When Astrology Yields Unexpected Results

I have been studying and practicing astrology for so long that it is very difficult to imagine when I did not know it. But I can still recall why I became interested in it.
I was a precocious youth who grew very quickly, both physically and intellectually. This early spurt of [physical] growth placed me well ahead of everyone in my neighborhood and in school in terms of physical prowess. Not only was I “the smart kid” in school, I was athletically superior to everyone around in my age bracket and even some who were older. I was every teacher’s pet early on. In time, I expected to be the center of attention in every sphere. I was a young, walking advertisement for the Leo archetype (my Sun is in Leo).
My oldest brother had been introduced to astrology by someone in a band he played in. For reasons that I still don’t know, he pulled me aside at the age of 13 and had me read a description of Sun in Leo. I remember seeing a description that read something like, “The leader; the man in charge; the center of attention;” It seemed that every word described me as I was at that time and that is what started my interest in astrology. I thought that “if this stuff described me so accurately, I am going to learn it all so I can figure everyone out.”
As my studies became more serious, my expectations grew. I remember thinking how fantastic it would be when I achieved the skill level that I dreamed about. I would be able to tell anyone anything and, thus, have some sense of control that others would recognize and respond to. A great many people study astrology under the illusion that mastering it will manifest in some sense of superiority over others, over life.
Just as you become more humbled with life experience as you get older, the more you experience astrology and study it, the more your perspective and awareness of it matures. As someone who has studied it since age 13, I can tell you, for sure, that astrology does not always work in the idealistic way that many have high hopes for.
The expectation that astrology is going to be infallible 100% of the time usually comes from two thought processes: a) People are the pawns of a fate delivered by planets. b) The person’s horoscope comes before the person. If you believe that a person’s horoscope and the person are one and the same, you are invariably going to be disappointed and maybe even get a little egg on your face sometimes. This is especially true when it comes to predicting. No predictive system in astrology is accurate all the time.
Example
The most reliable way of predicting in western astrology is to use the following measurements:
a) Transit conjunctions, squares, and oppositions of Saturn through Pluto to the Angles, Sun or Moon
b) Solar Arc conjunctions, squares, or oppositions to the Angles, especially involving Saturn through Pluto.
c) The Secondary Progressed Moon’s conjunction, square, and oppositions to Saturn.
All of these measurements symbolize the potential of life-changing conditions in one’s life. In my practice it is only the life-changing aspects that I look at. Otherwise, if you get involved in everything possible, you lose focus and your analysis becomes disjointed. The average printout for a year of one’s life becomes very chaotic if you try to utilize every available measurement. Some things are not important, like any kind of sextile. Ignore them in predictive work.
It is January, 1995 when a man comes to you for a consultation. You have already run a list of his measurements and you know that the important Solar Arc semi-square (this is when every planet and point in the horoscope has arced to semi-square its natal position) is ahead that July. This mid-life aspect occurs for everyone at some point between the ages of 43-47. It represents the potential of a shift in one’s life that is kind of like a minor Saturn Return but is on a smaller scale in terms of its potential impact reflection in reality. Aside from the Solar Arc semi-square, your analysis has shown you nothing else “to get excited about” for the duration of 1995. There is certainly nothing there that would suggest a turnabout in one’s life that would change it forever, yet that is what happened to O.J. Simpson’s (July 9, 1947; 8:08 am PST; San Francisco, Ca.) life. Go to your computer and print out a list of measurements for 1995 the year when his life changed forever.
Whether he caused his own issues or not, and it certainly seems that he did, is another discussion. The facts are that his life was changed in 1995 like few lives are ever changed (Can you remember what you thought the first time they showed him handcuffed and was being questioned? I almost thought it was a joke because he had been such a larger than life, positive personality in society). And there is absolutely no suggestion of it in the measurements of his horoscope. I remember having this discussion with some of my colleagues like Noel Tyl back when the trial was taking place. All agreed that what we saw in Simpson’s life at the time was not shown in his horoscope. What this suggests is that Simpson decided to do something that was not suggested for him to do at the time (to put it mildly). Anyone can do that at any time and you are not going to see it in their horoscope.
This is not an unusual scenario in astrology. I’ve done some 250 consultations a year for a couple of decades and this is not an infrequent occurrence. What does this say about astrology? It certainly does not say anything against astrology. It says more about our expectations of astrology and the fact that there is more about astrology that is artistic than scientific. You can never be sure how or if a person is going to reflect their horoscope. The important thing to know here is that it is up to the person, not the horoscope. If I decided to go outside right now and run in front of a truck doing 50 miles per hour that is a decision that I made, not my horoscope. Yet, astrologers would look at my horoscope to see what “caused” me to do that. That decision may or may not be reflected in my horoscope but the horoscope certainly didn’t cause the decision. If your orientation is to this kind of thinking, you are going to subject yourself to disappointment. Horoscopes suggest potentials, not absolute reality.
Example 2
Please take a look at the horoscope presented here. Your eyes are immediately drawn to the large group in the 12th House that includes the Sun. You are led to think in terms that are behind the scenes, hidden, spiritual, etc. Our astrology texts are replete with information about the 12th House that can all be summarized as being murky and even difficult to quantify in relationship to other Houses.

The Moon is in the public 7th House but is obfuscated in Scorpio because of the conjunction it receives from Neptune (a presentation of the personality to the public, to others, that is not quite what it seems and this can carry charisma). What you do not get a sense of from this horoscope is the fantastic career and public projection that Mariah Carey (March 27, 1970; 7:27 AM; Long Island, NY.) has! If you had learned that this is the horoscope of a minister, you would not be surprised. If you had learned that it was the horoscope of a doctor, perhaps you would not have been surprised. But a public performer like Carey is clearly not what you would be led to think.
Carey is not at all a private person and when you see her in magazines or on television, she is almost always flaunting sexuality. (Venus-Mars Mutual Reception; exact Uranus-Sun opposition ruling V-XI axis; unaspected Venus) What can this mean in her case? Perhaps the 12th House symbolism has yet to manifest in her life (Please see Ronald Isley’s horoscope. Ronald Isley’s voice is one of the most influential voices ever in R&B music. The data is May 21, 1941, 7:25 AM; Cincinnati, Ohio. Isley is serving house arrest for tax fraud in a hospital where his health is in critical condition) Madonna, too, has a 12th House emphasis that shows itself in her spiritual leanings the Kabala, etc. In my opinion, Carey’s horoscope shows high potential for the development of critical illness concerns, especially when transiting Pluto moves to square the exact Uranus-Sun opposition. In all probability, the 12th House dimensions will manifest later in her life.
The point here is that Carey’s horoscope does not initially show you what you would expect to see. This doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with astrology. It means that you must first know the person and then apply what you know to the horoscope.
The Artistic Touch
The application of astrology to human beings requires an artistic touch, not scientific certainty. In mundane astrology where you are working with the horoscopes of nations, astrology shines brightly. But when working with individual humans, you must be aware that a person can choose to live life as they please and do what they want when they want and astrology will not always capture it. Astrology shows the path. It is a great piece of wisdom to know and understand that people do not always choose to follow the path that is best for them.
Astrology has many measurements and many points of view in terms of application. That does not mean that you have to use all or even most of it when you are dealing with a person’s horoscope. You must see what the person is about and then synthesize that with what you see in the person’s horoscope. It requires an artistic touch, not scientific certainty.
