Astrologer's Notes:

Your Stock of Ages:
Part 2 (Jupiter)

by Noel Tyl

Last month, we discussed the time-architecture of life maturation that has entered into our sociocultural experience, the pace and plan of our personal development. With that knowledge, sitting next to a stranger on an airplane or at a coffeeshop lunch counter --just knowing the person's age-- we can know the person's key life experiences instantly within the time structures we studied in terms of the planet Saturn. We ALL share these experiences; knowing them anchors the Metahelper's skills within development times in life, into the past and into the future.

Similarly, with knowledge of the cycle of the planet Jupiter (|), we can add more to the time superstructure. It is as easy as pie-in-the-sky to sketch out instantly patterns of optimum reward, recognition, and positive strategy in an individual's life development.

Symbolically, Jupiter represents Zeus, chief god in the pantheon of deities in ancient Greece. The Romans called Jupiter, Jove. It's not a big jump at all to the concept of "Jehovah". The point is that, this largest planet --317 times the size of earth, bigger than all the other planets put together!- with its system of sixteen moons, is making a statement of grandness. Empirically, astrology theorists for millennia have seen this statement as opportunity; it is normally good times bestowed by the powers that be!

We have seen [last month; please see "Archives"] the Saturn cycle at 28-30 years, the time it takes the planet to orbit the Sun once. We divided this time span by quadrature: 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, etc. [and instantly now you should be able to recall the important events of change contained in life experiences at those ages]. Similarly with Jupiter, with its cycle around the Sun of 12 years, we have an architecture of reward, which itself can be divided into quadrature marks of 3, 6, 9, 12, etc. -although with Jupiter, the most pronounced effects, the easiest to see and the most delightful to experience, are at ages 24, 36, 48, and 60.

A Starting-Point Twist Indeed, we can begin with birth and know that at age 6 (contemporaneously with transiting Saturn emergent cycle start at age 7) opportunity beckons: we shine with the prospect of now being in school, entering a society outside the home. We are learning to be ourselves, as Jupiter has completed one-half of its opening orbit (age 12) and is smiling at its birth position across the way in the horoscope drawing!

But astrologers go one step further: they actually measure [by reference to the ephemeris] when Jupiter moves on after birth and comes to the birth Sun in the horoscope (transiting Jupiter conjunct the Sun). THAT becomes the starting point of the major Jupiter-Sun cycle. Let's say that one of the first big, big times in your life was when you were elected valedictorian of your graduating class at high school or college! What an honor. The chances are extremely high -and we can assume it for our discussion here- that transiting Jupiter was in contact with your Sun when you were so honored, to the month! From that great opportunity, a cycle of twelve years begins -again, to the month practically.

Think this through in your own life: pick a time of conspicuous reward in your life, then go forward twelve years, another twelve years, etc. and see if echo-reward times occurred for you! Did you sell your first million-dollar insurance policy? Did you get a major promotion? Did you enjoy academic honors or major publicity for personal achievement? Did you land the great contract for your business?

Whether you stick with the cycle beginning at birth (the twelve-year cycle relating Jupiter's progress to its own natal position, 12, 24, etc.) or you start with a major reward time (usually relating Jupiter's progress to the position of your Sun in your horoscope), the sense of cycle must be paramount in your mind. Wonderful times occurring in your life twelve years apart, six years apart.

Examples In my natal horoscope, the Sun and Jupiter are in conjunction with each other at birth, so the Jupiter cycle to its own position is the same as and reinforces the Jupiter cycle to the Sun.

At 12 (first cycle), my mother remarried, and this step-father changed by entire life in terms of direction and quality and inspiration … to this day!

At 24, newly moved to New York City, lost in its immensity, absolutely no glimmer of employment, I suddenly out-of-the-blue received a job offer that was monumentally important and far-reaching in significance. A depressing rainy, Friday afternoon of depression, and the phone rang!

At 30 [and note here how the Jupiter cycle in quadrature resonates, coincides with the major Saturn return cycle at 28-30], I made my debut as an opera singer at the New York City Opera and received major agent representation.

At 36, my first astrology book contract was fulfilled.

At 48, as president of a Public Relations and Advertising Agency, I personally won a huge, national contract, against all odds!

At 60, shining career attention, producing an Astrology convention, and more.

The sense of Jupiter The sense of Jupiter is a nice "feel". It piques our curiosity, lifts our spirit, and emboldens our dreams. Once we get into the saddle of successful occurrence, the cycle seems to take care of itself, it seems to beckon, to speak repeatedly. In my case examples above, I could subdivide further and share smaller blips on the opportunity screen. They were there, and I am grateful.

But there's a lesson within this sense of Jupiter: one must be prepared, one must be trying hard. Sir Isaac Newton had to go into the garden before the apple would drop!

And indeed, the environment must cooperate. If there is a horrible recession in business, if investment decisions have met with disaster, if illness has invaded the system, if family crises have erased normal life performance, opportunity seems to vanish. Yes, with the spirit of Jupiter, the cloud with its silver lining is very real, but you can't bank on it. The train must make it down the track into the right station for the schedule to be kept.

We must see that the Jupiter spirit is optimism for sure, but it can blur our vision. If there is a down-pull within the inner environment -sadness, sickness, futility, depression (all things that may be suggested by technical "other" measurements in the full horoscope) the Jupiter cycle may be detoured. It is not automatic.

A final statement is can be inspirational: it is our inner environment that establishes so much of our receptivity to growth, to change, to reward. And this is what all of us Metahelpers are bound to do: to help others live in their light and in their time to reach the sun!
