Teachings from the Western Mystery Traditions:
The Esoteric "Paths of Return"
Your Metaphysical Life,
The Western Way

When you embark upon a metaphysical odyssey, such as you’ll find in your Oracle readings, or when seeking the mystical teachings of the Buddha or the Christ, you are following in the footsteps of those who have gone before, travelers who have left markers along the way to assist us in our awakening. When recognized, honored and followed, this process of exploring the subjective higher and wider worlds imbues our lives with magic, enhanced creativity, and awe. It reminds us that we are living a bigger story here than our mere ego’s daily life truly heroes and heroines upon an epic journey. And once you really “get this,” it is very healing for your psyche, or your soul.
The trump cards in a Tarot deck, for instance, reveal our archetypal story beautifully. A Tarot reading never “tells your fortune” deterministically. It simply out-pictures the archetypes currently at work in your subconscious mind, appearing in your psyche from the Collective mind at any given time. A reading offers you help from the Collective Unconscious Mind (known as Mt. Olympus in myth) where our bigger story unfolds.
This is helpful because most of our angst in life comes from getting all caught up in our little stories as though our conditions we encounter are who we are. And this puts us in a state a Self-forgetting -- which reminds me of one of my favorite Joseph Campbell quotes: “You better have a great big story or no story at all; it’s all those little stories in the middle that get us in so much trouble.”
The Ideal, or the supreme Will of God, is also written in the symbols of the Zodiac and the study of astrology. So again, we are offered a way to see ourselves more in our wholeness than in our fragmented ego’s daily plights. This art falls under the rulership of Aquarius, which governs the Ideal of humankind. In an astrological reading, the Zodiac’s 11th House of Aquarius will show you the highest possibilities and the essential purpose of your quest. But between the Ideal and the actual manifestation of this goal, we all find many planes of interference in our attempts to translate the divine into our individual human life. So it’s our job to learn of our personal shadow’s ways of sabotage and defeat and purify our minds and hearts. Otherwise, we will never complete our sacred mission here, which is to come fully into our human/divine selves and bring Love and Wisdom to all our endeavors here.
Archetypes are messengers between the worlds of the sacred and the mundane, the divine gods or “types” that make up all possible ways of being human. These timeless figures and holistic patterns remind us we are greater than we realize, that we possess the sacred powers of a Human Soul, our own species’ archetype.
In the symbolism of Tarot, The Fool is the eternal Sojourner who never lets us forget that we are consciousness, and that the journey itself is our Home. Anytime we complete a human process, we are to throw the knapsack over our backs and head out again, in a state of gay abandon and surrender, seeking our next human lesson in Love. We were never designed to attach to anything or anyone egoistically, but to live eternally in freedom and love, fully present here both as individual souls and together with members of our one Soul family of Humanity.
So when we do get “hooked” in something or someone we just can’t let go of, the Buddha reminds us that attachment is the key to suffering. And Jesus models for us that we are here to do our Creator’s business of bringing spirit to this world. Together, these two holy Sons of God can guide us into our true Selfhood. It takes both the Eastern and the Western way to make us whole. The Buddha teaches us detachment. dispassion. and discrimination. And Jesus, who embodied the Christ Consciousness for 3 years, teaches us the inner experiential process of individuation, initiation, and identification with the one and true Self, our divine archetype.
This distinction of whether we find salvation by rising up and out of this world in constant stillness and meditation, or by being here as fully participating embodied souls, is the classic difference between the Eastern and Western Mystery Traditions. Though Kashmir Shaivism and the Eastern paths of Tantric Yoga do teach us to love both Shiva and Shakti and to honor our human ways as “the play of consciousness” on earth.
The Western Way teaches that if we try to stay removed from full involvement in ordinary human life, the Christ Consciousness reminds us we are here to dance through all human conditions thoroughly so we can know them, high and low. Only then, through our very way of being, which is our spiritual essential Self in action, can we transform it all into light and love. We take on, learn what is love and what isn’t, and then let go and move on. As consciousness itself, that is our natural way to flow through time.
The Christ Consciousness is the Cosmic Christ, the most powerful archetype Humanity has ever experienced. And it is conjectured that this Divine Impulse of Love comes not only to our planet but anywhere consciousness is awakening when “its time has come.” Jesus embodied this Divine Impulse for 3 years of His life. Many believe the Buddha and Krishna were also representatives of this extra-planetary Wonder who pervades the consciousness of the seekers of every Age. This potent Cosmic Force manifests in a high Initiate to show us how to master the conditions in our earth life. Many sense the timing is ripe for a return of this high energy.
As evolutionary beings, we have to be concerned with the workings of this Manifest Divinity. Those who follow spiritual paths that do not look upon creation as real tend to take us out of body so that we are of no use here. They regard this manifested world as “illusion” and try to withdraw from participation here, believing our salvation is in some heaven beyond this material world.
Manifesting the Divine Life in each of our individual human lives is the “divine ordeal” we each experience on this path of direct knowing. It’s the process of marrying our ego personalities with our soul. And we will remain here until we learn all our lessons in Love and have mastered the conditions here, at which time we will have done our work and can say, as our Elder Brother Jesus said, “It is finished.”
We can see the disastrous effects of dividing spirit and matter, which has caused many to cloak themselves in a blanket of spiritual inertia, depleted of spiritual force, believing that being human is “bad,” and therefore finding no clear path to believe in and follow while here. When we think like this, we’ve lost the power that accompanies a true understanding of our destiny. This is a seedbed for the ego to manifest separatism, war, competition, greed, insecurity, and the harmful chaos all this brings.
So we now await the day when all spiritual paths will once again illumine the deep and profound sacredness of this Manifest Divinity in which we are all intricately involved, whether we are conscious of it or not. These deep promptings gratify our souls. We love to hear of the Divine World Drama in which we all play a part. It gives our lives a sense of spiritual purpose.
Egos learn through cognition; souls learn through recognition: the Wisdom of the Ages already resides within us all. We simply must develop the eyes to see and the ears to hear our greater story. Otherwise, we get trapped in our earthly karma and fail to use our true powers as the one Human Soul.
