Creating Bridges: The Spiritual & Philosophical
Teachings from the Western Mystery Traditions:
The Esoteric "Paths of Return"

The Second Initiation:
Healing Our Emotional/Relational Nature

by Jacquelyn Small
The second initiation forms the crisis in the control and balancing of our emotional life, all the ways we become reactive in our feeling nature in relation to others and to our life situations. This is known in metaphysics as "the astral plane." This next station along our inner path is where we must be trained to remember that we are not our feelings -- that the glamours of our moods and feelings overriding our deepest wisdom take us off the mark. You've no doubt noticed how painful it is to be around someone who is the victim of their emotional swings, outbursts, or whatever else their feeling state may be telling them is "true." There can be no reasoning with one who is in an overwrought emotional state. Unbridled emotions block our power to reason and to see reality.

The first Initiation is our entrance upon the spiritual path, where we realize we ground ourselves physically in the human condition as a spiritual being, knowing we have a sacred purpose for being here in this world.. You who are reading this are already a First Degree Initiate, or you wouldn’t even be attracted to this kind of reading.

As you undergo the Second Initiation, you’ll pass through the trials that enable your emotions to become purified and limpid, no longer your "god." In Christ's life this was his Baptism. It’s the seat of consciousness where we feel that which our soul truly longs for, and we yearn to serve here in compassion and true love. Our emotional "body" is the source of the creative power that drives us to express as human beings and to make life passionate and relational. At this initiatory level, we'll be met with the tests in life that teach us the difference between emotionalism and our true creative urges. We'll learn how our shadowy feeling states can act out and carry us off-key in our relating. When our emotional "body" is imbalanced, we are driven by our moods and overreactions. We look out and see just what we want when we want it, and believe these needy feelings are the absolute truth.

Addiction to imbalanced emotional states and relational needs are the bedrock of co-dependence, the relationship addiction, or can even lead to sex addiction, or the need to obsessively drink or drug to relieve our feelings. We get "hooked" on others who make us feel high or good or sexually alive. Through an understanding and conscious tempering of our desire nature, we develop a healthy will to feel, with a willingness to enter fully into life and commit to involving with an open heart in a non-reactive, caring manner.

Much of our feeling/relational life emanates from the sexual center of our organism. When activated and flowing smoothly, there is an abundance of life force and an increase in physical stamina that is accompanied by a sense of well-being or quiet bliss. If these issues are unresolved, our feelings can make us appear frantic, too needy, or overly sensitive. Or extreme, uncontrollable sexual urges accompanied by negative emotions, such as jealousy or rage can consume us. You may even have a shadow who acts out dramatically or goes passive/aggressive in order to gain attention, through hysterics, outbursts of rage, or indirect ways of rebelling against significant others who do not meet your needs -- a powerhouse of repressed emotions.

Glamours and ideals packed with feeling are prevalent in this astral world of human feeling-run-amok. More subtlely, because you feel passion for your way of life or study, you may have an ego who becomes an extremist, with an arrogance or unwillingness to learn from others, believing you are further along your path than you truly are. In the worst cases, it can bring about fanaticism and complete self-immolation, as evidenced by the terrorists who created the 9/11 crisis. Often, it takes something this tragically obvious for Humanity to get the point -- that healing our emotional life is essential now. Remember, those of us actively on the path of Initiation not only feel things personally, we take on the feeling nature and imbalances that are apparent in our world.

Now, here’s another way emotions can become our god. Early emotional insults to your evolving soul can result in having a shadow who's a "junky" for highs: Anytime the urge to give birth to something new strikes, a compulsive "hunger" sets in, and you might mistakenly turn toward addictive pleasure-seeking instead of following your inner drive to create something. This intense longing for a "turn on" ignites you like a flame, and you start looking outside yourself toward the world's titillating materialistic pleasures, yearning to be consumed.

In romantic relationships, the shadow will take on the roles that play out these melodramatic love stories and can bury our true emotions in an exhilarated glamour: Don Juan, the seductive manipulator, the tease, the femme fatale, the hysteric, the charming sociopathic personality. These subpersonalities then become the shadow's pleasure-seekers. "I'm just a stranger passing through the night; I won't be around in the morning" is one such desperado myth. Or "I'm just 'a good-time gal.' Use me, abuse me, but let the good times roll." These pursuits often lead to the sob stories we give in to out of self pity, like these humorous country western song lyrics ridicule: "I've got tears in my ears from lying on my back in my bed crying over you." "If the phone don't ring, you know it's me."

