Growing Tension with Iran

As the sands slowly drain from the hourglass of the Bush presidency, a beleaguered nation wonders how much more mismanagement and malfeasance it can withstand from this hapless administration. With little more than eighteen months remaining, it seems the Congressional leadership has taken impeachment off the table, perhaps in the hope that not that much more damage can be done by the criminally negligent, belligerent, and obsessed gang that runs riot in the West Wing these days. But to those of us out here in the trenches, eighteen months seems a very long time to let the lunatics continue to run the asylum.
According to astrology, George Bush has entered a newly energized period as of May 2007, with his progressed Mars conjunct natal Jupiter (18Libra08), which will carry him through November 2008. This aspect suggests a willingness to expand his activities and to be more rash and risk-taking than he has been recently. Through June 2007, and to some extent through December 2007, the restraining and ponderous hand of Saturn is, however, holding him back to some degree in the form of obstruction and opposition from many sources. It is likely his poll numbers will reach their lowest point for his entire time in office in June, due to the climax of this Saturn transit of his Venus (21Leo30).
At present, Uranus (18 Pisces) is agitating this newly aggressive surge in Bush’s mood, most especially seen from late April through mid-May and again from late June through early August 2007. This aspect will recur in February 2008. Not only is Uranus stimulating Bush’s more agitated mood, but it is simultaneously triggering a great deal of aggression and obstreperousness in the administration as a whole during the same time frame, with Uranus in square to Inaugural Mars (18Sagittarius01). The heightened battling with Congress is greatly accentuated by this aspect, as well as the push for a newly muscular foreign policy. Moreover, Dick Cheney’s chart shows a great deal of intensified aggression, anger, and willingness to take risks from April to mid-August 2007 and in February 2008, due to Uranus square to his natal Mars (17Sagittarius46). We have already seen this manifested through his incendiary rhetoric toward Iran and the off-the-record news stories that he is pushing for a military campaign against Iran rather than diplomacy.
Of further concern than the heightened aggressive impulses in the president and vice president, however, is Bush’s growing tendency to be disconnected from reality, a manifestation of both his solar arc progressed Ascendant conjunct natal Neptune (5Libra56), waxing until October 2007, and the transit of Neptune opposition his natal Venus (21Leo30) and sesquiquadrate his natal Neptune, especially strong from March through early August 2007, December 2007 and January 2008, and September through mid-November 2008. When these two configurations overlap, as they do from March through October 2007, George Bush will be particularly prone to lofty goals not grounded in reality and wishful thinking that is really more like self-delusion. The Saturn transit from June 5 though June 23, 2007, may bring a brief period when reality intrudes on his awareness, but it is unlikely to last. Unfortunately, he will continue to believe in the unbelievable and hold to the untenable for several months yet to come, and to a great extent, right through the remainder of his term in office.
As we move into 2008, many of the brakes will be removed from George Bush, and it seems far more likely that he will act precipitously, especially in March and April 2008, possibly due to some sudden, unexpected and dramatic events. Uranus will move to square his natal Uranus (19Gemini09) and North Node (20Gemini35) for the first of three passes, and Inaugural tertiary progressed Midheaven will be conjunct natal Uranus during that period as well. Also in April 2008, Uranus will begin a prolonged square to the US Mars (21Gemini23), exacerbated by a quincunx from transiting Jupiter for much of April and May. This suggests a renewed and very intense engagement of the US military in some area of the world, quite possibly more supported by the US population than the current conflict.
The obvious questions that come to mind - given the current state of world affairs, the increasing aggression of the president, and the president’s limitless wishful thinking over the effects of his policies - revolve around the future of the US engagement in Iraq and the potential for active hostilities with Iran. (Unforeseen factors are also quite possible given that Uranus often brings totally unpredictable events that transform everything in a moment.) The Gulf War chart suggests that tensions will mount through 2007 and 2008 in Iraq with Pluto squaring the war chart Sun (29Pisces04). Moreover, the situation in Iraq may escalate precipitously in late March and April 2008 and again in August 2008 through the end of the year, with Uranus square the chart Midheaven (20Sagittarius42). But given Bush’s increasingly restless energy and the building tension between the US and Iran, the unfolding situation there seems to be the real wild card, with the potential for the most devastating complications.
At present, tensions are building to a dangerous level between the US and Iran, with provocative actions being taken by both sides. Iran’s continual refusal to halt its nuclear program, despite UN sanctions, has engendered an acrimonious stalemate from which neither side seems willing to budge. Despite recent negotiations over the festering situation in Iraq, the first direct communication in decades between the US and Iran, little may be accomplished with the nuclear issue unresolved. Moreover, provocative actions are mounting on both sides, beginning with the US military’s abduction of 5 Iranians from a long-established Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan back in January. This was followed in March by the seizing of 15 British sailors by Iran, later released, and, more recently, by the arrest in Iran of three Iranian-Americans charged with espionage. Furthermore, amid increasingly loud complaints by the American government about Iranian interference in the chaos of war-torn Iraq, Bush has approved covert operations against Iranian financial interests and overseen a huge military buildup in the Persian Gulf, ostensibly as a form of intimidation. Within the context of this mounting game of brinkmanship, a small spark could easily ignite a huge conflagration.

