Astrologer's Notes:

Continuing the 2008 Presidential

by Basil Fearrington
This is continued coverage of the 2008 presidential campaign as seen through the eyes of astrology

Okay, I admit it. I am fairly fascinated with this presidential campaign of 2008 because as an astrologer it’s both fun and instructional.

This essay is being written early in March and it would not at all be surprising if Hillary Clinton is out of the running by the time this is published in April. It would be more surprising if Obama is out of it but in all probability the race will still be in question, at least in the early part of April prior to the Pennsylvania Primary. That is unless Obama takes Pennsylvania.

The initial wave of support for Barack Obama can be described almost as “viral,” like a virus that many people have caught. He is getting endorsement after endorsement (the most noted coming from Ted and Caroline Kennedy) and has gained in Super Delegates while Clinton, though she still has the Super Delegate lead, has also lost some of them due to switched allegiances. It has been an enormous, even cult-like show of support for Obama.

Before the campaign actually started, it was thought that the Clinton race to become the nominee would be a walk in the park but she now finds herself going uphill and has resorted to some of the tactics that she has accused Republicans of in the past.

Making the Prediction

Any astrologer who makes a political prediction in print is dealing in risky business. This is especially the case when it comes to the Clinton-Obama race because we do not have confirmed, timed birth information on him. I have thrice- in-print written that the measurements in Hillary Clinton’s horoscope suggest that she will be the next president. These predictions are based upon the super fortunate pairing of transiting and Solar Arc (SA) Jupiter squaring her Sun around election time. The arc is approaching right now. This is about as good as you can get for someone running for the top spot in the country. As well, she has transiting Saturn racing towards her Midheaven, which suggests a peak in career development but can also be an indication of a downfall, especially with transiting Neptune squaring her Ascendant all year. Her nomination is far from being a done deal at this point in time.

For those who are reading this and do not keep up with politics, it is important, as an astrologer, to know what’s going on procedurally with this particular election because it is far, far from the norm.

There are several Primary and Caucus elections. Delegates are earned at each election whether you win or lose. For the Democrats, the first candidate to get 2024 delegates becomes the nominee. We already know that neither candidate will get 2024 delegates because there are not enough left subtracted from those who have already voted.

This introduces the concept of Super Delegates who oversee various factors and eventually “select” a nominee. It doesn’t sound like a very democratic process but it is the law. Right now, Hillary Clinton has the lead in Super Delegates while Obama has the popularity and delegate lead.

Obama has been the more popular of the two. However, the Clinton camp asserts that Hillary has won the elections in the states that are necessary to win, such as California, Texas, and Ohio (which may not mean anything because California and New York are likely to vote Democrat regardless of who it is). If there is a re-vote for Florida and Michigan, the advantage is likely to go to Clinton. All of this is factored into the decision for the nominee as made by the Super Delegates. This means that, while Clinton has lost many more states, she is not yet out of it.

For awhile there, especially in February, it seemed certain that Hillary Clinton had no chance, no shot at all to become the nominee. While she was in the midst of what seemed like a slaughter, I started to reflect on the astrology because she has all the factors there suggesting victory.

I started to think, “Perhaps the transit of Neptune square her Ascendant, with its typical symbolism of loss, uncertainty and confusion, was stronger than I expected. Neptune’s conjunction or square to the Angles by transit or arc typically represents a time of bewilderment and even loss. In connection with the Ascendant, there is a suggestion that what one hopes to project or what one is projecting is other than it seems. There can be a difficulty projecting the real person, a continual problem for Hillary (and anyone else with an unaspected Sun). I had initially thought that this would be offset by the super fortunate double Jupiter contacts and that the Neptune factor symbolized a personal matter to be offset by the Jupiter factor. There most certainly has been confusion and backbiting within the Clinton campaign staff. There now even seems to be a sense of desperation. And here lately, they have even resorted to making an offer of the vice-presidency to Obama even though Obama is winning the campaign (and even though she asserts that he doesn’t have what it takes to be Commander-in-Chief; it is confusing on her part because the vice president is next in importance in the decision making process).

