Human Natures

by Martin Lass

If we wish for growth, healing, transformation, evolution of consciousness and/or a return to our Divine origins in Spirit, we must understand the process which will “get us there.” And, for this, we must understand the nature of our body and mind, even beyond the common views about this, which, from one perspective, contribute to keeping us trapped at our current level. To this end, in last month’s column, we started talking about our personas and our Natures. Let’s review some of this before going on…

Personas Reviewed

In last month’s column (see archives), we discussed the idea of personas, i.e. that our waking consciousness is not as continuous or unified as we think, but rather consists of a multitude of alternatively conflicting and agreeing impulses—sensations, emotions, and thoughts.

We have called these personas, which are the “pieces” of me, of you, of each and every one of us. Each persona (together with other personas of “like mind”) alternatively takes the reigns of our waking consciousness and, while in the driver’s seat, asserts that it is the “one and only” for that time, ignoring and/or unaware of most or even all of the other personas that make up the totality of our psyches.

Put simply, in one minute, “I” may be happy; in the next minute, “I” may be sad. An hour from now, “I” may be tired; tomorrow, “I” may have a lot more energy. Today, “I” make a resolve to start doing my yearly taxes tomorrow; tomorrow comes, and “I” decide to put it off another day. Today, “I” like you, because you gave me the attention I needed; tomorrow, “I” may not like you so much, because you seem distant and cold. And so on and so forth.

I say “I” to each one, as though it were the same person, because my upbringing, social conditioning, education, and the consensus reality tells me that I am one person. Not only this, but I only have one body and one name, so this reinforces the feeling of being one person.

All these personas are the pieces of me, my life, and the world around me. (Why are they also “the world around me”? Because the world around me is a perfect reflection of everything that I am. This is a topic for a future column.) I am not as aligned and unified as I would like to think. Why do we each consist of a collection of fragmented personas? And why do we not notice this, but rather continue to believe that we are just one person?

Answering the first question, let’s just say that it’s because of our descent from unity into duality, our Fall from the spiritual world into the material world, which is also called the Wounding. As far as why we don’t notice this fragmentation, we will discuss this in a future column.

As far as our descent into duality, the purpose of this is to give us each the opportunity to see ourselves in the mirror that duality presents so we can awaken to our true and Divine nature and thus return to unity and Spirit (the ascension, the Healing, the evolution of consciousness), now awakened where before we were unconscious.

Persona Groups, Roles, and “Hats”

The collection of my personas is not completely random, though; otherwise, I would not be able to function in the real world. Personas tend to group together according to their particular affinities, similarities, perspectives, biases, stances, judgments, charges, polarities, and so forth. Such groups can be simple or more complex. Some examples of persona groups are the roles I play in life, i.e. the “hats” I put on, e.g. now I am a writer, now I am a father, now I am a friend to you, now I am a supporter of some cause, now I am a wine connoisseur, now I am an adherent of a particular religion, now I am a Trekkie, etc. Other persona groups are not so well defined, but are loosely bound together by a common stance, gripe, judgment, resentment, infatuation, belief, idea, opinion, etc.

By far the largest collections of my personas consist of what we are going to call Natures. (We started to talk about his in last month’s column.) As a whole, the complete collection of my yet-to-be aligned, yet-to-be unified personas is called my Earthly Nature.

Earthly Nature

My Earthly Nature corresponds to personality, to ego or mind (in the Buddhist sense), to the natural body (in the Christian sense), to the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of my existence. Collectively, it is my identity, as opposed to my Being or essence.

My Earthly Nature is dualistic in perception and manifestation and is designed to live and operate in the dualistic material world, as opposed to my higher Nature, which is designed to live and operate in the more unified spiritual world. (More on this below.)

My Earthly Nature’s primary goals are survival, safety, security, comfort, and pleasure, as opposed to my higher Nature, which seeks meaning, purpose, and the larger Plan of my existence. Earthly Nature’s goals serve my physical existence, of course. Its driving forces are pain, pleasure, guilt, and fear, where as my higher Nature’s driving force is (unconditional) Love. Earthly Nature lives in the continual replaying of the past (memory) and in the constant projection of the future (imagination), whereas my higher Nature lives in the Now, which contains past, present, and future.

