Energy Matters
Ever since the brilliant visionary physicist Albert Einstein announced to an incredulous world in the early nineteen hundreds that matter and energy are one and the same, and likewise that space and time are unified, modern science has been on an extended binge of astounding counter-intuitive discoveries about the forces of nature.
Existence - creation, the universe - turns out to be much more bizarre than we thought, or could even imagine. The awe inspired in physicists by the revelations of Relativity, deep space cosmology and sub-atomic quantum mechanics, is indistinguishable from the profound respect for the cosmos extolled by mystics and poets of all ages.
The Wavicle Paradox
One of the best examples of the "impossibility of reality" is the awkward fact that light is both a spread-out wave and a point-specific particle, the crucial difference being how one observes it. This is a paradigm-shattering blow to "objective" science. Uncertainty has invaded the very discipline founded on predictable results, and suddenly the old unacknowledged spook of the physical sciences - consciousness - jumps to the top of the list of experimental determinants. Might the long-elusive Holy Grail of physics - the Grand Unification Theory - prove mind to be the crucial missing connector among matter, energy, space and time? Yes, of course, say the great sages, who experience everything as in the mind of God.
Simultaneous Location
A similar confounding of common sense comes from recent experiments in quantum tunneling, whereby one particle appears in two places at once, or when one particle uncannily behaves exactly like a distant twin with no time delay. There are no "logical" explanations for these nevertheless predictable scientific "miracles," yet to spiritual scientists - meditation masters, for example - they make perfect sense, because they experience All as One. This is the single most persistent revelation throughout the history of religious thought and across all wisdom traditions.
Cosmic Break Down
In an ultimate cosmic conundrum, the laws that govern our universe predict places within said universe where those same fundamental laws completely fail, including those of matter, light, space and time.
We're talking of course about black holes, the eerie existence of which was mathematically postulated decades before their recent discovery using our most sensitive energy-sensing technologies and the most advanced computer processing.
Not even light can escape a black hole, yet it has no "inside" because it is a singularity "where" there is no space, and "when" time stands still. In other words, black holes lead to other dimensions.
Quite absurd, but now we know that such "anomalies'" actually reside at the center of most if not all galaxies, requiring an overhaul of our understandings about how they formed soon after the Big Bang, some thirteen billion years ago. Theoretical physicists have even postulated the existence of micro black holes all around us, undetectable by any known means. Outer space is both more far out than we thought, and closer than we know.
The Dark Side
Astronomers have concluded that 80% of the mass of our universe is completely invisible. We deduce the existence of this "Dark Matter" from observed gravitational effects on light from huge galactic clusters, the largest visible structures in the universe. Likewise, some kind of unknown Dark Energy that opposes gravity accounts for the known accelerating expansion of space itself. As ever, the more we observe our universe, the more mysterious it becomes. |