Along with 11 straight victories by Obama, I started to have severe questions about my prediction. This insecurity made me go back in the past and check a previous campaign.

The 2004 Democratic Campaign

If we go back to the campaign of 2004 when Kerry and Dean were the Democratic frontrunners, we find something quite interesting. Howard Dean (November 17, 1948; 7:21 PM EST, New York, NY.) had Jupiter transiting square his Sun all year (great times of opportunity for a person deserving it), ending with transiting Jupiter square his Moon (feeling emotionally uplifted; happiness). As well, transiting Jupiter conjoined his Sun/Moon midpoint (relationship fulfillment; getting along well with others personally and professionally). His campaign seemed to embody all of this until one enthusiastic yelp to a crowd ended everything.

John Kerry (December 11, 1943; 8:03 AM MWT; Denver, Co.) had transiting Pluto conjunct his Sun (sweeping changes in life), a Saturn Return (tremendous structural change potential); and the Lunation Full Moon (full illumination of what one is). As well, transiting Jupiter squared his Sun and Moon at the end of that year. These were strong, strong measurements, much stronger than was the case with Howard Dean so it is easy to see Kerry’s victory over Dean in these symbolisms.

Using that campaign as an example, we are at an astrological disadvantage in the Clinton/Obama campaign because we do not have confirmed birth data for Obama. So, what I did was look backwards in Hillary’s life to see how astrological symbolisms reflected her life at other times of victory.

In 2000 when Hillary became the Senator of New York, SA Neptune was square her Midheaven! Along with the Neptune measurement was transiting Saturn crossing the Descendant, transiting Jupiter square her Midheaven and opposed the Sun and Ascendant. This is essentially the same setup that she has now in 2008 – heightened Jupiter and Neptune activity. SA Neptune=MC is typically a time of confusion and uncertainty within the career, yet she became Senator. This leads you to believe that she vibrates well to the Neptunian influence, which is why I bypassed the transit square to her Ascendant all this year.

The Importance of Context

Regardless of what’s seen astrologically, the symbols have to be placed into the reality of circumstances as they are. The candidates and the measurements have to be placed in the context of reality.

At this point in time many Americans, regardless of Party loyalty, are exceptionally tired of Washington politics and that which has been set in place by the Bush-Cheney-Libby-Rumsfeld-Rove-Rice-Wolfowitz team that comprised the Bush administration. Beginning with the Supreme Court-controlled election of 2000 through the questions about the war in Iraq, the scandals in the Bush administration, and the abysmal state of the economy now, Washington has left a bad taste in the mouths of many and we can see this in the tsunami-like support of Obama, especially amongst the youth. There are even Republicans supporting him. Obama has been speaking in stadiums like a rock group does. These are indications of the strong desire to usurp what has been for what can be. Obama, by far, appears to be as far from the typical politician as we have seen in some time and his message of change and hope is well-echoed in his horoscope in the near exact opposition of Jupiter to Mercury; and in Nep=Sun/Mer (whereas Hillary has the more Machiavellian exact square of Saturn to Mercury). And who knows, maybe his confirmed birth data reveals something spectacular like SA Sun=MC, a symbolism that would allow us to see his present reality through an astrological lens because what has been happening certainly reflects such a measurement.

The Dream Ticket

With measurements as strong as transiting and SA Jupiter square Sun, and with all of the effort and ambition, how can Hillary Clinton not be rewarded? How can the period pass with a loss, with no gain whatsoever? If she goes back to being the New York state Senator, it would be a letdown. We must look ahead to the transit of Saturn conjoining her Midheaven in July as being pivotal.

The possibility is that Hillary makes it to the White House but perhaps not as the president? That is hard to imagine right now with her posturing about offering Obama the position, as if she is winning. Until we get a confirmed horoscope for Barack Obama, we cannot really be certain. Clinton has been losing thus far and it’s clear that whatever Obama’s birth time is, there must certainly be measurements fantastico to symbolize what has happened thus far. Regardless of what happens in 2008, Obama has a serious future in politics.

Stay tuned!
