Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot

How to be a Superhero

by Gigi Miner
I decided to watch a movie one night. This was one of the superhero releases that are so popular again. I have always been a superhero groupie. Do not get me wrong. I rather like the bad boys, what woman does not? But, while the bad boy stirs the lust in me, the superhero holds my heart. So, it seemed appropriate that one of my tarot cards should waft the influence of such heartthrobs.

Our card this month is the King of Wands. A familiar shape graces the background and highlights the wand in the foreground. This is a simple bit of symbolism that heralds big emotions, depending on the person looking at the card. As I watched the movie in question, I could feel myself feeling more than just the movie emotions that are played upon by the writers. I could understand a worldwide need for this kind of hero. The biggest difference is that where our comic books talk about a physical hero to save the world from bad guys and certain destruction, I realized that what we really need are spiritual heroes. After all, as above so below, right? What happens in the spirit manifests in the physical. Many practices, of various religions or beliefs, know that if enough people put forth energy to change something, it can be changed. Prayer, meditation, chanting, whatever it is, there are stories through the ages that such things work. Sadly, what must the spiritual energy have been like during the previous decades to lead us to our world in the state that it is in today?

While our traditional superheroes require amazing, physical abilities to do their jobs, we soon-to-be spiritual superheroes do not need to be able to match speed with a train or melt iron bars with a glance. However, some of the traditional traits remain. Those we can employ in our spiritual superhero business..

What makes a superhero?

• Truth

•Quest for Justice

•Doing what is right vs what is the fad

•Never violating others’ will and choice

•Caring

Let us start with our first quality, truth. Except for a few more roguish heroes, most of our superheroes cannot tell a lie…except to hide their true identity. That seems to be allowed in the world of heroes, so we will let that one slip. There is a fine line between being truthful and being hurtful. Ultimately, truth comes down to what we look for inside of ourselves. Are we truthful with ourselves? Do we project the real us or do we adjust our behavior to fit the situation? One of my favorite quotes is, “To thine own self be true” by William Shakespeare. If you are not honest with yourself first, there is not much hope that you can pull it off with others. If someone asks you if you can help him or her with something and you really do not want to, why do you say “yes”? If your friend asks how wonderful they look in that new outfit, why would you let them walk out of the house looking like that? There are ways to tell the truth without hurting people. For the project that you do not want to do, simply saying “I would love to be of help to you but I cannot do this for you at this time” should be sufficient to convey your desire to help a friend but also the fact that you cannot do it. For our mis-dressed friend, perhaps mentioning another outfit in which they look a hundred times better could sway them to leave the other outfit at home. There are many ways to tell the truth and still be gentle with the person’s feelings. Ultimately, truth is an individual thing. We can tell others the truth provided we are careful with their feelings, but we need to be brutally honest with ourselves.

The quest for justice seems one of the things our superheroes can never seem fully to manage. What is justice? The simplest definition is that of being fair. Fairness is the idea that you do not show favoritism while dispensing your superhero justice. Okay, so our superheroes are only human, most of the time, but true impartiality is extremely hard to master. How might we employ justice in our own lives? One way is not to react via emotions. If we are angry with someone, we do have a tendency to be less fair with him or her. When we favor someone, we tend to be more lenient. Justice requires forethought. It means we have to sit down and think about things rather than reacting in the moment. So, in order to be just, one has to be willing to slow it down to a snail’s pace and weigh the situation before jumping to an emotional conclusion.

Doing what is right. I rather like this one. I have always been a bit of a rebel at heart. Oh, I followed the rules and did as I was told, but deep down I wanted to do the right thing. I can recall a moment in my youth. My younger sister was following me around, doing what little sisters do to annoy their older siblings. My boyfriend of the time bribed her with gum and candy and she disappeared. Now, one might think that I would be thrilled just to have the little brat, I mean, little darling off my back for a few hours. However, I was completely taken aback. In my own mind, she should have split the scene because she was my sister and that was the right thing to do. I refused to bribe her because I viewed it as wrong. Here is a big clue, by the way. How I viewed things may not be how you view them or anyone else for that matter. Doing what is right leads us to our next superhero quality.

Do not violate free will or choice. I find that this is the least followed of all the superhero “rules”. Everyday, people work to manipulate and coerce others to fit what they want. The woman who bursts out into tears because she knows that it will drive her boyfriend up the wall and eventually soften his heart to do as she wishes is violating his free will and choice. The man who uses intimidation to rule the office is violating his employees’ free will. Manipulation is a sometimes subtle, but definitely a violating, method to achieve one’s goals. Freedom consists of following one’s heart just until it hits the border of someone else’s space. Once you cross that faint line, you have violated the other person. This one is not easily learned or understood by many people. Yet, it is one of the essential qualities for a good superhero. Now, when the bad guys violate our space by hurting us or robbing us, they have given up their own free will by stepping over the line, thus it is perfectly just and right for our superhero to knock their blocks off. We, however, are governed by certain laws that prevent us from doing the same, so we have to be a bit more careful in how we dole out justice in our own little world. J

Caring is the one thing that seems to envelope all the rest. If you care about others, then you want to tell them the truth. You want to be fair with them. You will do what is right for them and you will never violate their free will. Caring is the ultimate quality that creates us superheroes. Seeing that person in crisis stirs us to want to help. Hearing the cries of the wounded moves us to ease that pain. Everything that we do begins with caring about humanity. Our superheroes scour the world trying to right the wrongs and keep humanity safe, even from themselves. Still, the best superhero in the world has missed one very important issue. It is from the heart of the person that flows the outer world. If we are to save this world, we first have to save ourselves from the inside out.

In our movies, the superheroes can work near miracles in the physical world, but the problems remain the same. The bad guys never go away and the troubles loom over the world non-stop. This is because nothing on the inside of humanity changes. Thus, our mission, if we choose to accept it, is to help change the spirits of mankind. Kids look up to superheroes. How many children have we seen running around the house with a towel or blanket as their cape? The world needs superheroes. We all need some higher someone to which we may look up. When our gazes are raised higher, so too are our souls. Someone has to fill this need. Someone has to be a spiritual superhero. I will tell you, it is not as easy as the regular superheroes have it. They have it easy. All they have to do is throw a few punches, tie up a few criminals and maybe on occasion set the rotation of the earth backwards on its axis a few times. That is all simple stuff compared to that which the superheroes of the spirit have to contend.

Our brand of superhero has to help people choose their path all while not telling them what to do or manipulating them into doing it. Have you ever tried to get a three year old to do something that did not require physically picking them up and moving them to the spot? Much of our world is like that three year old. They do not want to do what they do not want to do, so nah-nah-nah-nah-nah. The only thing that we can do is to be the example of what is possible and hope that as they grow and mature that they will want to follow those examples.

One of the main reasons that any superhero takes on the job is because they see that there is a need and that no one else will fill it. We cannot wait for someone else to come along and rescue us. We need to rescue ourselves and those willing to go along for the ride.

We do not have cool, tight-fitting outfits to declare our superhero-ness. Many of us, no doubt, would not want to be seen in anything that form fitting anyway. But, we can wear our mark on our hearts, spirits, and souls. Look at our King of Wands again. Inside we have our symbol and our shining energy. Without a word, we can shine that outward and touch others with it. Each of us has a super power, whether it is a love of children, a healing touch with animals, or the finances with which to help a homeless person. We all have a gift. Unwrap it and start using your gift. Start your superhero career today. The pay sucks and most of the time people will think ill of you, but inside, you will know that you are doing what it is that you were born to do. Inside, you will be the Superhero you truly are and were meant to be.

Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
