Divination Systems: Be Your Oracle

It's All About Cards

by James Wanless, Ph.D

It seems as though every week a new deck of cards is published. New decks arrange from Alex Grey's spectacular Sacred Mirror Deck to Reiki Techniques Cards to Caroline Myss' Healing Cards and on and on. Why, why, why?

Because it's the media that has the right message for our intuitive age. It is how we receive, process and transmit information that is the significant overriding and underlying communication and meaning. This brilliant insight, "the medium is the message," was coined by Marshall McLuhan in the 60's. This prophet of the electronic age stated that "we become what we behold."

Now, in the 21st century that we are well steeped in the age of electronic media, what does this say about who we are in terms of our consciousness. How do we perceive now? How do we think, or not? What kind of "awareness beings" are we becoming?

With the beginning of the printing press that has now led into all the electronic mediums, we have become "infomaniacs," continuous processors of ideas, words, pictures, sounds.

This evolution of mediumship is taking us more and more into an intuitive way of being, though not without mixed results.

I've always been intrigued by digital books. The new Sony Reader is designed to do for the book what the iPod did for music. It's smaller and thinner than a paperback and can hold 80 average-length novels. Wow! That is the real upside of digi-books. You can become a virtual walking library.

But, but, but you can't scribble in the virtual margins, you can't drop it ((it costs $350). And a book never needs charging and it never crashes. And for me most importantly, you can scan a book. A book is intuitively navigable, and scrolling is not. (If I had to use a digital book to read (scan) the hundreds and hundreds of books required for my Ph.D., I never would have finished).

How about television... what a great thing! And yet, because it provides all the pictorials, what happens to our imagination? Books, audiobooks, radio, and podcasts give us words and we fill in the imagery with our own mind's eye projections – it's tell-your-own vision (be your own TV). One reason to throw away your TV is that it kills your third eye, wherein lies, along with intuition and emotion, our human genius. It is because of the human forebrain that we can foresee and forecast.

And compared to WWW (world wide web), TV is primitive, archaic and dictatorial – hardly intuitive! It's a box of canned pablum that force feeds your mind. Network equals knotwork, tying up your mind with somebody else's values and corporate point of view.

The internet is a technology that truly fosters intuition. Finding what you want on the web is an intuitive, sleuthing process. With the vast array of possibilities, choosing what information works for you is intuitive. Choices, choices, choices are inherently intuitive.

Intuition is personal, and so when you are in charge of what you want to listen to, read, and see at your time and at your place of preference, it's intuitive.

The internet has opened up the playing field of creativity! Now, anyone can have their own writing read by millions on blogs, have their own radio show through podcasts, and now create their own television stations (.tv). Creativity is intuition at play.

In this age of traditional rules and mores gone byebye, we have to "make it up." Why does the word, "innovation," have "in" in it? Because all creativity is "in"spired from with"in" through our "in"tuition.

About cell phones, wow, but do they ever diminish intuitive sensing! With a cell phone we can be up to date with the latest news and secure in our knowing. But we don't have to use our extra-sensory perception about what's going on. We lose trust in the unknown and uncertain, key ingredient of intuitive living.

I have a friend in Amsterdam misconnect with her sister before she left for home to Hungary. With no cell phone, what to do? She sensed that she would meet her sister at the airport, but the airport in Amsterdam is huge. Nevertheless, trusting her intuition, she took a train to the airport, got off the train, and ran immediately into her sister!

And cell phones, in addition to other great benefits, have increased communications and most likely develop relationship skills, which are empathically intuitive, so...

Indeed, the media we use does impact on our intuition. And that is why the tarot is such a great tool for developing intuitiveness. It is one of the ancient throwback mediums that has survived the electronic revolution because it's so classically intuitive!

Picking a facedown card is intuitive. Accepting the synchronicity of the moment is intuitive. Reading a card is intuitive, requiring the associative ability to intuitively think metaphorically and pictorially. To do the cards requires openness, flexibility, balance, perceptivity – all major qualities of intuitiveness.

It's no wonder in this intuitive age that tarot and the entire field of card oracles has skyrocketed. Inspite of the spate of tarot decks, Voyager continues to sell, even after 22 years of being on the market, because it is an extremely intuitive tarot, chock full of symbols that are multicultural, transpersonal, cross-racial, past, present and future, artifactual and natural, archetypal and idiosyncratic – all opening numerous, to say the least, intuitive interpretations. It has been calculated by one mathematician that just the 22 Voyager Major Arcana cards contain 1,124, 727, 000,777, 607, 680,000 possibilities, and this does not even account for the variety of individual subjective understandings of each image.

Want to develop your intuition? Pick a card.
