Moving Forward in the New Year

I got a bike for Christmas! I kept saying that to myself all day, while cooking a Christmas feast for my family. I felt like a young girl, so excited to return again to the living room to stare in wonder at my gift! This may be my favorite Christmas gift ever!
My bike represents moving forward in my creative life. This year I have begun, in earnest, a new book. I'm writing with a clear and directed channel, and like the bike, this project is propelling me forward into a new chapter of living and loving creating! However, it is tough exercise and it's slowly whipping me back into shape with sore muscles and an often-blurred mind full of too many chapter ideas.
Writing a column once a month is an ideal writing commitment, but it's a far cry from devising and shaping a book. It's similar to walking the dogs around the block versus riding ten miles on the bike path. One form of movement gets the blood circulating and the other makes you sweat.
As my friend Jan often reminds me, "Even when you are not writing, you are writing". The physicality of writing comes softly, almost imperceptibly at first and often only after months of dreaming, doodling, and imagining while staring out my window. The 'not writing' ushers in the writing just as exercise moves the body into new form and vitality.
My black and white composition books ooze with notes, diagrams, scribbles, and winding run-on sentences. I find my mind at the edge of a cliff where I am teeming with too many ideas. All I want is to jump, and unexpectedly, something tricks me over the edge where I dump it all onto the computer screen in no particular order. I just start where I start and it comes as it comes, spilling in splotches of ideas organized into symbolic typeset.
First, before the delicious outpouring, a kind of reconfiguration of self manifests with the fine-tuning of the person I am. Whatever creative endeavor I engage in, there is a moment when I change and become one with the figure of art I've chosen as my medium. It is a swift intuitive hunch that comes at times when I'm folding laundry or washing the kitchen floor. Suddenly I look up and see nothing but the ideas in front of me. I hear that voice of certainty suggesting a place to start that finally and at last, makes perfect sense.
A fascinating aspect of this creative process is that it won't come into manifestation until I come to it within myself. I must manifest it within so that I can boomerang it out beyond my secreted domains. It is then that I feel the wind in my hair and my chest heaves with labored breath as my pedaling surmounts the crest of a long hill. The knees pump on instinct as the fingertips rattle the keyboard. Inner and outer landscapes intermingle and materialize the cohesion of self.
Like the luminaries outlining the spiraling tail of Serpent Mound on the Winter Solstice, it all commences at the center of our lives, the core where all true realities alight.
Let's have a creative year of moving forward!
