Almanac of the Ancients:
September 2007

by Triple Moon Goddess
The month of September has arrived. The month of the dog days has ended and cooler weather is on the way. The Holly King’s arrival is another month closer, and we can start to feel him and the cooler air he brings. It is the month of the Autumnal equinox, or Mabon, one of the four lesser sabbats celebrated by the Pagans for thousands of years. This is the mid point of the harvest season (between Lammas and Samhain or Halloween). The children have returned to school in most places, and we ready ourselves for the turning of the great solar wheel to a new season. Even today when many of us no longer “harvest” the month of September puts us all into a different mind set, maybe even different clothes, depending on where we live. We start to act , think and feel differently. Our old souls start to celebrate the season !

“Septem” means seven, and September was the seventh month in the old Roman calendar. Some still consider it a “lucky month”, and I suppose it was lucky if you had a good harvest ! The Dutch called it Herstmaand (autumn month), and the Saxons called it the gerst-monath (barley month),or Haerfest-monath (harvest month). After the introduction of Christianity, the Saxons called it Halig-monath, or holy- month, because of the preponderance of feast days in at this stage of the year.

The traditional stone of September is blue sapphire and the flowers are aster and morning glory.

A maiden born when rustling leaves
Are blowing in the September breeze,
A Sapphire on her brow should bind,
‘Twill cure diseases of the mind.
Traditional English rhyme

This month shares the sun signs of Leo the lion and Virgo the Virgin, a fire sign and an earth sign. Plant some asters in your garden alongside their “sister mums” and enjoy the color while it is still available !

There were months and days sacred to deities all through the ancients calendars and this month honored Persephone (rebirth), Thor (thunder) and the Wiccan goddess in her role as the Mother.

The goddess Pomona was the “goddess of the month” however. She was the ancient Roman goddess of fruit and the orchards.

The full moon this month is the Harvest Moon on the 26th. The Pagans called it the Ivy Moon because ivy is a symbol of endurance. It is always green, and never drops its’ leaves !

This is a big month this year for celebrations. We have Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and the autumnal equinox. All are still celebrated to this day all over the world. The first two move from year to year, but this year they are celebrated in September. Let us jump in with the ancients, with our current world family, and with our friends and local family and celebrate the month of September together !

Fair weather first day of September, fair for the month.
English traditional saying

Sept 1-

Genesia- An ancient Greek holiday to remember the dead.

Yatzuo Kaze No Bon- The Japanese believed that evil spirits caused typhoons. So from Sept.1-3 people danced to appease the spirits. Today it is still celebrated more like a street fair.

Sept 2-

Celtic tree month of Muin (through the 29th). The Celts marked each month with a different tree during the year (13 lunar months) this month was Muin (vine) month. This tree is sacred to the god Lugh, who we read about last month during Lammas. The time now was still for actual harvest, but spiritual harvest also ! The muin was specifically a grape vine.

Ancient Greek Islands- Festival of the Grape Vines honoring Ariadnae and Dionysus. The ancient Greeks honored the grape vines during the same time as the Celts! Ariadne is a fertility goddess and Dionysus is the god of wine and ecstasy.

Marathonia- The ancient Greeks also celebrated the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC on this date. This is the day that the Athenians beat the Persian army.A Greek historian claimed tht the battle was so fierce that you could still hear the sounds of it 500 years after the event. Sounds like the Greek version of haunted Gettysburg !

Sept 3-

Last day of the Apache Sunrise Dance that began on Aug 31.

Sept 4-

Circensian Games- Ancient Rome-Lasted through the 19th. This even took place at Circus Maximus and honored Jupiter, Juno and Minerva. The games were held twice a year, in September and April and consisted of chariot races, wild animal hunts (lions and bulls mostly), public executions, and later on gladiator fights. The games were influenced by the Greeks, and they began with a grand procession.

Changing Woman Ceremony- Apache- This is a coming of age event celebrated by the Arizona Apache. The girl changes into the goddess Sprit Woman during the ceremony and blesses all those present.

Sept 5-

The Nones of September- Ancient Romans celebrated the 5th day of certain months, and this is one of them. The were 9 days before the ides (15th of the month). The eldest house member at sunrise will cleanse himself and say a prayer of ablution. He was not allowed sexual activity, or food prior to the ritual. He would wear a clean white toga and cover his head so that he would not see any “evil” prior to the rite. This was just the beginning of a long, and exact ritual. This ritual honored Lares and the moon goddess Iuno Covella.

Sept 6-

A similar ritual to honor the moon goddess was held by the Incans called Citua. The name of the moon goddess is Mama Quilla. There was a ritual cleansing followed by maize (corn) paste being smeared on their faces. Parents would eat a special cake containing the blood of their off spring !

In ancient Greece the sixth day of each month is sacred to Artemis.

Sept 7-

Slavic Pagans- The feast of Lada. This is to celebrate the work in the fields coming to an end for another year. There was dancing and singing as everyone said good by to summer. Lada is the goddess of harmony, beauty, love, youth and merriment. Lada lives in the underworld until the spring equinox.

Sept 9-

Double Ninth Festival- China-Dates back to before the East Han period of China. Also called the double Yang Festival. It is said to be a very unlucky day. To protect yourself you are to climb a high mountain, drink chrysanthemum wine and wear a zhuyu (flower) while doing all of this. I don’t know about you, but if I climbed a mountain and drank wine it would be a very unlucky day for me too! This began as a day to drive away danger , and became more of a fun festival in modern times.

Sept 10-

Navajo Sing Festival begins and lasts through the 18th, Changing Woman (known as Estsanatlehi) is honored in giving thanks for the harvest.

Sept 11-

Feast of Asclepigenia- The hey day of this festival was 430-485 CE. She was the daughter of Plutarch the Younger and inherited the runner of his school of philosophy which was based on Plato’s thinking. She used magic to change fate and was a student of metaphysics.

Sept 12-

Rosh Hashanah- Literally the “Head of the year” known as the Jewish New Year. There are 4 new year dates in the Jewish calendar, this one is for people, animals and contracts for business. This is a day when the shofar is blown and an accounting of the year is made. It is a day for self examination and repentance. Any person one feels they have wronged during the year must be approached and given an apology.

Goddess Day of Meng Jiangnu- The Pumpkin Girl- legend says she was made from two pumpkin vines. Her beloved died building the Great Wall of China. The Emperor married her and brought her on a trip over the sea. She jumped from the boat killing herself.

Sept 21-

Yom Kippur- Day of Atonement-A Jewish day of fasting and prayer.

Sept 23-

Autumnal Equinox / Mabon- One of the eight solar sabbats. The name Mabon for the Autumnal Equinox is recent (1970's), but the celebration is ancient. Today the sun is directly over the equator. The days will now become shorter as winter approaches. This was a time for giving thanks for the harvest, and preparing for the winter months ahead. It falls between Lammas and Samhain as I mentioned at the beginning of this article. It is time to store food for the coming winter.

Sept 24-

Day of Obatala-West Africa (Santeria/Orisha)- He was King of the Whole Cloth and said to be the first potter . He is the father of all other Orishas (gods). He owns the world and brings about peace and harmony.
