The Dog Days of Bush

by Nancy Sommers
The road is littered with the detritus of the Bush administration’s mistakes and misdeeds, and we have eighteen months of this travesty to go. Currently, it is as if several pots are on the stove, bubbling over and threatening to engulf the world’s kitchen with flames, and the president of the United States seems incoherent and paralyzed in response. The misbegotten surge has only increased the violence in Iraq, as the propped-up al Maliki government‘s stature diminishes daily. Afghanistan is trembling under the growing menace of the Taliban, while neighboring Pakistan rumbles with an Islamist rebellion and a possible civil war that General Pervez Musharraf is only belatedly attempting to crush. Turkey is threatening to invade Kurdish Iraq, and a chill wind is even blowing from Moscow with intimations of a return to Cold War attitudes. In the midst of this evolving chaos, the befuddled American Emperor vacantly smiles and says we’re making progress.

At the moment, George Bush is setting dubious records for his low approval ratings and working diligently toward the title of Worst President Ever. With the world in a growing state of volatility, it is reasonable to ask what the planets indicate for George Bush between now and the next presidential term. As might be expected, the duration of 2007 will see his popularity still in the nether regions, with his tertiary progressed Saturn in conjunction with his natal Venus (21Leo30), waxing through December 2007, and transiting Pluto currently quincunx his natal Saturn (26Cancer30) through early October 2007. The pitched battle between his administration and Congress over the reach of executive privilege, the attorney firings, perjury accusations, terrorist surveillance, etc. - a manifestation of transiting Uranus square Inaugural Mars - reached a peak by the first days of August and now will likely move to the background until the conflict erupts again in January and February 2008, when Uranus returns to square Inaugural Mars for the final time.

Unfortunately, Bush’s tendency to see the world as he wants it to be, through the rose-tinted lens of his neocon glasses, will completely obscure any rational thinking through October 2007, and to a lesser extent through the duration of his term. Recently, his jarring cheerfulness in the face of multiple abject failures and his self-aggrandizing fantasies of being lionized by history have been seen by others as increasingly disconnected from reality. With Bush’s progressed Moon square his natal Neptune from late September through October activating the peak month of the year-long solar arc progressed Ascendant conjunct Neptune, in addition to the transiting Jupiter square his natal Moon/Jupiter conjunction in October, we can expect Bush to be flying high during the next few months on grandiose delusions to which the rest of us who live in the reality-based world are not privy. It is noteworthy that this comes just after a likely US expansion of military activity in the second and third weeks of September (Jupiter conjunct US Ascendant), as well as during a time when violence is likely to escalate in both Iraq and Pakistan (see below). With transiting Neptune opposing Bush’s natal Venus and sesquiquadrate his natal Neptune picking up again in late December 2007 through February 2008, and again from September through mid-November 2008, future periods when the White House Wizard thinks he has turned noxious weeds into an apple orchard are likely. But the curtain will rapidly drop on his inner fairy tales as his presidency reaches its final days, due to the fading of Neptune’s hallucinatory impact in his chart by late November 2008 and the growth of Saturn’s painful, earth-bound lessons and disillusionment at that time.

As already mentioned, circumstances in Iraq are likely to explode into even greater mayhem and violence throughout the fall of 2007 with the Uranus station conjunct the Gulf War chart Ascendant (14Pisces41) and the Pluto/Mars opposition of late September sitting on the horizon line of the Fall Equinox chart when drawn for Baghdad. It seems probable the civil war will take a deeper hold leading to increasingly intense power struggles in the fall which will eventually overwhelm the situation with the coming of Pluto to the square of the Gulf War chart Sun (29Pisces04) in December 2007 through October 2008. Pakistan will also be impacted by the Uranus station in the last three months of 2007, during which Uranus will be in exact square to the 2007 Spring Equinox Ascendant drawn for Islamabad and suggesting increasing turmoil and rebellion in that nation.

This escalating volatility shows up in the Inaugural chart as well, as the Uranus station sits in semisquare to the Inaugural Sun (00Aquarius45) for the last four months of 2007, and will be particularly strong in September through the first week of October (when Bush’s self-delusion meter is off the charts) and in December 2007. Upsets, reversals, and unexpected events will impact Bush and his administration in rapid succession, and he will be more likely to take unilateral action during those times.

