I have been diagnosed with osteopenia and at age 58 my doctor wants me to change my exercise routine from distance running low impact exercise. What would you suggest?

Dear Mary,

You are one of many baby boomers who are realizing that the exercise routine that was perfect for them in their youth may be causing damage later in life. At 50 years or older, we discover that our knees are giving out or our muscles ache. It’s time to make a switch.


Have you thought of pole walking/ No not pole dancing – that too would be low impact and a lot of fun.


Pole walking involves the use of modified ski poles without the baskets at the ends.


The walker plants the ski poles in opposition to their foot motion. This motion exercises the upper body, abdominal and leg muscles. The poles allow for stability.


The walker grips the pole handle and extends the pole forward and plants it while the arm is in a handshake position. The walker then pushes the pole firmly while stepping forward. This is a great way to get upper arm or tricep muscle exercise. Even though the poles are not heavy there is some resistance due to their weight thereby exercising wrists as well as arms. Wearing gloves can help to avoid blisters. Pole walking is really catching on. I notice more and more people enjoying this form of exercise.


As soon as women threw out their synthetic hormones after the NIH study showed there were some dangers associated with synthetic hormone replacement therapy, HRT sales plummeted. Drug companies lost millions of dollars. Then in an effort to recoup losses, advertising for various bone density prescriptions hit the airwaves. These drugs claimed to build bone density and prevent osteoporotic fractures which account for over a million fractures per year. According to statistics over 30 million Americans either have osteoporosis or are at risk for the crippling disease. But these osteoporosis drugs come with side effects such as, heartburn, chest pain, difficulty breathing, stomach problems or the drug can actually burn holes in the esophagus.


Some people have even developed bone loss in the jaw, also called osteonecrosis as a result of using these medications. Symptoms include jaw pain, loose teeth, gum infection or a slow healing following dental surgery.


My friend Donna is now waiting to have three tooth implants as a result of taking osteoporosis drugs for the past ten years. Sue Ann a flight attendant who took a similar drug was told by two dentists to discontinue use right away or her “jaw bones would turn to chalk.”


This group of drugs contain bisphosphonates the same chemical used in bathtub cleansers. This chemical is designed to alter the cycle of bone formation and breakdown in the body.


Bone loss is related to declining hormones. Estrogen and progesterone are both necessary for bone density. Weight bearing exercise, absorbable calcium, a good diet and digestive enzymes all play a vital role in keeping bones healthy and strong.
