Venus Mourns
|
|
|
by Carin Martin |

". . .The goddess [Venus] is represented in mourning when, in its annual course following the 12 signs of the zodiac, the Sun enters the lower hemisphere...The days shorten and Venus is believed to be in mourning, as if the Sun were lost, carried off by a temporary death and held by Proserpine.'
Porphyry, Saturnalia (I, 21, 1-6)
"When sorrow comes, they come not single spies, but in battalions"
Hamlet, Act iv, Sc.5
"Martha Stewart was caught in a simple lie, the evidence so compelling and her attorney's 20-minute defense testimony so curt-Martha's too smart to do this-that after five weeks of testimony, a jury of eight women and four men needed less than three days to deliberate. . . .U.S. Attorney David Kelley insisted that the government was not singling out Martha Stewart for prosecution to make an example of her in an era of spectacular corporate corruption. Take him at his word. But Stewart was no ordinary Jane who traded on inside information to make a quick buck. Her tabloid celebrity, her status as a walking, talking brand name, and her role as CEO of a publicly held corporation turned what would otherwise have been a simple case into a treacherous web of legal and corporate issues. And at almost every turn, she and her advisers made the wrong move, getting her deeper and deeper in trouble."
Daniel Kadlec, TIME
As I write this, I hear a commentator on television stating that the moment the jury found Martha Stewart guilty, she lost 30 million dollars. As I look at Martha's natal chart and think of her public personae, it is painfully obvious to me that her loss is far more costly than 30 million dollars. The news, the commentators, the comedians are all having a field day with this court decision against the so called "Domestic Diva." Even this media nickname is just a minor part of the mean spirited "humor" that we are barraged with daily. Whether you feel the ruling is just, or not, there is no arguing that our culture makes gods and goddesses of personalities, then sadistically enjoys watching their fall from grace. It is a media parlor game that is created by an ever-unquenchable need for entertainment and pseudo excitement. Elevate someone to the pantheon of public homage until envy over comes the collective psyche. Then, the icon becomes the sacrificial lamb. "As he was valiant, I honor him. But as he was ambitious, I slew him."
I have heard the comment many times that Martha's "personality" more than any other factor is responsible for this personal calamity. This judgment merely adds insult to injury since it is exactly her personality that is the main factor for her success. It is true that the adage that "character is destiny" is aptly applied by the belief system of astrology. This is why so many people continue the study of their natal charts through out their lives. Human beings are complex entities. We are not only a mystery to each other, but a mystery unto ourselves. We rarely can see ourselves as others see us. For example many love to play the astrological parlor game of sun signs. For example a cheerful, Leo states, "I'm a natural born leader." Someone is sure to reply- "Yeah, bossy with a temper like a lion on steroids!"
Or-Virgo, "I have organizational abilities as well as a precise attention for detail." Reply - "Right! Anal retentive, annoying, fussy Virgo!"
Or-Libra "I need to think about this, you know fairness is my credo." Reply- "Like forever! Wishy washy, indecisive Libra!"
Even this sort of sarcastic astrological parlor game can be enlightening. It highlights the various interpretations of the very same qualities in one individual personality as seen from different perspectives. Yet unlike popular culture, astrology celebrates diversity. The sun sign game helps us to understand that people are aiming for the positive first statement while others around them may only see the negative reply. Unlike unrealistic, pop psychology, astrology recognizes that it takes many diverse personalities to make society function. How dull a world it would be without theatrical Leo, how chaotic without organized Virgo, how cruel and unjust without balanced Libra energies.
The full truth about "character is destiny" astrologically is that a major fall from grace is the combination of character <the natal chart> and "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" <the effects of current transits upon the natal chart>. Lets try to get a different view of this situation by looking both at Martha Stewart's natal chart and the transits that were equally responsible for this scandal.