Unfortunately, there is a great deal in the chart of Iran that suggests enormous tension and anger, as well as the potential for open or covert hostilities through the spring of 2008, and possibly resuming in 2009 and into early 2010. Using the April 1, 1979 chart for Iran, we find a generally aggressive period of several years, running from the end of 2005 through early 2010, when Iran is likely to express a somewhat militant and very assertive position in the world. In 2006, Pluto was square to Iran’s natal Mars (25Pisces37), while progressed Mars was opposite progressed Pluto. By 2007, progressed Mars moved to oppose natal Pluto (18Libra02), a very belligerent, uncompromising, and manipulative combination that will intensify through April 2008. The increased stimulation of bellicose Mars will pick up again around April 2009 and continue through February 2010, when Uranus will be conjunct Iran’s Mars.
The current, inflammatory progression of Mars opposing natal Pluto is repeatedly stimulated by transits from Uranus and Jupiter, most especially from mid-April through early August 2007 and from February through mid-March, 2008. Just as was seen in the charts of George Bush and Bush’s Inaugural chart, these potentially dangerous periods are marked as the most volatile and most likely to erupt into more significant confrontations. Moreover, the Iranian progressed Moon trine natal Pluto may further escalate the situation from June 4 through July 4, 2007.

To further underline the potential for a confrontational mood from Iran during 2007, the chart for the birth of Iran’s parliamentary regime on October 7, 1906, has Mars at 15Virgo40, currently receiving an opposition from Uranus which will be most especially strong from September 2007 through mid-January 2008. In addition, transiting Uranus is currently conjunct the Mars position in Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s chart (15Pisces11) where it will be exact from September through December 2007. These two aspects suggest a time when both Ahmadinejad and the people of Iran will be in quite an aggressive and angry mood, possibly unleashed by sudden, very disruptive events (Uranus).

In the April 1, 1979 chart for Iran, there is an extensive period from late September 2007 through mid-March 2008, as well as June through early August 2008, that suggests a very difficult and possibly painful period for that nation. We find transiting Saturn opposing natal Venus (3Pisces56), square natal Moon (6Gemini48), and stationary conjunct natal Saturn (8Virgo18). With Saturn activating a natal T-square that includes the Moon, Venus, and Saturn in Iran’s chart, the possibility of tremendous suffering by the Iranian people during this time frame should not be ruled out. Unfortunately, this period of potential difficulty corresponds with the traumatic implications in the solar eclipse chart of March 19, 2007, drawn for Tehran. In that chart, we find the eclipse (28Pisces07) exactly conjunct the Ascendant (27Pisces34) and square to Pluto (28Sagittarius55), which is exactly conjunct the MC (28Sagittarius35). This very problematic chart, which also includes a Uranus/Node conjunction and a Saturn/Neptune opposition, can be triggered any time up to a year or more after the event of the eclipse. It suggests the possibility of great disruption and a traumatic situation in Iran through the spring of 2008. Moreover, from November 2007 through early March 2008, with Jupiter crossing 27-28 Sagittarius, Pluto recrossing those degrees, and Mars twice crossing 27-28 Gemini, a period of time is indicated when the dark effects of this eclipse could be set off. This time frame also corresponds in part to the multiple Saturn transits in Iran’s chart.
Thus, we find ourselves facing an increasingly belligerent President Bush in later 2007 and 2008, a US chart with increasing military confrontation likely in 2008, an Iran that is stirred up and angry, and a period of time in Iran when the population may be under great burden or sorrow as a result of some trauma in later 2007 and 2008. If the leadership in each country can keep this potential aggression to verbal posturing and economic confrontation, they might be able to prevent more overt hostilities. It is also possible that the difficulties likely in Iran relate to some natural disaster or economic hardship. It seems more likely, however, that, without a great deal of restraint on both sides, an increasingly confrontational situation with dire consequences for all concerned will be developing between the US and Iran in the later months of 2007 and early 2008. Let us hope that cooler heads will prevail.
