Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
Still Standing
|

When I think back to my youth, there are songs that stand out almost as anthems of my generation. I do not fall into the baby boomers nor the various lettered age groups. I seem to be amongst a small group of people born into strange times. We were too late to be hippies and too early to get in on the technical revolution. We were left to make our way in the wilderness, so-to-speak. No doubt, some of you are either with me in this or you may not fit in with your own “generation”. Some of us, no matter how hard we try, never seem to fit into any classification or mold. This month we are going to talk about us.
Gloria Gaynor sang “I Will Survive” and how many of us belted out the lyrics with her as the song played on the radio. Then, a few years later, Elton John gave us “I’m Still Standing” to further our unique mentality. Our card this month is the Three of Wands from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see a wand standing at the edge of the water. Before it are two other wands who did not survive the journey. For many of us, the songs and this card speak a special secret. Many reading this article have lived through many challenges. No matter what we do, life continually throws at us curve balls. We have read all of the articles that say if you think positively, life will give you blessings. We have watched the speakers tout the joys of creating the life that we want. We have tried to live our lives well and not hurt others in our journey. Still, for some reason, we are the group that seems to have lightening rods attached to our heads. No matter what we do or how we do it, the darkness always finds us.

Let us look at our card. It is really a beautiful scene if we can ignore those fallen wands. Knowing us, we will try to help those wands. We are the group that stops by the wayside and takes on the burdens of the wounded. These wands are beyond help, but still we will see if there is anything that we might do. So, there we stand; a lone wand. We are still standing. Before us is another river to cross. Beyond our reach is the promised blessing for which we have waited. Will this be the time that we get it in our grasp?
In the traditional Three of Wands, we see someone standing amongst three wands, watching the horizon. Three ships may be passing by as he looks for his ship to come in. We never do find out if it ever does arrive, there is simply the promise that it will. In many tarot readings, the Three of Wands depicts our rewards just over the horizon. They are coming. That is what we are told. They are coming. Do you ever wonder when? I know that I am not the most patient person in the world. However, those of us who lack patience seem to get to practice it the most.
Let us return to our Ethyrial Three of Wands. Rather than focus on the wands that have fallen before us, we are looking at the wand still standing. Consider for a moment what must have transpired in order for two wands to have fallen before. We have seen the movies where the hero walks down a dark cavern and finds the remains of those who failed in what he is now attempting. There is a strong urge to turn around and run back the way we came. Does our hero ever take that route? Neither do we, so it seems. No matter what life throws at us, we keep going. No matter how many times we are knocked down, we stand up. We stand between generations of people. Some have not had to struggle for anything. Some know nothing else and give up. Thus, it falls upon us to stand as an example.
We always ask “why”. Rarely do we get a suitable answer. I do not have one for us either. However, I would like to believe that we are the mapmakers. In days of old, when countries were unexplored, someone had to blaze the trail. Someone had to go out before everyone else, risking life and limb, to find a way through to the other side; most never reaped the rewards of their endeavors. Regardless, they did not give up and they did not cease their forward motion. In spite of the dangers and the pain, these souls moved on. There were many casualties along the way. No doubt, some did turn back. Who would blame them? Some, however, just could not quit until they found out what was on the other side.
Our Three of Wands depicts this very spirit. This card is for those of us who are still standing, despite the many Tower moments that plague our lives. We are still standing. Will the next step bring us to that moment for which we have been searching? We do not know, yet still we move forward. If we find that it still eludes us, we will continue even further forward. That is our nature. We are the spiritual trailblazers. Sometimes what we see is mocked by those who merely sit by the wayside, telling stories of the unexplored territory. Occasionally, we are shown some bit of kindness along the way, usually by others of our kind who are too wounded to go on. Even if no one ever gave us that cup of kindness, we would still keep going. We can do nothing else. No matter what the universe throws our way, we are the ones who keep moving forward. This does not mean that we do not, on occasion, need time to rest and to lick our wounds. We are not superhuman, after all. We are persistent.
There is a curiosity to the Three of Wands. There is an optimistic feel to the card, in spite of the fallen wands. If we have come this far, where others have not survived, surely we can go even further. Wands are a symbol of the spirit. Fire is the element. Within us burns a fire that cannot be extinguished. No matter what others might do to us, we know that we need to get beyond it. Something does loom on the horizon. Inside we know it. We feel it.
There is no doubt that another knockdown is potentially awaiting us. Knowing this, we still prepare for the next leg of the journey. For all of my Three of Wands compatriots, know that you are not alone. We are out here. For some reason, we seem to walk our paths in parallel but not in unison. There are many paths to the same destination, whatever that destination might be. Being the trailblazers that we are, we will not often cross paths. Nevertheless, it helps to know that someone else somewhere understands.
For the month of September, let the Three of Wands remind you that there is something just over the horizon. We know that we will be the ones to reach it, for we do not give up. And, at the end of the journey, we will be the ones still standing.

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