We have the Sun in the sign it rules, Leo, Scorpio rising, and Sagittarius Moon. This natal chart speaks volumes in explaining much of Martha's behavior that has been criticized and lampooned by the media. Leo is so often accused of arrogance. Certainly it can be so at times, but then Leos are intended to be supremely self-confident. Other signs' perception of arrogance often baffles the Sun <ego> ruled Leo. It can be argued that if more people had a healthy Leo ego there would be less problems in the world. Isn't it often the case that passive aggressive behavior causes more difficulties in human relationships than blatant confrontations? With Leos you almost always know where you stand. I can also unequivocally state that in these many years of practicing astrology, Leo women face far more criticism than do Leo men.
Certain sun signs fit better with our societal preconceptions of gender. Aries and Leo women are often perceived as unseemingly "aggressive" which is still deemed to be "unfeminine" in our culture. Our culture seems to forget Kali, Diana, and Artemis amongst other archetypes of powerful, assertive women. The same gender stereotyping effects men of certain sun signs in western culture. Virgo men are often accused of being "fussy." Cancer or Pisces men can be as perceived as "overly emotional" and, it goes without saying, that these traits are considered "unmanly" by society in general.
I have also found that the sign Leo, man or woman, is the object of envy more often than any other sun sign. Leo has the gift for "self joyousness" and "self celebration." The Leo poet Walt Whitman said it best with his "I sing a song of myself." Indeed they do revel in their own accomplishments but it is less about boasting and more about their sense of astonishment and child like surprise. They seem to say," wow, look what I did, Mommy?" After all they are following their nature since Leo rules the 5th house of children and creativity. And Leos do have a boundless capacity for the pure joy of living. Their joyous sense of self frees them from many of the petty inhibitions and self doubts that other signs experience. Are they often bumptious and clueless? Yes, but at their heart of hearts they really want others to be just as joyous as they, themselves, are, thus they display extreme generosity of self and resources trying to bring joy to others. This sense of joyousness causes more vitriolic envy in some people than Libra's attractiveness, or Capricorn's money, or Gemini's wit. As Celie told Shug in "The Color Purple", "Some people don't like to see nobody be too free. . . "
Does Martha behave more "arrogantly" than other powerful business people? More than Donald Trump? I think not. But "The Donald" is not only a Gemini but a male. Have you watched the "Apprentice" lately? Trump to the winning team of apprentices," Your prize will be to have a picnic at my estate in Westchester, the nicest home in New York State." Jeepers, Mr. Trump on your very own lawn? Goshes, golly, gee, poor lil ole Oliver-Twist-me noshing a sandwich on your sanctified lawn? " I cannot think of a Stewart comment that matches this unabashed egotism.
Do you remember how much comment there was about Michael Douglas's ruthless character in "Wall Street" when he said, "Greed is good"? Well, that was merely a character, Donald Trump actually said, "The point is that you can't be too greedy." If Martha had said it, we would be reading it again for umpteenth time along with her humiliating conviction.
Donald shares the same Moon sign as Martha. Moon in Sagittarius. Ah, Sagittarius, but for all their love of learning and spiritual questing, there is still one personality trait that many Sun, Moon, Mercury, or Mars in Sag share. And that is what I call the "gumball" effect. A thought pops into their mind and then immediately pops right out of their mouths with no more forethought than a gumball machine. Sag is famous for their blunt, guileless comments. Then Sag stands there like a deer in the headlights, wondering what made you so upset. When it is the Moon in Sag like Donald and Martha, then these blunt comments "pop" out when they have been wounded or offended emotionally. She is often accused of making harsh comments to her staff when something is not to her liking. No doubt that is so, but as Barbara Walters once said, "If it's a woman, its caustic; if it's a man, it's authoritative."
This Sun/Moon fire combination makes Martha ardent and dramatic, but also inconsistent emotionally and highly temperamental. Creativity, exuberance, and reserves of energy are also part of this combination. She chose a perfect field to express her Leo love of luxury and her Sag inquisitiveness and love of teaching. The fact that her Sun, Mercury, and Pluto are in the 9th house, the natural house of Sagittarius, merely adds to the power of the Sagittarius Moon's qualities of curiosity, playfulness, learning and novelty.