Earthly Nature consists of three sub-Natures, which we will call Physical Nature, Emotional Nature, and Mental Nature, which in turn correspond to sensation, feeling, and knowing. In Earthly Nature, these three sub-Natures are relatively separate, mostly at odds with each other, disconnected, and have their own needs, wants, agendas, and motivations. On the other hand, my next higher Nature—Spiritual Nature—consists of these same three sub-Natures, but brought together consciously and intentionally into greater alignment and unity. We will discuss how to bring together these three sub-Natures in a future column.

Three Types of People

Everybody has these three sub-Natures. However, every person tends to live more in one of these three Natures than the other two. Some people live more in the body than in the emotions or intellect. Some live more in the emotions than in the body or the intellect. And some live more in the intellect than in the body or the emotions.

So, this defines three basic types of people in the world, the fact of which explains many things about why we each relate to, and get along with some people but not others. (There is also the question of the “polarity” of each of our Natures, which explains more about interpersonal relationships, but this is a topic for another time.)

Other Natures

Apart from our three basic Natures, we also have other Natures, such as Spiritual Nature, aforementioned. An understanding of all our various Natures is vital if we are to grow, heal, transform, heal, and evolve in consciousness, because the Natures give us a “road map” of where we are headed and how to “get there.” So, let’s explore each of our Natures in detail…

Your Seeker Nature is “you,” as you currently perceive yourself in this lifetime. It is the “part” of you that journeys between your Solar Soul at the boundary of the solar system and the dualistic material world (Earth and incarnation). (The astronomy and metaphysics of this will be discussed in a future column.)

Your Seeker Nature is the “hero” of all ancient mythologies, fairy tales, religious parables and allegories, Native lore, and more. And it potentially encompasses all Natures up to and including the Solar Soul itself.

Put in simplest terms, your Seeker Nature is the relatively conscious “observer” of your life. It is the focal point of self-awareness, no matter how embryonic this awareness might be. It is the Seer, Seeing the Seen.

The focal point of your self-awareness—Seeker Nature—is portrayed in theoretical physics as a kind of “window” passing over a “tapestry” of an immutable spacetime universe, where time and space, past and future, near and far, are simply illusions created by this passing “window” of consciousness.

The focal point of your self-awareness has also been called “the assemblage point” by Carlos Castaneda’s teacher, Don Juan Matus.

Before conscious and intentional strivings toward greater Truth, Light, Love, and Oneness, the focal point of your self-awareness is “trapped” within the all-pervasive and hypnotic conditioning of the consensus reality and within the limitations of the Earthly Nature and its dualistic perceptions of the world.

How to “break out” of this “prison” of unconsciousness is the subject of all S.O.L.A.R.® practices and will be covered in part in future columns.

Your Seeker Nature has the Gift of free will to choose to align with higher consciousness—with Spirit—or not. Put another way, your Seeker Nature has the choice whether to listen to the “messages” of the Solar Soul and act consciously or listen to the “messages” of the Earthly Nature and react automatically.

When listening to the “messages” of the Solar Soul, your Seeker Nature has the possibility of consciously directing the voluntary nervous system—of consciously directing your life.

Conversely, when listening to the “messages” of the Earthly Nature, your Seeker Nature lives under the illusion that it consciously directs the voluntary nervous system when, in truth, everything in your life “happens” automatically and unconsciously, mirrored in the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic systems); in short, you are actually “asleep,” but are convinced that you are “awake,” as in a dream about being awake.

Your Earthly Nature. We have discussed Earthly Nature already. But to add to this, although your Earthly Nature has been designed and is sustained by higher consciousness (higher than your own), it has no free will or self-imbued consciousness, but simply reacts to internal and external circumstances, events, and stimuli, like a robot, albeit an extremely complex one. The complexity of the Earthly Nature can lead us into mistaking its automatic reactions for conscious actions. This is one of the reasons why we mistakenly think we are one person where, in truth, we are many personas in the one body, defined by one name. (Incidentally, most non-human animals consist only of an Earthly Nature and no Seeker Nature or higher Natures.)

Despite the limitations of the Earthly Nature, it nonetheless serves a higher Purpose, and we (as Seeker Natures) could not spiritually/materially transform/evolve without it. It encompasses and mirrors the Earthly lessons, challenges, charges, issues, and wounds of our Seeker Nature in any given lifetime, but in forms able to be manifested in the dualistic material world. In this way, it provides a mirror in which we can see these lessons, challenges, charges, issues, and wounds, deal with them, and so awaken further to our true Nature as Truth, Light, Love, and Oneness.

