Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot

Burning Bridges

by Gigi Miner
Here we are in April. It’s my birthday. I am not old, but I am not that young anymore either. In fact, parts of me are far older than my body and other parts much younger. As an Aries sun sign, I have had my fair share of lessons learned via experience. Experience is an eager teacher. In fact, it can be down right mean at times.

Our card this month is the Seven of Swords from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see a bridge, flames blocking the way. Most of the swords are amidst the chaos. A couple of swords are standing outside, seemingly watching. A trail of fire moves off the card in our direction. Many of us have likely heard the wise words about not burning bridges behind us. The idea is that if we block that path, we cannot return down it if we one day need to do so. This is good counsel most of the time. Given that we are looking at swords, we can assume that communication is involved. Our words are well known for being the culprits of said burned bridges.

As one who seems to enjoy playing the devil’s advocate, you know that I have to explore this from the alternative perspective. I believe that there are times in one’s life when burning a bridge here or there is actually a good thing. Let’s think about it for a moment. What does the burning bridge idea portray? Ultimately, it tells us that we have cut off a piece of our life by removing the path down which we might return. If you have left behind something needed or useful, this is a bad thing. However, what if that path leads to something that is a constant source of difficulties in your life? Then, might you not want to build a giant wall and assure that the monster that chases you is not able to get to you in your new location?

So many times we think of things in black and white. Life is full of color and shades of grey. Some of us are color blind and miss certain aspects. Others of us are so focused on what we are leaving behind that we fail to see where we are going. Removing something from your life that takes away from your progress is actually a good thing. Our bridge is an image representing a place in our lives where we might be tempted to return to an old way of life. Maybe an abusive relationship draws us to return over and over. Perhaps alcohol helps to drown our sorrows. Maybe you just cannot let go of some hurt from the past. The possibilities are as many as the people looking down the bridge. Each of us has something in our lives or from our past that haunts us. We all have experienced at some point a something that draws us back to a place we do not want to go.

What if you could be certain that your pursuer would no longer be able to track you down and lure you back? Would you consider doing what needed to be done? We have to face the fact that sometimes we do not want to let go of such things. They have their allure, regardless of how much agony they bring with them. Still, getting older has taught me that sometimes there are some things that we just need to let go of if we are to progress further in our lives. The hardest thing to do is to recognize what needs to be left behind and what you should take with you on the journey.

Swords are known for involving communication as well as stress. This is no easy task. Setting ablaze the pathway backwards is terrifying. We are creatures that like familiarity. Even if what is familiar is painful, it is still something you know rather than that horrifying unknown thing that follows us in our nightmares. The key here is to learn to communicate with yourself well enough to understand who you are and what makes you do what you do. I think I mentioned that this is not an easy thing. Inner growth is never the simple thing portrayed by some individuals. It is like giving birth and amputation at the same time. We are removing a part of ourselves in order to make room for something new. Neither process is painless. In fact, both are agonizing. Still, life is born of pain. If we can learn the lessons, then that pain can be replaced by joy and peace. We must be willing to burn a few bridges if we are to make our way forward and not be tempted to look back.

I can feel some of you balking at this. It is contrary to our teachings and nature to set fire to that retreat-way. What if we get down the path and discover that it is too difficult? We cannot go home if we burn that bridge. We cannot return to familiar territory if we cut off the escape route. That is exactly the point. On occasion we have to sacrifice our own comfort in order to move forward into something better. Of course, I do not recommend starting that fire until you have fully explored the idea. This is a “no turning back” moment and is not to be taken lightly. Our Seven of Swords is letting us know that we may be at a life-changing moment. This could be something major and we should spend some time examining it and meditating on the issue. Once we have done all the thinking and crying and wondering and researching, then it is time for us to make a decision. Do we cross the bridge in the first place? Once across, can we continue down that path without looking back or being pursued by something from our past?

If we find that we know we are heading in the direction that is best for us, then we are given the opportunity to cut off the way backwards. And, yes, this can be an opportunity. We have spent time with our swords thinking about our situation. The stress has taken its toll. In fact, if we look at the card closely, we might be able to say that we not only set the bridge afire, but we also walked through the fire and came out the other side. Fire is often considered a cleansing element. When gold is purified, it is heated in the fire until all of the dross is able to be skimmed off the top. The only way to get pure gold is to put it in the fire. Sometimes in our lives, the only way to purify ourselves is to walk through that fire. The pain will burn away the unwanted things in our lives. Then, when we walk out the other side, we are a new being. We are more valuable now that we have survived that trial.

We also want to remember that swords are weapons. The swords in our card look as if they have been through a battle. In any battle, some warriors survive and some perish. Consider that you are made up of many warriors. Some parts of you will die in the flames as a result of the battle. However, those parts of you that survive will be stronger than ever before and will serve you better in the future because of the experiences.

April is here. Spring is the essence of new beginnings. Aries is the first sign in the zodiac because it is willing to forge ahead and take life as it comes. Our Seven of Swords reminds us that life is not always an easy thing. There will be times when we are called to make a life-changing decision. Do we leave the path open or do we burn that bridge? Only you can know what is right for you and your path. However, do not be too quick to dismiss the possibility that an occasional bridge needs to be burned in order to set you free from your past. Whatever your monster, if you deny it the way by which to find you, your life can be filled with more peace.

No one ever promised us it would be easy. The way we live our lives is what makes the difference. We can take control of it and decide what to do with the bridges in our lives. If no one ever told you that you can choose, hear me now; you are the author of your life. There will be surprises and there will be things that feel completely out of your control. They key is to take control of the things that you can and allow the lessons to be embraced. Each time we fall down is an opportunity for us to get back up. Each bridge we cross is a chance for us to leave something behind if we so choose. It is up to you. Happy burning.

“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.

Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.

Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.

Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