All of these traits from her Leo Sun and Sag Moon made her the success she has become, but they have also created resentment in others. How about the Scorpio rising? This is a most interesting ascendant. This ascendant is perhaps the most mesmerizing and yet one of the most off-putting of all ascendant signs. The Ascendant represents how we project ourselves to others, essentially the first impression we make. The rising sign can tell us why we draw or repel people at first meeting. With Scorpio rising or Pluto <ruler of Scorpio> conjunct the ascendant-one is either compelling, or sexy, or intimidating. Martha's Scorpio rising is at 10 degrees square to her Sun in Leo. So the first impression she makes is of a secretive, reserved, powerful person and not the gregarious, childlike Leo that is her Sun, her basic core personality. Though she has made this "power ascendant" work for her in her career, it is at odds with her basic Leo nature. In her youth her ascendant added the sexiness she needed to be a successful model and commercial actor. In her business career Scorpio rising gave her that intimidating edge so often needed to command respect. It also adds Plutonian mystery to her allure as well a shrewd secretive side to her dealings with others. The self assured Leo Sun plus the obstinate, commanding Scorpio rising are a powerful combination.
Also note that Pluto, the ruler of Scorpio is conjunct her Sun. In many columns here I have mentioned how such a conjunction of an outer planet gives a dual quality to the character of the personal planet it conjuncts. She is Sun in Leo but she can switch to qualities of Sun in Scorpio, especially when in crisis. Leo is not vindictive, Scorpio certainly can be. Leo could learn to be more discreet, Scorpio is secretive. Also, an outer planet conjunction of the Sun shows itself more prominently in the personality in later life. In her youth most saw Martha as the sunny, confident Leo she can be. But as she matured and her authority and responsibility expanded, so did the perception of her as a powerful, enigmatic Scorpio.
Her Moon in the 2nd house is not only lucky for making money but also shows the love and value that money holds for her. Unfortunately, by degree it is opposed by natal Uranus, thus money can arrive out of the blue and disappear just as suddenly. And the quincunx of Saturn to her 2nd house Moon just indicates the well-known lack of financial security she had during her formative years, and that she worked hard for her success. Saturn is also indicative of her disciplined childhood as well as her enormous reserves of self discipline. Saturn quincunx the Moon restricts her emotional expression as well. With secretive Scorpio rising < the self she projects > and regal Leo Sun, as well as Saturn repressing the emotions, why was her stoic reaction to the verdict a subject of criticism? It is certainly no surprise to the astrologer.
Saturn is in the 7th house. This is traditionally known to cause one to have discord and sorrow with business and marriage partners alike. But Saturn here also indicates a fear of disappointment from others, rightfully so since disappointments are common with this placement. Thus, one is often cautious and reserved in ones dealings with others. Saturn here also indicates harsh betrayal from those who are closest, those who have the power to be truly hurtful. It is well known that Martha's husband left her after twenty-nine years of marriage only to marry her personal assistant. Regardless of the causes for the divorce, for her husband to leave and marry her personal assistant is indeed a major betrayal and must have been humiliating. The 7th house represents "open" enemies as well. I have no doubt that as more information is gleaned from this trial, we will hear of more personal betrayals by those Martha holds dear.
Martha's Mercury <thinking> is in the sign of Cancer. What better Mercury to have for someone called the "Domestic Diva." Cancer, ruled by the Moon, and the ruler of the 4th house of home, served Martha well. Even her detractors cannot take away the fact that she has archived and reinvigorated old customs of the home and hearth that were in danger of becoming lost in our modern world. Cancer reveres the past and all that represents home, security, and comfort. Since Mercury rules the thinking, Mercury in Cancer is not the most logical of Mercurys. It is highly emotional and prone to take offense at slightest of transgressions.
Finally, and certainly not last, Martha's Venus is in the sign of Virgo in the 10th house of career and recognition. This is the planet that she has projected most to those in her audience, the Venus love of art and refinement, and the comfort and joy of fine living. Sensuality projected through the love of art in all things. Social commentators have for years remarked on how she has improved the quality of life through her teachings for all segments of the society. She so often proudly speaks of her financially meager roots in Nutely, NJ with a nostalgia only a Mercury in Cancer can muster. Interestingly, when she chose to franchise her name to a line of household goods, she did not choose a major upscale department store, she chose K Mart. It was the smart move financially, but also, this choice acknowledged the fact that people with modest incomes also desire taste and decorum in their homes. Prior to her products in K Mart, the affordable selection of "a touch of Venus" was meager in the market place.
