into greater alignment and unity. We will discuss how to bring together these three sub-Natures in a moment, because this is part of the enlightenment process!
Personas
These three sub-Natures are then further “split” by the prism of perception into innumerable “personas.” (By the way, Christianity calls this “the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which is nothing more or less than the particle decay of Light/consciousness coming into the Creation of the solar system, but this is another discussion!)
Recapping what we have previously discussed, personas are the “pieces” of me, of you, of each and every one of us. Each persona (together with other personas of “like mind”) alternatively takes the reigns of our waking consciousness and, while in the driver’s seat, asserts that it is the “one and only” for that time, ignoring and/or unaware of most or even all of the other personas that make up the totality of our psyches.
Put simply, in one minute, “I” may be happy; in the next minute, “I” may be sad. An hour from now, “I” may be tired; tomorrow, “I” may have a lot more energy. Today, “I” make a resolve to start doing my yearly taxes tomorrow; tomorrow comes, and “I” decide to put it off another day. Today, “I” like you, because you gave me the attention I needed; tomorrow, “I” may not like you so much, because you seem distant and cold. And so on and so forth.
I say “I” to each one, as though it were the same person, because my upbringing, social conditioning, education, and the consensus reality tells me that I am one person. Not only this, but I only have one body and one name, so this reinforces the feeling of being one person.
All these personas are the pieces of me, my life, and the world around me. (Why are they also “the world around me”? Because the world around me is a perfect reflection of everything that I am, as we will see a little later.) I am not as aligned and unified as I would like to think. But I do not notice this, for all the reasons given above. I am Wounded (in consciousness), without even knowing it for the most part. That is, until my life mirrors my wounds, issues, charges, and judgments back at me, which is the whole pointthe higher Purposeof us living in the Material world.
Part of the reason we do not see that we are innumerable personas, each taking the driver’s seat of our waking consciousness one at a time, is because, every time we have a perception, we create new personas and anti-personas. The personas (matter) stay visible, and we call them “I,” one at a time in linear sequence, and the anti-personas (anti-matter) becomes hidden, and we call them “not I” and project them into the outside world.
As a result, I might say “I am nice, but you are mean. I am gentle, but you are harsh. I am fair, but you are unfair. I am right and you are wrong. I see things clearly, but you are confused. I am better than you in such and such ways.” Or, conversely, I might say, “I am hopeless, but you have your life together. I am depressed, but you are happy. I am not as good as you in such and such ways,” and so forth.
What I deny, condemn, judge, reject, disown (hidden anti-personas), I project. Onto the mirror of life. All of life is a mirrora mirror of everything that I am… the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the owned, the disowned, the accepted, the rejected, and so on. The physics of this great Truth go beyond the scope of this column. Suffice to say, there are physics to prove it!
Myths and Religions
As an aside, everything that we have discussed so far concerning the descent and possible re-ascent of our Light/consciousness is the subject of most mythologies and religious paradigms throughout history. Mythology is actually astronomy, physics, metaphysics, and esoteric psychology all rolled into one and presented in allegorical forms! S.O.L.A.R.® explores this assertion in detail in some of its other writings, and we may touch on this subject in future columns.
In the meantime, now we are ready to talk about getting enlightened… next month! Sorry for the wait, but it gives time to digest what we have explored so far. I suggest, if you wish, that you go back and re-read this column, the previous one (part 1), and the previous columns about Presence, personas, and Natures. These are available in the archives.
Next month, we will present the final part of this now-three-part series, including the following topics:
