Spiritual Self-Healing
Comes of Age
by Lonny Brown, HHc. |

One revolutionary new idea in twenty-first century Western medicine is called voluntary control, or "auto-regulation." This is the learned, mind-based intentional influencing of metabolic systems for healing and optimal functioning. The recognition of such possibilities coincides with leading-edge science revealing the sophisticated, two-way communications between the brain and cells throughout the body. An example of practical applications of this discovery: relaxation and guided imagery to boost the immune system. Many more therapeutic applications are emerging.
Cellular Intelligence: Feel It in Your Bones
Long known in the East, such self-conscious functioning is only now beginning to enter mainstream American health care. Microbiologists know that the cells in our bodies constantly make intelligent, discriminating choices about internal events requirements, such as temperature, nutrient, and defense measures. It's as if each cell is a live organism - a sentient being - incredibly efficient at its job mainly because it literally knows what to do. It communicates constantly with its local community, overall environment, and yes, its human host.
Cell Phones
Living cells are remarkably “smart.” For example, if a minute sample of human heart tissue is isolated from its host, it will continue beating. Incredibly, when placed alongside another sample beating at a different rate, the two will soon synchronize. Does this prove that telepathic communication exists among cells?
Such communication also occurs between the individual cells and the organism as a whole. Polygraphy expert Cleve Backster, author of The Secret Life of Plants, demonstrated that human sperm in a test tube will react vigorously to the donor forty feet away, through three closed doors, when he inhales stimulating amyl-nitrite fumes.
Yogis have long demonstrated voluntary controls over organ function, skin temperature, even tissue repair rates. They do it by "putting their mind to it." They also say anyone can do it.
Good Contacts
Most of the time we're blissfully unaware of our digestive track, glandular activity, and circulation. Internal body sensation most often comes as the result of distress and dysfunction, such as indigestion. We're not accustomed to tuning in to the pleasant feelings that can arise from healthy, balanced metabolism, good digestion and optimal circulation. Yet, because these functions are carried out by the live, sentient cells with which we are in constant, direct neuro-chemo-electric contact, the processes of metabolism and energy transformation that happens in the intestines, lungs, and nerves are potentially available to conscious awareness.
Though such “somasthetic" awareness is usually dormant, experiencing it is merely a matter of training and practice. Typical methods employed to develop internal awareness and voluntary controls include meditation, visualization and guided imagery, hypnosis, psycho-tropic drugs, fasting, and most recently, biofeedback.
Total Recall
Of course it is a great convenience not to have to attend to the complex processes of digestion and other metabolic functions all the time. Such a primal preoccupation would leave us little attention for our more interesting pursuits. To "rise above" cellular consciousness, we have evolved the self-regulating Autonomic Nervous System, and literally put it on automatic. This enabled us to develop higher intelligence (as individual humans), socialization (as families, communities, etc.), and eventual spiritualization (as conscious human "cells" in the living planetary body.)
Mind Over Whatever's the Matter
Evolutionarily, as well as during gestation, and - it now becomes evident - functionally, the whole body is an extension of the brain. This means we can become consciously aware of any place within us. The ability to "get in touch" like this is a great boon for purposes of de-stressing, self-healing and disease prevention. With the necessary re-education of their senses practitioners can focus consciousness back down into the cellular level. Researchers in psychoneuroimmunology have demonstrated that once a cancer patient can sufficiently concentrate on her own white blood cells, she can successfully influence them to produce better immune responses. Migraine patients who learn with biofeedback to lower their hand temperature by a few degrees can effectively abort the headache at onset. Significantly, it is only by warming the hand from within, with the mind, that the method reduces the head pain; soaking the subjects' hands in hot water has no such effect.
