Topaz
""The stone of true love""

by Raven
Topaz is a very attractive gemstone with brilliant colors, high luster, and well formed, multifaceted crystals that have been used in jewelry for centuries. In ancient times, Topaz is known as an amulet to ward off the evil eye. It was tied to the left arm as protection against any curse, to guard against liver trouble and used in ceremonies for healing and contacting the spirits.

Topaz is controlled by a chain like structure of connected irregular octahedrons, which have aluminum in the middle surrounded with oxygen. Above and below the aluminum are the hydroxide or fluoride ions. The chains of octahedrons are held together by individual silicate tetrahedrons but it is the octahedron chains that give topaz its crystalline shape and the hardest silicate mineral.

The colors are any shades of yellow to brown, light to medium blue and colorless but rarely pink. Although popular colors are often enhanced by heat or radiation like: blue or greenish-blue, sherry and pink. The jewelry traders have attached the term “topaz” to a variety of stones such as: “Smoky Topaz” which is the Smoky Quartz; “Citrine Topaz”, “Bohemian Topaz” and “Occidental Topaz” are all names for Citrine; “Oriental Topaz” for Yellow Corundum; Genuine Topaz are modified with prefixes “Precious” and “Imperial” and Imperial Topaz is reserved for fine, warm golden-brown stones from Brazil.

Name:

According to Pliny the Elder, Topaz comes from the word “Topazious” meaning “to guess”, since often shrouded in fog. Topazious is an island in the Red Sea, which was also the location of the ancient Peridot mines.

It is also possible the word Topaz comes from Sanskrit word “Topas” meaning, “fire”, an appropriate reference as many early writers were only familiar with the yellow to orange colored stones.

Scientific Properties:

Colors: blue, clear, green, orange, red and yellow
Hardness: 8
Crystal System: Orthorhombic, prism with multi-faceted ends, often 8 sided in cross section
Chemistry: A1 2(SiO4) (F, OH) 2, Fluoride containing aluminum silicate
Fluorescence: weak; unusable; natural black; red-reddish
Location: Brazil, Mexico, Russia, USA: San Diego, Utah
Uses: gemstones and optical properties are useful in industry.
Associated Minerals: include quartz, tourmalines, micas, brookite, cassiterite and fluorite.

History, Myth, Legend and Lore:

DEarly writers – mentions Topaz but do not list any virtue

Ancient Times – Topaz stones served as an amulet to ward off the evil eye. The stone was tied to the left arm to protect the owner from any curses as well as guarding against liver troubles.

Marbod, Bishop of Rennes, eleventh century – describes two varieties of gemstones most likely referring to citrine and Peridot: “One vies with purest gold or orange bright; The other glimmers with a fainter light”. He also lists the ability of the stone to cool boiling water and relieve hemorrhoids.

Late Authors of Lapidaries – concurs with the ability of the stone to cool boiling water

Early Christian Lore – the stone cures all eye troubles based on the writings of Andreas, Bishop of Caesarea, and tenth century

Andreas, Bishop of Caesarea, tenth century – one of the earliest writers to associate the Foundation Stones of Revelations with the twelve apostles. The Topaz that is of ruddy color resembling carbuncle stops milky fluid discharges caused when one suffers from these type of eye disease

Harriet Fobes – claims in her book St. Matthew himself was cured of eye disease by the use of a topaz stone

Saint Hildegarde, wife of Theodoric – claims the stone emitted such brilliant light in a darkened chapel. Recommends the stone as a cure for “dimness of vision” by placing the Topaz gem in wine for three days and three nights. Use wine by rubbing the eyes with before going to sleep so the liquid just touches the eye and using the wine as an eye wash for five days

Jean de Mandeville, Lapidaire of Chevalier, fourteenth century – restates the attributes listed by early writers and adds some not previously noted. He reiterates the misconceptions that topaz and Peridot are like stones

Rabbi Ragiel, Book of Wings, and thirteenth century – the figure of a falcon on topaz helps to acquire good will of kings

African Bushman – used in ceremonies for healing and contacting spirits

Naharare, Hindu Physician, and thirteenth century – (1) states Topaz is an appetizer of excellence – it tastes sour and cold (2) as a remedy for flatulence (3) any man wearing Topaz will have long life, beauty and intelligence

Roman Physician, fifteenth century – prescribed Topaz in his possession as a cure for Plague – he claimed prior owners: Pope Clement VI and Pope Gregory II – the stone was used to touch plague sores and it cured the disease

Modern Crystal Practitioners – Topas is a “stone of true love and success in all endeavors”. The gem was used to relieve insomnia, nightmares, fears and anxiety. Healing properties – used as a treatment for loss of sense of taste and in healing wounds and skin eruptions. It was recommended that Topaz be used with Amethyst to provide soothing and stabilizing effect to white magic and healing procedures
