Astrologer's Notes:

Can Hillary Win?

by Basil Fearrington
The 2008 Presidential campaign is underway. The cable news channels are giving us daily coverage about one candidate or the other and a day doesn’t go by without hearing the names of Giuliani, Obama, McCain, etc.

This year’s race is highlighted by the inclusion of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, who, at the time of this writing, are at least the most publicized [if not] the leading Democratic candidates. Although we have had a Black American (Jesse Jackson) and a woman (Geraldine Ferraro) involved in the race for the presidency before, Jackson did not have a realistic chance to win and Ferraro was selected by Walter Mondale to be his running mate. The difference now is that both Obama and Clinton are looked at as having realistic chances to win the Democratic nomination for the presidency. Culture and gender has added a lot of spice to this race.

As of yet we do not have timed birth data for Barack Obama so we cannot make a solid astrological comparison between him and Mrs. Clinton. However, Obama’s official announcement that he would run for the top office came on a day when the Moon was Void of Course! I have followed, for a long time, the relationship between “running for office announcement charts” and the eventual outcome in reality. In almost every occurrence where the announcement to run was made when the Moon was VOC, the candidate fell short of victory. While there are exceptions to every astrological rule, it remains to be seen whether someone with Obama’s idealism, let alone his culture, can be elected in this conservative-heavy political climate.

Hillary Clinton’s inclusion in the presidential race is interesting for many reasons, that are highlighted by her gender and the reality that her victory puts Bill Clinton back in the White House. It would, in effect, be the first time in history that an ex-President and his First Lady made it back to the White House albeit in opposite roles. There are people in America who would rather see almost anyone in the White House than the Clintons, who really seem to drive the Conservatives nuts! So with the inclusion of Obama and Mrs. Clinton, we have a race with a flavor that has never existed before.

The Profile

The first data that was printed about Hillary Clinton years ago was incorrect. The data is, October 27, 1947 at approximately 8:00 AM, not PM. I played in the band of a celebrated singer at a fund raiser when Hillary was running for the senate seat in New York. It was there that I established communication with a representative of hers who emailed me later with, “the time is 8:00 AM.” Since we know that few people are born on the hour, the real time was probably 7:xx, close to 8:00 but before 8:00. I am using the 8:00 AM time here because I have not yet worked out a rectification to give a credible alternate time.

The first impression of this horoscope shows us an upper hemisphere emphasis. Back in the old days, the astrologers would inaccurately suggest that such an emphasis reflects extroversion. This line of thinking was because planets above the horizon are all visible in the sky at the time of birth so the person was associated with this sense of open visibility. This is absolutely not the case! The upper hemisphere emphasis focuses on the 10th House as opposed to the 4th. It is an indication that the orientation in life is or needs to be out in the world. The person is usually pulled that way because there is something in the early environment that does not provide the necessary anchoring. When one’s focus is out in the world, especially when it leads to public recognition, you become subject to public scrutiny that leads to both adulation and being pushed around by what seems to be fate, all leading to a sense of victimization. Everything else that follows in her horoscope will be under this umbrella that we find in the first impression.

The Sun-Moon-Ascendant blend of Scorpio-Pisces-Scorpio obviously shows a great deal of sensitivity/idealism that couples with the need to have control. The Scorpio archetype is renown for needing to have control of things, usually by knowing everything that there is to know about people, places, and things. Interestingly, the Sun here is unaspected and is “buried” in the 12th House. This is very different than her husband’s aspected 11th House Sun. It tells us that she has to try much, much harder to shine. In the process of doing so, she can come across as not being genuine because it doesn’t come naturally. At the same time, this super effort to shine gives even more emphasis to the Scorpio archetype. Make no mistake about it… this is not a woman that you want to mess around with, especially when you add the intensification of sensitivity that is usually reflected when Uranus squares a Pisces Moon. If we take nothing else from all of this, we can assume that there is a super-strong need for control that couples with enormous sensitivity. She probably doesn’t forget slights, insults, and has a close relationship with the concept of revenge. On the positive side, she simply must be very strong, very determined, and very focused. I might add that the Mutual Reception of the Sun and Pluto punctuates all of this.

