Lashon HaRa
It's a Hebrew term that means "the evil tongue" and it refers to the principal that words have the power to manifest. In a mundane sense, it refers to gossip and talking negatively about another. Harm can come from speech. On the esoteric level, it refers to putting out negative energy with one's words.
There is an old tale of a man who went about spreading falsehoods about a local rabbi. After his stories spread, the man came to his senses and realized he had done the rabbi a great injustice. He sought out the rabbi, asked his forgiveness, and pleaded what he could do to correct the damage done. The rabbi answered, "Take a feather pillow, cut it open, and scatter the feathers to the winds." The man thought this was a rather odd request, but easy enough to do.
After fulfilling the request, the man went back to the rabbi, told him that he had gladly done what was requested. The rabbi then said, "Now, go and gather all of the feathers. Because you can no more make amends for the damage your words have done than you can recollect the feathers."
Once one's words are released, the harm they can cause cannot be stopped.
Both mainstream and alternative media share responsibility for some of the most egregious misunderstandings and harm that has come upon this world. The media has been grossly, deviously, and intentionally manipulated by politicians, religious leaders, and activists, alike. It is an insidious abuse of the one place where words serve as guardian.
What leads to unprofessional and unethical practices in journalism? Laziness in research methods, failure to check the reliability of the sources of information, and the economic need for sensationalism to lift ratings, are just the beginning. Add to this mix, revisionism of historical events, hatred, bribery, physical threats, doctored photographs and staged events, and you have the recipe for a level of hate and sensationalism that is destroying us all. Greed, and bias have invaded and influenced the words we read and hear. This lack of ethics is getting people killed, and may well take us into annihilation. Words have that kind of power.

The Workplace Rumor Mill
We all have experienced, or been the recipient of Lashon HaRa at some time or another in the workplace. Competition, pressure, jealousy, and just plain mean spiritedness seem to be tacitly accepted modes of how people often work together. "Just ignore it" is what we have been taught since grade school. Generally, it is sound advice. But what happens when it affects someone beyond bruised feelings?
A few years back, at a reading service I worked, there was a woman always complaining of, and referring to, "The Rumor Mill." After a time, it became apparent that this Rumor Mill was actually her.
Her economic distress, jealousy, and failure to look at what she could do to change her circumstances, created in her a need to manipulate the circumstances of others. This resulted in bad feelings among people, as well as some dismissals.
Her words caused harm to many. It adversely affected their incomes, therefore, the lives of their family members, as well. Very few families can afford the loss of work. Had she taken responsibility for her own fears and failures, she could have found something far better within herself and for others.
The Educational and Real World Experience
Lashon HaRa is alive and well at universities who knowingly promote the biased agendas of foreign governments in exchange for endowments; in an ex-president, who wrote a book, knowingly, and intentionally misrepresenting facts to line his pockets with foreign money to subsidize a humanitarian work meant to heal a bad legacy; and in the revisionism of documented, historical, and scientifically proven facts. It is clearly evident in our current president, and his cabinet, who led us into an unnecessary war that ruined our nation, and ruined many lives. This is when "ignore it" seems an irresponsible act of enabling.
Words from anger, jealousy, greed, hatred, and fear can be deadly. Not standing up to it, and calling it for what it is, for fear of appearing politically incorrect, is deadlier still.
If you ask, "Where does this end? Then question, "Where does this begin?"
Look in the mirror. Every time we feel wronged, jealous, insulted, or adversely challenged, and react in anger, we let those arrows fly. Every time we allow a system, or group of people to bend truth to suit their agenda du jour, we enable them. As a spiritual community, we should know better, teach better, do better, question more, and react without fear.