In short, Earthly Nature provides the raw material—the “lead”—for the alchemy of spiritual transformation.

We discard our Earthly Nature at the end of each incarnation and take on a new Earthly Nature at the beginning of each new incarnation—a new Earthly Nature that is more appropriate to the lessons, challenges, charges, issues, and wounds we wish and need to deal with in a given lifetime.

The only thing we (as Seeker Natures) take with us from lifetime to lifetime (effectively) is 1) what we have learned to Love unconditionally (which equals true consciousness) and 2) what we have yet to learn to Love unconditionally. This latter “part” of our consciousness is in an unawakened and unmanifest state and, as such, requires the “interface” of an Earthly Nature to become manifest, this being the Gift of incarnation.

As previously stated, your Earthly Nature consists of three sub-Natures: Physical Nature, Emotional Nature, and Mental Nature.

Your Physical Nature is your body and its integrated systems, ruled by the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic systems) and the lower “layers” of the brain and spine. In astrology, your Physical Nature is ruled by Mars.

Your Physical Nature “sees” the world through the dualistic senses—black or white, pain or pleasure, right or wrong, good or bad, light or dark, hot or cold, salty or sweet, fragrant or pungent, and so forth.

The fundamental core of the Physical Nature is the neuron, which, in the wake of sensory input (stimulus from the senses), either “fires” or not, registers or not; when it does “fire,” it “records” either “pain” or “pleasure,” automatically, and “stores” the result in the “neural network.” In this way, at its core, your Physical Nature is fundamentalist, “one-eyed,” and “sees” things in terms of black or white.

Repeated experience gradually “builds up” a hierarchy of reactions to stimuli, from simple “yes” or “no” reactions to more complex reactions involving multiple considerations (shades of gray, effectively). This hierarchy of consciousness is mirrored in the “layers” of your brain, spine, and central nervous system.

At higher levels of operation, your Physical Nature has the potential to register innumerable shades of gray between the polarities of black and white (in mathematical terms, all shades of gray between the polarities of black and white effectively correspond to the limits of the calculus) and thus to approach the real experience of Love (in the corpus callosum and in the energetic heart).

As a whole and via the balancing system of the autonomic nervous system (consisting of sympathetic and parasympathetic systems), your entire physiology mirrors elations and depressions, excesses and deficiencies, exaggerations and minimizations, and commissions and omissions of perception (of all Natures) in hyper- and hypo-reactive excesses and deficiencies of physiological functioning.

The result is illness and disease (corresponding to lop-sided perceptions of all or any Natures) and health and well-being (corresponding to balanced perceptions of all or any Natures). Both health and disease are present in all Natures; moreover, both health and disease serve higher Purposes in and for our lives.

Your Physical Nature can be divided further into Sensory Nature (sensory input), Instinctual Nature (specific automatic hereditary and genetic habitual functioning, patterns, reactions, and behaviors of the autonomic nervous system), Motor Nature (movement), and Sexual Nature (reproductive energy, drives, and behavior), each of which overlaps the others in various ways. (These sub-Natures are discussed in various S.O.L.A.R.® books, yet to be released.)

The Physical Nature’s awareness is sensation.

Your Emotional Nature consists of the collection of your polarized, dualistic, expressed and repressed emotions/feelings—effectively “personas,” which S.O.L.A.R.® also calls your “inner sons and daughters” and “the pieces of you,” among other such descriptions. In astrology, your Emotional Nature is ruled primarily by the Moon and secondarily by Venus.

In physics, your “personas,” “inner sons and daughters,” or “pieces of you” are effectively fermions—i.e. charged particles of Light/consciousness (such as electrons and positrons), manifested in time and space as matter and anti-matter and/or as polarized energy. Your consciousness is effectively a cloud of charged particles of Light/consciousness (Light taken in its broadest terms to mean all electromagnetic energy in the cosmos, from the longest radio waves to the shortest cosmic rays and beyond). (Demartini, after Dyson and Hoyle et al.)

Each such emotion/feeling constitutes a separate, more or less connected or disconnected piece of your waking consciousness, but generally considers itself the whole of you for the time that it occupies the driver’s seat of your waking consciousness, which may be anything from a fraction of a second to days and more.