Mercury retrograde is always a symbol of subjectivity in the thought processes. This means that a personal interpretation is given to what one thinks, hears, and sees. Assumptions are made based on a personal, subjective value system. Venus conjoins Mercury, confirming the idealism that is typically found in the Moon in Pisces. However, Mercury is exactly squared by Saturn and this gives the need to think and communicate a strong need to be strategic, rigid, and there is typically a lack of openness to things that one is unaccustomed to. Any hard aspect relationship between Saturn and Mercury has a potential to reflect great academic prowess but rigidity in the thought processes is often the reason why the academic prowess is so heightened. This aspect shows a clear need to communicate strategically and this is a major criticism of Mrs. Clinton in the way she communicates, corroborating the unaspected Sun. She will appear Saturnian, especially when compared to the enormous charisma that her husband has when he speaks. Saturn’s rulership of the 3rd House even further emphasizes this strategic mindset and introduces a parental tension factor (Virgo on X) and, as well, introduces us to a most fascinating area of this horoscope – the sexual profile.

Venus in Scorpio in XII is a tough position for Venus. It is squared by the Leo stellium of Mars, Saturn, and Pluto. Venus rules XI. This tells us that there are concerns within her about her lovability and her ability to attract others. Venus also rules VII!!!!!!! We have already seen this symbolism at work via the Monica Lewinsky marital troubles and an alleged host of others. When you add Neptune=Sun/Moon, it is clear that this is a very stressed horoscope regarding all things Venusian. Relationships are not easy. There is inner stress about how she looks and how attractive she is. And lastly, the sexual profile is stressed.

Mars, ruler of V, is exactly conjunct Pluto, both squaring Venus. The challenged Mercury rules VIII and, of course, is exactly squared by Saturn. My word for Pluto contacts is, “extreme.” In contact with other planets, Pluto can reflect the most extreme dimensions of the planet being contacted. When it comes to Venus, the romantic and sexual components are usually way out of perspective either because it is too active or too inactive. This is one of the most difficult sexual profiles that could be and yet she is married to a man whose sexual profile is the exact opposite. One can assume that this has been a tremendous point of contention in their marriage.

We can summarize Hillary Clinton’s personal profile as one that is tightly wound up, not very open, strategic, and because of all of this, the strike against her will be that people sense it all and it makes them think things about her that can work against her. Like it or not, presidential races are popularity contests as much as they are contests of ideologies. She is going to inspire definite likes and dislikes as she is not the charmer that her husband is.

But Can She Win?

Mrs. Clinton is entering a Saturn Return! That is huge. For a politician, these Returns are typically indicative of a major change in the structure of their lives. (Look at what has happened to President Bush during his Saturn Return. His Administration and everything about his presidency has turned into a huge mess of scandals and public disapproval.) With Saturn racing to her Midheaven, which would indicate a major time for the development of ambition, this could be seen as a good omen although it could, as well, be seen as the end of her political life but I don’t think so at this point in time. I think that her ambition is at its highest point of development and therefore has the greatest potential for positive manifestation.

The road is not paved in gold in 2007 for Mrs. Clinton, astrologically speaking. Saturn and Neptune square the Ascendant, which would normally be a health concern and may very well be with SA Sun=Mars/Saturn and SA Sun=Sat/Plu. The Neptune transit lasts through 2008 and it raises the eyebrow because in Chelsea’s horoscope (February 27, 1980; 11:24 PM CST; Little Rock, Arkansas), we find that in the summer of 2008, transiting Saturn opposes her Sun (ruler of X) and transiting Neptune opposes the Midheaven while SP Moon conjoins the MC and SA ASC=Mars/Saturn, not to mention SA MC=Neptune forming. This is a tremendous parental emphasis that does not exactly suggest a day at the beach. It is quite often the case that there parental developments are more easily and readily seen in the horoscope of the child rather than the parent. But in this case, with the transiting Neptune squaring Hillary’s Ascendant during the time that Chelsea has the parental axis so highlighted in a challenging way, it gives cause for alarm. Possibilities are endless so I cannot begin to speculate but it will be interesting to see how things develop and look during the summer of 2008 for the Clinton family.

At the end of the day, looking at the end of 2008, we see that Hillary has transiting Jupiter square her Sun ALONG WITH (!!!!!!) SA Jupiter=Sun. You just cannot do any better than that. Without having seen the horoscopes of all candidates, you cannot make a certain deduction. It is too soon. We need to see the horoscope of the person who would be her challenger if she wins the Democratic nomination. That said, it is hard to imagine that any other candidate has as fortunate an astrological setup at that time (November, 2008) as does Hillary Clinton. If this is the case, and if something grievous doesn’t take her out of the race during the summer of 2008, I think that Bill and Hillary Clinton will be back in the White House.