Struggling through life seeking "highs" or looking for love or acceptance in all the wrong places is often the loneliest game in town. There is constant disappointment, rejection, lack of intimacy, competitiveness, or the need to be eternally youthful, sexy and sensational - a breeding ground for chemical addiction, romantic love or sex addiction, and co-dependence. Issues concerning commitment, faithfulness, integrity, trust, and intimacy are rampant in this mirage. There is very little security or love that can emerge until these imbalanced feeling-states. glamours, and illusions are put to rest, or at least made conscious. This is the shadow's playground!

Emotional/relational imbalances are imprinted in early childhood, usually in family systems that evidenced emotional/sexual dysfunction. As a child, you were not protected from the adults' frustrations, outrages, hysterical reactions, or sometimes even sexual/romantic melodramas which you had no way to understand. You may have become emotionally enmeshed - not knowing which feelings were yours or theirs. Or your parents' feelings may have been so explosive and dangerous there was physical abuse, and you were not allowed to feel at all. You may have "stuffed" most of your true feelings and became disassociated from them entirely. This can cause too much detachment from life’s passions and beautiful intensity of experience.

There is only one way to heal the emotional body: we must take on the issues in order to feel through them so we can know them. It’s not out, but through that we heal. Because feeling states function dynamically, our emotional healing cannot simply be talked about; the feelings must be felt through to release. Shadow work has to be experiential work. We need to revisit our past through processes such as breathwork, psychodrama, emotional-release work, guided imagery, deep bodywork, music/movement therapy, and other such methods that access and allow expression of the pent-up feelings in our cells and in our hearts we've been trying to ignore. In a setting where we feel safe and supported, painful feelings can be emptied out, like squeezing toothpaste out of a tube.

Once released, we can see our life situations with the pristine clarity that naturally ensues when we live from the center of our minds. Then, by our new way of meeting these emotional crises – with love, wisdom, and compassion – we transform them, not only for ourselves, but for our world. As Dr. Carl Jung reminds us: “Nothing we ever do is just personal.” Every time you heal some aspect of your personal self, you’ve brought a little more light to that area of Humanity’s suffering. Remember, the shadow can only integrate by becoming known. And as your true Self, you are always greater than any condition or negative experience you've been subjected to. “The Self is greater than its conditions” is an excellent principle to follow.

As we learn more about ourselves we'll realize that attraction and desire are the roots of Divine Love, which is our very nature, and these feelings ebb and flow naturally from within us constantly. When you can let yourself act from this inborn love nature, rather than running on fear of it or of not getting enough of it, you will advance on your path: Your natural talents and interests will become a fascination, and a wild love affair will ensue between you and your inner Beloved. You'll burn with a desire for something you long to create from within your own Self. This love can be expressed in a relationship, a career, some product or artistic expression, or in your life's work or area of service that really inspires you. These true feelings of "in loveness" have a powerful healing effect upon the psyche. Like the true artist, poet, or mystic, we can give this sacred creative energy permission to express creatively through us. And believe me, if invoked, it will!

Allurement draws us all to our destiny by pulling us toward the people and projects representative of our true expression. This is the sacred Law of Attraction in operation in our lives, which functions in this world through its essential qualities of Love and Wisdom. In case you've never noticed, it is only through this principle of Attraction that our desires compel us to relate to anyone or anything so we can become loving and wise, which is truly all that ever gratifies our soul. When we violate this Law, we feel unhappy or dead, for the Law of Attraction is a keynote for earth life. In Joseph Campbell's words, we must all learn to "follow our bliss."

People who make it through the second "gate of Initiation" and come out the other side in one piece (for the trials are great since we feel them all!) are people who have withstood the tests of the extremes - and are now able to function in the world in the midst of uneasy conditions without losing much poise or force. They are now imbued with the quality, Goodness: a love nature that is grounded in wholeness and truth. Goodness is godliness - it is high love! And here is the revelation we receive when we take the Second Initiation: We see that all our desire for the “highs” in living is the search for our own being. When your second chakra balances, you can be trusted to act from your heart. Now based on a limpid and non-reactive emotional body no longer ridden by needs to be defensive or intense, your mind can relax and turn toward matters of a higher order.
