Motivation-Need-Success-Money

Money-money-money! When does it not cross your mind? Name a day that passes by when you are not confronted with financial realities. It is an important subject to most of us in life, especially in western society. It is an important subject in astrology.
As a newbie astrologer a few decades ago, I was driven to become better and learn more, largely because I wanted to study horoscopes of successful people and see if there was an astrological signature of commonality that I could compare to my own horoscope. From my earliest years I always had a passion for achievement and I suppose I was driven to study astrology in a serious to see if I had “the signature” if there was one to be found. I now have thousands of horoscope analysis under my belt and having studied so many of them, I’ve gained a pretty clear perspective on the signatures of motivation, success, and prominence in a horoscope.
Denouncing the 2nd House?
When we are talking about success and money, traditional astrology has always pointed us first in the direction of the 2nd House. One of the first things that I found out, as far as economic prowess is concerned, was that I had to throw out the tradition in those older books that suggested that the sole focus of one’s income potential is seen in the analysis of the 2nd House, its ruler and any planets in it. The traditional thinking is that you take the ruler of the 2nd House or a planet in it (a significator) and measure the aspects to it. Early astrology suggested that trines and sextiles were “good” aspects so if the 2nd House significator had “good” aspects, there was a suggestion that the income potential is fortunate or promising. Here are two very good examples (of hundreds) showing the unreliability of the premise.

The 2nd House in this horoscope is ruled by the Sun, which is squared by Mars, Saturn and Uranus. This Sun, traditionally speaking, is poorly placed by Sign and receives substantial tension. There is nothing “good” or “easy” about it. In traditional or classical terms, this is a very poorly placed planet in Aquarius. But it is the horoscope of billionaire, Michael Bloomberg, a man whose wealth and influence are unimaginable. Based on the 2nd House alone, indications are that his personal income potential would not be promising.

Yet another example is shown here: There is a Sun-Venus conjunction in II exactly squared by Saturn. What’s more, Uranus, ruler of II, is widely squared by Neptune. Yes, Jupiter makes a wide trine to the Sun and a closer trine to Mercury (very appropriate for this person, by the way) but if this horoscope was analyzed using traditional rules, the picture painted for the income potential shown in this horoscope would not be good. However, Oprah Winfrey, like Michael Bloomberg, is a billionaire!
The 2nd House is going to give you real precise information about self esteem but my advice is to dismiss the 2nd House as a main focus of analysis when it comes to measuring income potential. This is not to say that it should be completely discounted. Bill Gates has a Pluto-Jupiter conjunction in II. Britney Spears, whose monthly residuals bring her some $750,000 has Jupiter in II conjunct Pluto, both squared by Venus., a statement of wealth wasted but great income potential nonetheless. What you should NOT do is cast doubt or gloom upon a person’s income potential because of tension regarding the 2nd House.
Motivation and Need
There can be no success in a person’s life without the motivation to be successful and motivation comes from need. Some people need to be extra successful in order to be fulfilled and will therefore be highly motivated. Some people are easily content as long as they are paying bills, eating and have some form of physical and/or emotional love in life, they are content with things on whatever level is readily available to them (A lack of motivation is most often found when the Moon is in Taurus because the need is to establish a point of security and keep it there without making changes. When the Moon is in Aries or Leo, ego needs are heightened that often times produces the kind of behavior that attracts the kind of ego endorsement needed. The Moon in Capricorn has a focal need that needs to be influential and in charge). The latter type of person is not very motivated. The former is going to show a high degree of motivation. How do we see these symbolized in a horoscope? We start with aspects.
Success in life demands hard work, consistent effort, and resourcefulness. It takes pressure to make diamonds. The simple act of standing and walking requires that your body be 90 degrees to the surface. Otherwise you are laying down taking it easy. Sexual activity requires tension. Muscles grow and become attractive when they face resistance. They get flabby when left alone. Anyone in most any career has had to train, study, or practice for years to become good. They did not get that way from taking it easy all the time. No matter how you look at it, when you work really hard at something and focus, you get better at it and are eventually rewarded for the effort and because you’ve become so good at it. In order to do all of this hard work there must be motivation, symbolized by hard aspects (squares, oppositions, quindeciles and some conjunctions) in a horoscope.
Horoscopes of highly motivated people are usually well-dominated by hard aspects. Sextiles and trines are weak aspects that symbolize ease and contentment. Horoscopes that are without tension typically symbolize the person who is going to be more content with him or her self. I have seen exceptions - Bill Clinton is one of them. But in most cases, if the person with a horoscope dominated by soft aspects is being true to the horoscope, ease and contentment rather than ambition for achievement will rule the roost, especially in horoscopes with Grand Trines. I can think of no one in American history who has amassed more of a fortune than Bill Gates has and his horoscope has a single planetary trine. Steve Jobs, who continues to make Apple a profitable corporation, has a massive Grand Cross in his horoscope. How often have you read disaster descriptions of the Grand Cross in the older astrology books?
Aspects to the Sun and Moon
The Moon symbolizes that which is necessary for fulfillment. It is the most important symbol in astrology when it comes to describing what a personality needs to be comfortable and fulfilled. When Saturn or Mars make hard aspects to the Moon, there is a press on the needs for fulfillment that suggests a particular kind of motivation for success (Madonna, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Richard Nixon, Eva Braun, Michael Jordan, Steven Spielberg). These aspects to the Moon or Sun are often indications of motivation in its highest form.
Jupiter Pluto
If you are not familiar with midpoints, you simply must find a way to learn the technique (email me privately for lessons or consult the archives of this web site under my name for a series of essays written). Of all the factors I have seen in the horoscopes of successful people, the most common signature is that a planet, Angle or point is at the Jupiter/Pluto midpoint OR Jupiter and Pluto natally are in conjunction, square, or opposition.
Regarding midpoints, the aspects measured to midpoints are always the hard aspects but in this case, both soft and hard aspects apply. For example, Elvis Presley, who is still successful years after his death, has Mercury=Jup/Plu even though Mercury trines the midpoint.
Pluto’s hard aspects to Angles suggest a need for prominence that is often a symbol of tremendous motivation (Rush Limbaugh; Muhammad Ali; Martha Stewart).
Realism
A horoscope doesn’t make people rich, ambitious or motivational! There were surely scores of people born with close to the same horoscopes as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, etc. One might be a village farmer in Kenya. Another might be an Amish baker. A horoscope is rendered invalid as far as this subject is concerned if a person first isn’t geared towards success and achievement. There are going to be many people with the aspects or configurations listed above who do not at all reflect the signatures listed for many reasons such as a lack of parental encouragement, environmental influences, etc.. This is not a fault of astrology. It is a reminder that personal choice in the human will is what first counts, not astrology and not a horoscope. Oprah Winfrey is not successful because of her horoscope. Her horoscope shows symbols of success potential that she was motivated to take advantage of.
I have found quite often that people look at those who have massive achievements and they attribute them to luck. I have a friend whose parents used to go as far as to say, “I know _______ is successful but that wasn’t meant for you.” It’s another way of saying that that person, be it Oprah, Spielberg or whomever, was just lucky without any hard work, focus or resourcefulness involved. If you have a dream, you should never allow anyone to dilute or diminish it. In particular, if your horoscope has Jupiter/Pluto midpoint activity natally and you feel like there is something in life that you really want to achieve and you have the drive, go for it and use your horoscope advantageously.