By the spring of 2008, significant change begins to take hold, and there are numerous portents of big events, upsets, and drama during the following 12 months. The various indicators can be found in the 2008 Spring Equinox chart drawn for Washington, in George Bush’s chart, and in the US chart. The culprit in all of these is, once again, Uranus, the planet of powerful, sudden transformations, upsets, and awakenings. The 2008 Spring Equinox chart has Uranus exactly square to the Ascendant in Washington, DC, an indication of sudden and disturbing events that will impact the US during the course of the year, in particular from September 22 , 2008, through January 3, 2009, when Uranus returns to an exact square with the Equinox Ascendant (19Sagittarius16) for an extended period. It should be noted that the 2001 Spring Equinox chart also had Uranus square the Ascendant in the chart drawn for Washington, DC, and not only was the US hit by the extreme violence of September 11th, but also, in late March, 2001, a US plane made an emergency landing in China after a mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter jet, causing a tense diplomatic situation for several days.

The increasing drama and likelihood of transformative events during 2008 is also indicated in the US chart, where Uranus will be square the US Mars from April 2008 through March 2009. Combined with the Uranus/Ascendant square in the Spring Equinox chart, this Uranus/Mars activity suggests the potential for both sudden attacks on US interests and precipitous and unilateral attacks by the US on its adversaries. Certainly, the level of agitation and the sense of confrontation will be greatly heightened.

In George Bush’s chart, we find the potential for upsetting and unexpected events during March and April 2008, when Uranus squares his natal Uranus/Node conjunction (19 -20 Gemini). The Saturn station in April and the first half of May 2008, semisquare Bush’s Moon, suggests he will be quite upset by these occurrences. Thereafter, however, as the newly intensified US aggression takes hold (Uranus square US Mars) and Jupiter stations quincunx US Mars in May and early June 2008, we will see the beginning of a significant shift in the US and Bush’s mood. In Bush’s chart, Saturn’s hold will dissipate after mid-May 2008, when it separates from a 6-week semisquare to Bush’s Moon, and his tertiary Saturn will also have increasingly separated from natal Venus over the four preceding months. Moreover, it is also at this point when the progressed Ascendant in the Gulf War chart begins to separate from its square to Saturn and progressed Saturn, and there is some potential for progress in Iraq from late May through October 2008. For the first time since the beginning of the Gulf War, Bush will be free of the pressure and burden of Saturn, while, simultaneously, the Gulf War chart also suggests some noteworthy forward movement. Furthermore, there is also a period of increasing American pride and success, specifically from August through early October 2008, as indicated by the strong Jupiter transit opposite the Sun in the US and Bush charts (13 Cancer) during that time. Thus, it is quite likely that increasing US military force and assertiveness, possibly triggered by sudden and upsetting events in March and/or April 2008, may bring about what seems to be a positive and successful outcome, especially in August, September, and early October 2008, when the Jupiter station is strongest.

Unfortunately, the mood of the Bush administration and the nation will sour significantly shortly after the November 2008 election, when it is likely that extremely stressful events hit the US between late November 2008 and mid-January 2009. As Uranus heads back to its final square with US Mars (21Gemini23) in late November, waxing in strength through mid-February 2009, sudden and dramatic circumstances are again indicated. But instead of the good fortune that Jupiter brought through the summer months of 2008, the final Uranus transit square to US Mars will be joined by the Saturn station also in square to US Mars from November 23, 2008 through January 20, 2009. This suggests that the general agitation and transformational events indicated by Uranus are likely to bring sorrow, stress, and extreme difficulty. Moreover, Uranus during this period will be stationary exactly square to the Spring Equinox Ascendant (19Sagittarius16) drawn for Washington, DC, which suggests that upsetting occurrences of significance will impact the nation, possibly on US soil (Ascendant). It should be noted that these events, whether they be terrorist-related, economic, military, natural disaster-related, or otherwise, are deeply problematic for the departing Commander-in-Chief, who will have Saturn stationary square to his Nodes (20Gemini35) during this same period. He will feel his goals thwarted and his fantasy of a heroic exit shrouded in difficulty and failure.

It is impossible to tell exactly what the circumstances at the end of Bush’s term in office will be, though it seems likely they will, to some extent at least, be intertwined with foreign policy. The 2008 Spring Equinox chart drawn for London (Ascendant 18Pisces38) suggests disturbances for Britain during the Uranus station in late November and December 2008. Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, will have the Saturn/Uranus opposition square his Venus (21Sagittarius22) during the same period, suggesting he will be under tremendous stress. General Musharraf of Pakistan will have the Saturn/Uranus opposition on his Venus (20Virgo10) as well. Thus, the tensions in the last weeks of 2008 and in early 2009 impact the leadership of several nations, although the most difficult configurations seem to be focused on the US. As always, Uranus will bring forth an awakening of some kind and a new awareness of a previously hidden truth. Saturn will bring forth lessons born of inattentiveness or lack of appropriate caution in some area. Together, they will usher in the next presidency in the United States, an administration that will indeed need to hit the ground running.