Your Emotional Nature is seated primarily in the solar plexus and is connected to the brain via the vagus nerve. As emotions “evolve” into (unconditional) Love, they “rise” into the Heart center.

Emotions are fragments of unconditional Love and, as such, are considered conditional love by S.O.L.A.R.®. Unconditional Love is not an emotion, but is the synthesis of all emotions (as taught by Dr. John Demartini).

The Emotional Nature’s awareness is feeling.

Your Mental Nature consists of the collection of your polarized, dualistic, expressed and repressed thoughts, ideas, beliefs, stances, opinions, judgments, and so forth—effectively also “personas,” which S.O.L.A.R.® also calls your “inner sons and daughters” and “the pieces of you,” among other such descriptions. In astrology, your Mental Nature is ruled my Mercury.

Each such thought and so forth constitutes a separate, more or less connected or disconnected piece of your waking consciousness, but generally considers itself the whole of you for the time that it occupies the driver’s seat of your waking consciousness, which may be anything from a fraction of a second to days and more.

Your Mental Nature is seated primarily in the brain—in the “neural network”— and is connected to the rest of the body via the central nervous system in general. As thoughts and so forth “evolve,” they “descend” into the Heart center, meeting the emotions that are simultaneously “rising” from the solar plexus.

Thoughts and so forth are considered “half-truths” by S.O.L.A.R.® inasmuch as they are fragments of the greater Truth of your potential Spiritual Nature and beyond.

It is important to note that, according to S.O.L.A.R.®, thoughts and emotions represent two sides of the one coin of consciousness. Thoughts always have associated emotions, and emotions always have associated thoughts, no matter how seemingly fleeting these may be. The idea that thoughts and emotions have separate existences is one of the illusions of our supposedly “waking” consciousness.

One of the aims of the S.O.L.A.R.® Way is to re-establish awareness of the otherwise-hidden connections between your emotions and thoughts (among other “parts” of you), bringing them together in the fusion vessel of your (spiritual) Heart and into the state of consciousness previously referred to as Presence. (See the archives.)

Effectively, a “persona,” “inner son or daughter,” or “piece of you” is a hybrid emotion-thought (or a collection thereof).

The Mental Nature’s awareness is knowing.

Your Spiritual Nature is the growing congregation of your inner sons and daughters (personas) that have been brought together in the fusion vessel of your (spiritual) Heart and have been healed, wholed, and brought together in Presence—brought together into alignment with a higher aim, with Spirit, and, ultimately, with your Solar Soul.

In astrology, your Spiritual Nature consists of the harmonious blending of the inner planets—Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and the Asteroids—in the fusion vessel of the Sun, thus opening the “way” to the outer planets.

As your Spiritual Nature grows and expands, so does your Seeker Nature (you), which, in turn, has the potential to encompass all Natures within its awakening awareness.

Your Spiritual Nature acts as a kind of temporary “steward”—a temporary “master of the house,” so to speak. (G. I. Gurdjieff called Spiritual Nature “magnetic center” and “steward,” and he associated its growth with the growth and “fixing” of the astral or kesdjan body.)

Spiritual Nature’s “job” is to put the “house” of your consciousness “in order,” to bring your lost, wayward, and rebellious inner sons and daughters into alignment in your (spiritual) Heart, and, generally, to prepare your Being for the appearance and “return” of the Master, this being your Solar Soul in alignment with Spirit, solar consciousness, galactic consciousness, and, ultimately, cosmic Oneness.

Put in simple terms, your Spiritual Nature constitutes the harmonious “blending” and alignment, in Presence, of your Physical, Emotional, and Mental Natures.

Higher Natures

We have higher Natures, too, that go beyond our current discussions. In short, though, there is Heart Nature, which is the higher octave of Emotional Nature. And there is Crown Nature, which is the higher octave of Mental Nature. Then there is Solar Nature, which is the harmonious blending of Spiritual Nature, Heart Nature, and Crown Nature. And then there is the Solar Soul, which is the highest, most aligned and unified manifestation of you within the boundaries of the solar system. Solar Soul contains all other Natures, holographically. (Seeker Nature—the awareness of you—potentially encompasses all Natures up to and including Solar Soul.)

Beyond the boundaries of the solar system, there are yet higher Natures, expressing ever greater alignment and unity as we ascend back to Source, back to Spirit, back to Truth, Light, Love, and Oneness.
