ThanksGiving
Thanks for Giving Us Another Chance~Again

When we were young and in elementary school, we were taught a lot of history that later turned out to be fairy tales. It still rings true today that the winners wrote the history books. In fact that juvenile tale we were told about Thanksgiving was a lie. So with this being the month that we celebrate Thanksgiving I wanted to revisit and re-do history so that we can know the truth and then REALLY be thankful. In the second half of my thoughts, I want to talk about saying thank you in business.
I was given the picture that Thanksgiving was a wonderful time when all of the pilgrims and Native Americans, clean and shining, sat around the table of bountiful blessings singing kumbaya and passing the gravy. They ate, drank and were merry. Well that image was quickly ripped from my imagination, when one evening I happened to be watching the History channel. Evidently the pilgrims, who landed on already inhabited terra firma, created a disaster for the residing natives. As their first footprints touched North America, life as the locals knew it, would never be the same.
As an example, because I don’t want to get into all of the horrifying details, once landing, in desperation, with no plan, these Christian pilgrims ransacked the summer villages left behind by the migrating natives.’ They dug up and ate the buried seeds that were to be retrieved in the spring for planting. They also desecrated sacred burial grounds, leaving remains scattered about with no respect given.
Upon return in the spring, many natives, finding their stored food supply empted, knew they would be starving in the coming year. Seeing the remains of their ancestors, from generations back, tossed around with no value, would leave a deep scar in their minds that would not soon be forgotten. Also, the pilgrims introduced the locals to diseases that their bodies had no resistance to. So if the Indians didn’t die from starvation they died from disease. Wow! I bet they said thanks to that huh?
So when I think of Thanksgiving it’s more about the redo and redemption of actions unspeakable as we evolve into a more civilized and educated culture. I am thankful for the knowledge of the real history so that I will speak up when ever I see injustice happening again. Learning to show Grace and compassion where there was none in the past is what we can be thankful for… at least in the USA. We need to know the Truth to rebuild the paradigm and re-calculate with wisdom and choices another chance to be more mindful of our actions.
Somehow some Europeans and some Native Americans were able to coincide and create space for both. And I suspect the offspring of the early Pilgrims were the ones to make the real peace and learn to do no harm once the bad choices of their elders had been painfully realized. I still have an idea that the Native Americans were the one’s to move over though.
Does any of this ring a bell with what we’re doing in the world today? We keep letting the same Christian pilgrims do the same thing? Imperial take over is marketed as Christian democracy? How greed and no plan causes such needless affliction to us, others, and well…The Earth! Ok~ I certainly won’t go into this because I start foaming at the mouth but I am so astonished that we keep making the same missteps especially after we can look back and see the pattern of history. The fear-based are still pandering to the belief that war is economy. What about Peace making a great economy? As much as rape and pillage gives people a quick rush there are many of us now that want to experience the slow burn of Peace. It’s ok to feel Peaceful~ we don’t have to be adrenaline junkies anymore.
For some reason and for some blessing, we keep being given the opportunity to try to do it over until we learn not to harm. As a hopeful optimist I believe there are enough of us that will keep talking about intentional actions as opposed to just sleep walking off of the cliff like lemmings corralled by the fence of fear. And for the freedom to say my peace~ I am thankful.
When we celebrate the modern thanksgiving let it be a reminder to look back on how far we have come. We can do different. The younger one’s that are here now are learning from our missteps. There is a strong underlying wave of youth taking charge of the world and of us, their elders. I feel confident that we can let go and rest in their strength and their want for Peace. We didn’t raise no dummys~tatoos and all. The majority of these young ones are the new tribe, the Cosmic People, homo altus, that I spoke about in my last column. So let’s join with them and get it right!
ThanksGiving in the Business World
Being thankful and mindful in business can be practiced in our jobs and place of business. The simplest thing that we can do is remember the word thank you. Thank you again for giving us the chance to understand the term opps! And change course. Anytime anyone makes the gesture to give to you, ALWAYS say thank you. Whatever the magnitude of the gift. It could be a simple phone call or a quick note. It also keeps the flow going in your direction to recognize others with gratitude.
If some kind of reciprocal thank you is not extended, you have interrupted the flow. When you give to another it is nice to hear a thank you because whatever kindness you have extended was given freely and will infinity continue. If a thank you is not acknowledged you are less likely to give to that person again, it feels like they are not really interested.
As a Mentor, I always make sure I am asked for my help. It’s human nature to not continue giving my energy, with no reciprocation, to a black hole. In the business arena, when I choose to mentor someone, I learn a lot about the student quickly. Is this person half-full or half-empty? I will not work with someone that is half empty. Every once in awhile I have misread the motives of a student, and very quickly see their behavior as a taker in the first few conversations. Our relationship rapidly moves from Mentor-mentee, to an hourly charge for business consultation.
If they show up to you with a positive gesture such as flowers, or offer skills, such as being computer savvy, then you have a giver and it is comfortable to continue the business relationship. When you have people in your life that are grateful it is a blessing.
I move people out of my life that can’t or are not working on “thank you.” A closed fist that grasps at whatever comes in that direction CANNOT last long in any business. A closed fist also cannot receive. It is expected that if you get- you give back. It is called Networking.
I have a doctor friend who refers a client to me from his practice, about three or four times a year. When he calls to buy a certificate for his wife’s birthday you better believe that I will extend a courtesy session to him. The cost of this one-hour session is worth about three times its face value when he sends me new clients. I am also continually thanking my clients for their patronage. I have very loyal clients, even if their income suffers due to a job loss, they may cut back their number of session but not leave. When their income returns, they reschedule their maintenance sessions.
Saying thank you to yourself is an absolute, this craft of developing healthy relationships is hard work. Most of us are constantly learning and shifting into healthier, stronger people as we muster up the courage to let go of old stuff and people with toxic behaviors. It takes a lot of constant effort but way worth it!
THANK YOU!
