Heartache

“One of mother’s phrases still haunts me. This string of words became a keepsake I cherish in memory, a tiny sliver of her poetry that inhabits my soul. She said, “Sometimes the heart must break before it can open.”
This sentence, uttered by Amanda to Parker, in my new book, has become a poignant theme of my spirituality of the moment. Perhaps it is because my beloved 17 year old cat, Freya, died this year on the day of hearts, St. Valentines Day. Palpably real was my heartache the moment my husband, Gene, was admitted to the hospital with heart palpitations only a few weeks ago. Life and death moments exist within the silence between each beat of the heart.
The heart breaks open, breaks free, breaks with realization and wonder. Within the breaking is the ache, the undeniable sign and symptom of its opening. The force of a beating heart, stretching muscles within the organ of life, contracts, expands, and opens to more experience, more love. To open is to break. We break down and through and we find that the ache reveals our heart’s knowing. And again, at the bottom is love, only love.
Brave Hearts
We have such brave hearts filled with wisdom. Too often, we pay attention to the ramblings of the mind as we attempt to explain the feeling heart. The heart holds all the hurt, the wonder, the bottomless well of the dual realities of love. My heart aches as I write, and continually, I ask why. But there are no answers to the aching heart. Only deflections of the mind respond, for the heart simply goes on feeling without analysis.
Corinthians instructs us that love is patient and kind, bearing all things. It endures all the suffering, cloistering the ache of love lost and love found. We carry it all in our heart. The mind is such a great convincer of otherwise, telling us love is gone, it’s ended, it is no more. That is the lie we all try so hard to believe when circumstance commands us. The mind is often foolish; the heart is forever wise.
Heart Crossings
To open the heart is to cross a threshold that leads to the soul. The mystics tell us the seat of the soul is within the heart. It is where our spirits draw strength and find rest. The heart is the most honest and real aspect of ourselves. That is why we often fail to listen and follow its urgings. We fear what our heart knows. The opening of the heart, and its accompanying ache, happens when we face our fear of the heart’s wisdom. Opening is the act of listening to the heart. It arises from our longing for wholeness, the broad expanse of ourselves that the heart knows.
With visualization practices I’ve helped others perceive their wounded hearts. We have placed our spirit hands within the heart and found the scar tissue of old hurts that failed to heal properly. I’ve witnessed courageous effort to follow the instructive flow of such heartache. With the pain comes the gift of a lesson learned. But these days, I find I’m de-emphasizing the importance of understanding the pain. Because the mind in all it’s power doesn’t have the correct tools for entry into the soul’s knowing. To feel the aching heart is perhaps, enough. To allow the ache to simply be available without analysis opens us to healing at the level of the soul.
To feel is to heal. Without obsession for the explanation of the feeling. What could be more brave? To feel everything is the path of healing a wounded heart. When we allow the heart to ache, forgiveness and peace follow, and love abides. Healthy hearts radiate this kind of compassion, which arises out of such true feeling. These hearts experience freedom from the need to nurture old wounds. To feel the ache is to let the wounded bird free of its cage.
To love is to burn, to ache, to open to the bliss of being alive.
The ache is voice of the heart.
Listen.
