Pisces New Moon:
Coming Clean
By Simone Butler

I’ve been knocking around the New Age for a long time. In the 1980s, we ran with the wolves and got embraced by the light. Sweat lodges and firewalks were commonplace. Often, however, this exploration didn’t go deep enough. When I studied energy healing and Goddess symbology with Rosalyn Bruyere at the Healing Light Center in Glendale, she spoke of "whipped cream on bullshit." This was her tongue-in-cheek reference to those who talk a good game, spreading light, when beneath the sweet surface lurks something, well, a bit darker.

This month’s Pisces New Moon offers a chance to consciously engage with our darkness, no matter how unsavory, and bring it into the light. Falling at the tail end of the last sign of the zodiac, this New Moon symbolizes the completion of ancient karmic patterns. Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, squares the Sun and Moon—a planetary push to detoxify from old internal programming that has held us back for ages. Although this is not a total eclipse, the activation from Pluto gives it a comparable level of intensity. Pluto takes us down deep into our cells to find both the pain and passion lurking there. It’s time to release the illusion of separation from Source and step forward as conscious co-creators of our lives.

Pisces’ shapeshifting dimension is where mystical, creative powers lie. It’s the dark, watery realm in which boundaries blur and we feel our connection with all that is. And, it’s the ocean’s power of cleansing and renewal. Compassion, confusion, ecstasy, delusion—all are part of Pisces’ package. The Mayan Calendar reminds us that a purification process is happening between now and 2012 as the Sacred Feminine arises from her ancient burial ground, shakes off the encrusted earth and assumes her rightful place beside the Masculine. And, 2007, year of Mayan creator god/goddess Quetzalcoatl, is an unparalleled chance to manifest whatever we’re thinking (or more importantly, feeling) more rapidly than ever before. This means giving birth to either our dreams OR nightmares. The month of March is key to this process. So, let’s first go deep inside and clear out whatever has held us back, identify our soul’s wish list and make it happen.

A solar eclipse shortcircuits old programs and opens a portal to something new. The March 18 eclipse falls just two days before the Sun’s annual leap into pioneering Aries on March 20th. Thus, it’s a symbolic death paving the way for a fresh new beginning at the Spring Equinox. Watch the world stage for symbolic events, which often occur when a solar eclipse makes a hard angle to an outer planet. In April of 2005, for instance, when a solar eclipse squared Saturn (authority figures), the Pope’s death foreshadowed the decline of outmoded religious belief systems. Similarly, the March 18 eclipse may coincide with the downfall or death of an oppressive (Pluto) regime or individual. Something may come to an end in your own life, as well. Look back to March of 1988, when a solar eclipse triggered the same area of your chart, for clues to how this might manifest. And, consider last September, when a solar eclipse in Virgo fell exactly opposite this upcoming eclipse and may have sparked similar events or feelings.

The lunar eclipse of March 3 has already shaken up the psychic atmosphere, paving the way for change. It’s wise to embrace the impending solar eclipse, even if it means descending to Pluto’s dark realm. In fact, let’s purposely do so. Protective Jupiter holds a favorable trine to stabilizing Saturn all month, acting as a safety net to ensure we won’t fall. The following New Moon ritual can purge us of whatever has been holding us back, and uncover our true treasure—or at least accelerate the process. So, join me at 7:43 p.m. (PDT) on Sunday, March 18 in the following rite:

Find a dark, quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. Burn some sage or incense to create sacred space, and play some soothing music if you like. You may want to imagine yourself, as shamans often do, in the dark hollow of a tree. Invoke the God/Goddess that dwells in nature. Place your hands on your chest and breathe deeply through your heart. Imagine someone you love, to open your heart. Then, dive deeply into the Underworld of your emotions, and ask your intuition to reveal what’s buried there. You may encounter "demons," perhaps in the form of old rage or grief. Breathe into these feelings, and allow any cleansing tears to flow. Someone—maybe you—may need to be forgiven. Take your time with this.

Then lift the wound into your mind’s eye, where you can see it clearly, and let it be transmuted by the light. Imagine the sun’s rays penetrating and healing it. Watch it transform into a multi-faceted gem, your inner treasure. Feel yourself at one with the Divine. The past is healed, the future is wide open. When you’re ready, light a candle and thank the Divine Father/Mother for what you have received. You are now ready to begin anew with the Spring Equinox, the astrological new year!
