Carnelian
“An amulet to stabilize emotions”

by Raven
Carnelian was one of the first stone used in Ancient Egypt and has been identified as one of the first stone of the twelve set in the Breastplate of Aaron. It was also used to carve cylinder seals and used as a burial amulet readily sculpted and engraved. In ancient times it was used to protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife.

The brownish-red to deep red form of Chalcedony is known as Carnelian, limited to the red translucent variety. The opaque brownish material is called Sard. It can be used as a pendant or placed near the door invokes protection and invites abundance into the home.

Name:

Name: Carnelian is the modern spelling to the old Cornelian. The archaic form stems back from the Latin “Cornum” – meaning cornel berry or cornelian cherry. The spelling change stems back to the fifteenth century; a mistaken belief the name originated in the Latin carneolus or carnem – meaning flesh, caused the letter “a” to be substituted.

Scientific Properties:

Color: flesh-red to brown red (Indian brown tints reddened by sun exposure), orange, pink
Hardness: 6 1/2 - 7
Crystal System: Hexagonal (Trigonal) fibrous aggregates
Chemistry: SiO2 silicon dioxide
Fluorescence: None
Uses: Mineral specimen, gemstone, ornamental use
Location: Britain, Czech Republic, Iceland, India, Peru, Romania, and Slovakia
Associated Mineral: Agate, Chalcedony

History, Myth, Legend and Lore:

Egyptians – used to carve cylinder seals and burial amulet as revealed by Papyri and the ancient burial practices, Chapter 156 of the Egyptian Book of the Dead. A prescription exists that recommends carving the contents of Chapter 29 onto the stone of the same book; the amulet carved in the form of a heart or in the form of a scarab, which was the symbol for eternal life. The belly of the scarab may contain the name of the engraved deceased. The gem was set in a ring of clay and placed on the heart of the cadaver.

300 B.C. – identified by Theophrastus as a red stone, which can either be Carnelian or Sard. Engraved on the gem was the tribe of Reuben. The children of Israel said to have brought this stone out of Egypt. As they wandered to the desert, they engraved seals in Carnelian of sacred symbols and figures.

Breastplate of Aaron – Carnelian was identified the first stone of the twelve set.

Arabic people – used Carnelian as an amulet and thought to overcome envy. The belief exists that if one is envied, one will be drained of the quality, which another covets. If one wears Carnelian engraved with the following sacred poem, one will be saved from the draining force:

“In the name of God the Just, the very Just!
I implore you, O God, King of the World,
God of the World, deliver us from he devil
Who tried to do harm and evil to us through
Bad people, and from the evil of the envious.

Moslems – Mohammed wore silver ring set with cylinder seal of Carnelian on his little finger – it was believed that any person who owns a cylinder seal of the stone could never be separated from God. Jafar, one of Mohammed’s imams, declared if Carnelian gem were worn, all desires of a man would be met. The name of Ala was engraved on amulets in Persia to preserve the wearer’s dignity and serious manner during arguments.

Japan – beads on uneven cut and length were commonly buried with the dead.

Buddha – is said to have offered a vase of Carnelian to one of the four Kings of Heaven

Aboriginals of South West Australia – wear beads of the stone strung on opossum yarn around their waist to cure all ills and by custom no woman is allowed to touch this talisman.

Zulus, Native American and central Europe lore – claim and believe that falling houses or walls will harm no man-wearing Carnelian.

Nineteenth Century author Arakel – gave proof “no man who wore a Carnelian was ever found in a collapsed house or beneath a fallen wall.

Arab countries –toothpicks made of Carnelian are used to prevent bleeding gums.

Bghai tribes of Burma – used Carnelian to form fetishes and believed they must be fed blood. The legend states - “spirits good and bad dwelt in stones and if we don’t give them blood to eat, they will eat us”. Another old tale says – “a man in one family died, and his widow in wrath commanded their son to throw away the magic stone; the stone returned shortly, bringing two other stones with it, so the widow and her son were resigned”.

Lapidario of Alfonso X – recommended Carnelian for the cure of a weak voice or timid speech. The subject was directed to hold a warm stone to give courage lacked and speak boldly. This is in line with the common belief that red stones are stimulant, which was adopted by actors and public speakers as a charmed gem.

Book of Wings, thirteenth century – Ragiel recommends engraved Carnelian and could be used to stop the flow of blood and grant honor to the wearer

Chevalier Jean de Mandeville, fourteenth century – states Carnelian is a red-colored stone, light and dark and if worn on one’s finger or neck brings peace, concord, honor and victory. The gem will restrain bleeding, and appease anger.

Sixteenth century scholar Camillus Leonardus – echoes Mandeville – “It restrains menstruous fluxes and stops hemorrhoids and assuages strife and anger.

1647, philosopher De Laet – wrote Carnelian carved in a ring has the power to stop bleeding from the nose.

King – states Carnelian rings are still made and worn in Italy. A Carnelian set in a ring makes one to be of a cheerful heart, free from fear and a good protection against witchcraft and fascinations.

Modern Practitioners – use Carnelian to relieve lethargy, depression, low self-esteem, fear and anxiety. It is also used as an amulet to stabilize emotions in the home and promote love between parents and children. The medicinal applications include the treatment of neuralagia, gallstones, kidney stones, pollen allergies, and colds. An elixir made by soaking the stone in pure water, is used to hasten the healing of cuts and abrasions.
