Standing Back Up

Vision is not enough. It must be combined with venture. It is not enough to start up the steps; we must step up the stairs. Vaclav Havel
When you are a minister of a growing congregation, you are privy to the full, unabridged version of the Life Story catalogue from your members. Full version meaning you hear the tales of victory and faith made manifest as well as the sad and futile musings of those who have presumably lost hope.
What I have noticed over time is that all of us start out with a hopeful heart. We are born with a faith-infused vision yet somewhere along the road of life, that vision is chipped away by the mallet of circumstance. What we do with those circumstances distinguishes the victor from the victim.
Bonnie was a career woman, head-strong and confident. She rose from a lower middle class background to become the owner of a small but thriving business along the Gulf Coast community. Part of Bonnie’s drive lay in the fact that as a single mother, she wanted to provide the best life possible for her two children. Things were humming along at a pace easy enough for her to stay financially solvent and just cutting edge enough for her to consider making some expanded choices that to the outsider, looked risky.
Right at this time she met Jason, an energetic and gregarious soul who seemed to compliment her duty-driven personality. Jason brought a frivolity to the relationship that Bonnie realized she was hungry for. Although Jason was unemployed and financially in debt, the two began talking about creating a life together and perhaps joining their energies in taking Bonnie’s business to the next level.
They marry. Jason legally adopts Bonnie’s children and for a brief time, life seems to be progressing nicely.
Then one spring morning, driving to work, Bonnie is side-swiped by a speeding teenager who seems to simply ignore the glaring red of the traffic signal.
The impact was severe and Bonnie’s injuries equally serious.
Over the next year as Bonnie goes through painstaking rehabilitation, Jason, asked to oversee the business, seems to lead it down a path of financial ruin.
To Bonnie, it all begins to feel to like a runaway train a hopeless situation with an irreparable outcome.
Divorce papers are filed and to Bonnie’s shock, the courts are torn in their decision over custody of the children.
In a relatable story, Marilyn had met and married a man she described as a persistent charmer. Also, a successful single mother, Marilyn loved her work but felt that her success was hollow without someone to share it with.
In spite of the red flags that her intuition was rapidly waving, she impulsively married John and established a home with him and her young pre-teen daughter.
Within two years, Marilyn had discovered that John was sexually abusing her daughter and immediately began divorce proceedings. Due to negligent representation, what should have been a clear-cut case, has now become mired in the courts.
It is here that I meet both women.
At first their pain and humiliation consume them. Both are frozen with a vitriolic hate that shouts of the unfairness of life.
Yet, to me, the fact they crossed the threshold of our spiritual center spoke volumes of their willingness to move on.
Slowly, over time, Marilyn came to realize that to live in that kind of bitterness would only continue to fuel the abuse that she and her daughter experienced. Still stumbling over her self-imposed guilt, she still kept getting back up, taking small but willing steps up that ladder of vision in order that her daughter’s future could reemerge with some sense of hope. In doing that for her daughter, she began to heal as well.
Bonnie remained unrelenting. As her heart stayed hardened so did her body and the chronic pain of her injuries left her unable to care properly for her children. The courts finally gave full custody of them to Jason, their adoptive father.
Bonnie buried her vision. To her there was no future and in the case of the Chinese proverb, “Fall down seven times, stand up eight,” Bonnie had unconsciously decided to stay down. To her “standing” back up was too painful.
It’s my observation that so many of us have been where these two women are. Painful, sometimes brutal events happen and we are left at that pivotal crossroads where, piled high with the hearts of the emotionally scarred, we must decide if life still affords us vision. This crossroad is the turning point from victim to victor from remaining in a self-imposed powerlessness to taking one’s power back.
Of course, it is here on our recuperative journey forward that we have the choice to begin climbing those visionary steps with the help of forgiveness and a deeper understanding of what it means to regain faith.
I introduced Marilyn to Bonnie.
Through Marilyn’s decision to stand back up, Bonnie is considering it more and more.
I have full faith she’ll start climbing up vision’s staircase again.
Are you willing to stand back up and set your sights forward regardless of what may or may not have happened?
If you do, just imagine the others you can help influence to do the same.

David Ault is highly regarded as one of the finest visionary vocalists and motivational speakers within the New Thought/transformational movement.
His focus on remembering the Divine within and reclaiming that connection has empowered hundreds of thousands on their spiritual journey. The union of Davids charismatic message and heartfelt singing has elevated him to guest speaker of choice in many nationwide churches and global organizations.
As a licensed minister and practitioner through Religious Science International, as well as author, songwriter/recording artist, David has traveled and shared his gifts for well over fifteen years.
Working closely with notables Louise Hay and Marianne Williamson and sharing the stage with many cherished mentors ranging from the late Og Mandino to Dr. Barbara King, Jerald Jampolsky, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Father Leo Booth and Mary Manin-Morrisey, David harvested that experience and developed his own unique style of teaching. His compassionate presence, warmth and humor continue to be an unforgettable guidepost for audiences as they rediscover and reawaken to their personal magnificence.
Starting out as a professional actor and singer, David worked extensively in Broadway tour shows, film and television winning critics awards in both New York and Los Angeles.
Throughout the 1980s, David, along with the late Jerry Florence and Keith Kimberlin made their mark in New thought history by helping pioneer an unexplored musical genrevisionary vocal music. Known as Alliance, their remarkable blend became legendary, helping establish them as one of the most successful vocal groups in the Spiritual recording field.
David continues this musical path with the release of his critically acclaimed recordings, The Healing Bridge, Travelin With The Angels, All Is Calm, All Is Bright, And Then It Is Morning, all distributed through his Los Angeles based organization, The Conscious Company. Now, his highly anticipated literary debut, Where Regret Cannot Find Me, is heralded as a fresh and exciting discovery in Spiritual literature ... a work of pure heart!
I feel extremely blessed and grateful in following this path, says David. It is my ongoing intention to create a message in word and music that assists us all in reawakening to our personal magnificence!
