The Tarot of Oz
review by Bonnie Cehovet, TE
Author: David Sexton
Illustrator: David Sexton
Llewellyn Publications
2002
ISBN #0-7387-0089-4
David Sexton is the creator of the “Winged Spirt Tarot”, a published author and playwright. In “The Tarot of Oz”, he makes use of the analogy of the “yellow brick road”, from the “Wizard of Oz” (by L. Frank Baum) and the Fool’s (or Hero’s) journey in the Tarot. We can all remember the lessons that the heroine, Dorothy, learns along the way, along with archetypal companions the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow.
In his introduction notes that both the Tarot and the Yellow Brick Road move us forward in understanding ourselves, and the world around us.
“The Tarot of Oz” follows the traditional Tarot format, with 78 cards, traditional titles for the Major Arcana (with Strength as VIII and Justice as XI. The suits are Wands, Cups, words and Stones. The Court Cards are Princess, Prince, Queen and King.
The LWB (Little White Book) that accompanies the deck shows the cards with a small black and white scan, The cards carry sub-titles representing characters from the “Wizard of Oz” series. Each card presents the story of the character(s) on the card, and relates it to the archetypal lesson. No keywords are given.
Two spreads are presented in the Appendix: a nine card Yellow Brick Road spread, and the traditional ten card Celtic Cross spread.
Two extra cards come with the deck: one card show the positions of the cards within the Yellow Brick Road spread, and one card shows the questions associated with each position of the Yellow Brick Road spread.
The cards come in a yellow and white “lift top” box, and are 3” by 4 1⁄2 “, of good quality, glossy card stock. The backs of the cards carry a white background, with a circle in the middle. The circle is yellow, with a green inner circle. A yellow “Z” is superimposed on the green circle. (This creates a “Z” within an “O” theme.) Smaller circles sit at each sie of the large circle, with suit symbols superimposed on them. The top circle is pink, and carries the symbol for Wands (fire). The circle on the right hand side is green, with the symbol for Stones (coin). The circle on the bottom is gray, with the symbol for Swords. The circle on the left is blue, with the symbol for Cups. The backs are not reversible. The circles ofr the four suits have the suit symbols on either side of the circle.
The card faces show a white background, with the same colored circles and the symbol “Z” (the “Z” within the “O” theme) that appears on the back of the cards. The middle of the card shows a small scene, with the card number and title appearing across the bottom. Under the title, in smaller letters, is the character represented on the card. The Fool is associated with Dorothy, he young heroine taking the journey of enlightenment.
The colors used are pastels, and the art style is somewhat whimsical. The suits are color coded, with Wands being lilac and lavender; Cups aqua, blue and yellow; Swords red and gray; and Stones green and blue.
Several cards in this deck drew me to them … the first one being the Fool, represented by Dorothy, wearing a pink dress and hair ribbon, red shoes, and carrying a red rose in her right hand. He dog Toto jumps at her feet. The Magician is represented by the Wizard of Oz, the Priestess by Glinda the Good, the Emperor by the Tin Woodman, and the Hermit by the Shaggy Man. The lantern that the Hermit holds up carries a symbol of fire, rather than the traditional six pointed star.
This is a charming deck, and while not a deck to use to learn the Tarot(there are no traditional symbols), anyone could read with it if they had a basic knowledge of the Tarot.
