The Holistic Mystic:

Be Still Here Now

by Lonny Brown, HHc.
“There is no past, present or future. Using tenses to divide time is like making chalk marks on water.”

- Janet Frame

Back in the ‘60’s, when the now-famous and beloved new age teacher Ram Dass first visited the “spiritual” East, he found himself still struggling with all the baggage of his western compulsions and neuroses. Early guidance came from another legendary American pilgrim, Bhagavan Dass, in the form of the simple admonition, be here now. Those three words would later become the title of an international best seller, as well as what could be called the first American spiritual mantra.

Mantras are potent formulae for cultivating personal evolution. Like a string of pearls, each word is precious; together they become spiritually potent. Tibetan Buddhism has Om Mani Padme Hum, Hindu India has Om Nama Shivaya, and the Christian world produced the Hail Mary and the Lord’s Prayer. Be Here Now became the mantra of a generation of youthful boomer seekers, who are now – along with Ram Dass himself, facing the other side of life’s inexorable cycle. (His latest book is titled Still Here.)

Profound in its simplicity, be here now (the mantra) endures as a meaningful personal spiritual practice with many dimensions worth exploring. It can be wisely applied in active life situations, or in meditation, its three aspects (or “gates”) coinciding with the three components of breath (in, out, and still). As with the classic three Buddhist marks of existence (impermanence, emptyness, and suffering), if you really “get” one of the triad, you get them all.

Be

We are human beings, not human doings. Yet rarely do we cease our endless activity and consciously occupy our authentic true nature. Everyone is always busy and on their way to somewhere else. While one’s existence seems obvious and automatic, just being is not that easy. Even while ostensibly sitting still (or even sleeping), habitual mental chatter and wayward emotions keep us feeling displaced and restless. This first instruction alone – to just “be” - is worthy of careful inquiry into it’s profound implications.

Here

By it’s very name, you would think that here would be easy to get to. It literally defines the closest proximity. Yet, ironically, in actual experience, here often remains unknown, because we are addicted to activity and drama and anticipating the next exciting distraction. By contrast, here seems known and boring.

Look again. Only right here is found the very essence of life. Here not only means residing in your very center and nowhere else; it is also the confluence of your “outer” and “inner” worlds. Try meditating with eyes open to disperse the assumed distinction between these two seemingly opposite dimensions of consciousness. Here is where creation and creator merge.

Now

Despite our “common sense” perception of time, now is not a mere fleeting instant between the receding past and a looming future. This myopic view renders full appreciation of reality almost impossible. In the above mentioned mantra/breath meditation, the now part coincides with the still moment between exhalation and inhalation, accompanied by a profound sense of relaxation. As this span of non-breathing naturally extends each time, one’s sense of the now also expands..

Actually, the Now is all the time we ever have. Past and future are conceptual illusions, enmeshed in the now of existence. Life and spirit dwell only within this constant present. Discovering this truth is like switching your figure/ground point of reference: Whereas the “now” moment used to be gone in a “split second,” it is suddenly seen as eternal, spacious and infinite. As the contemporary sage Eckhart Tolle says, if you’re ever going to get enlightened, it can only be now. It’s also a great time to sit down, close your eyes, take a deep breath, relax, and remember to be here now.