The sign of her Venus, Virgo, her 10th house career and fame planet, is doubtlessly a major source of all the horror stories about her verbal cruelty and rudeness. Virgo in Venus's purpose is to create beauty and, in Virgo, to create it with the utmost perfection. It is her eye for beauty that drove her success but her obsession for perfection that has created so much controversy. But astrology demands that we remember that it is these very same qualities that made her magazine and television show so interesting. Virgo is high strung, it is demanding, it strives for perfection. But just as these qualities lead to her critical <Virgo> off hand <Sagittarius> brutal <Mars in Aries> remarks with employees and coworkers, I am sure her Goddess of Perfection, Venus in Virgo, has made her her own harshest critic as well.
Her Mars is in its ruler, Aries, which makes one impatient, tactless, and it can be ruthless as well. On the other hand, it is also the Mars of pioneers and fearless innovators. Her natal Neptune is in the 11th house of the collective. Here we have the classic fame 11th house placement that I have mentioned in previous columns. Neptune, the planet of idealism and illusion, connects all of the abilities of her other placements and projects them to the public in a larger than life image <Neptunian illusion>.
Martha's teaching Sag Moon, her driven Aries Mars, her Jupiter in Gemini communication abilities, her Mercury in Cancer focus on the home and family, her Sun in Leo charisma, her Venus in Virgo goddess of perfection in the 10th house of career all "jell" to create dreamy veils of Neptunian idealism for the public. People were drawn by this placement to project their own ideals of a perfect home and life style onto Martha's' 11th house Neptune. Notice that Martha's teachings are all about the material, the home, the decor, the food, the crafts, even pets, but never children or spousal relationships. She wisely stuck to what she knew and what interested her. Also, by focusing on the externals, people could be pulled into an idealization of their own personally constructed creation. Ideal homes do not, of course, exist. After all it is the relationships, the spouse and the family that are the truly tough work of a successful home.
When people delved into her personal life, they did not like what they saw. They found the divorce, the estrangement from her daughter, the less than homey atmosphere of her driven corporations. These revelations in print accused Martha of being a hypocrite. Because she displayed the perfection of the trappings of a genteel life style, they assumed she should have the perfection in all aspects of her home life. One wonders how the general public thought Martha would have the time to be so successful in business and the media AND play the fifties perfect mom and wife at home. The disappointment of the public had more to do with their own childish naivete and less to do with any hypocrisy on Martha's part.
It is interesting to note that recent polls show that those under 40 feel Martha should serve prison time and that those over 40 are vehemently against it. Is it the corruption of age and the idealism of the youth that causes this gap in opinion? Or is it the wisdom of experience that leads the mature people to realize that most people would protect their interests and warn their friends and family if this is indeed what occurred here.
So we have the "character" part that lead to Martha Stewart's destiny. These very same traits lead to her phenomenal success as well as to this recent calamity. Scary how that is often the case, isn't it? But what about the transits?
In June 2003 when Martha was indicted Jupiter was conjunct her Leo Sun and sextile her warrior Mars. Jupiter conjunct the Sun <ego> is a classic transit of over confidence. And Jupiter sextile Mars, one's planetary warrior just adds fuel to the fires of over confidence. "I feel lucky so just bring it on!" At the same time though transiting Saturn, the planet of harsh realities, the "old reaper of pay back," was opposing her second house Moon. Money and resource losses are unavoidable with this one. Yet transiting Saturn was in a trine to her natal Neptune in the 11th house of fame. This led her and those around her to feel that she was invulnerable to the charges against her. The transits lulled them into a delusion of denigrated the seriousness of the charges. The deceptive energies added to the over confident, unrealistic expectations and the poor decisions that made at that time.
Lets look just at the two major transits occurring to her natal chart during the jury's deliberation period. Martha was declared guilty on March 5, 2004.
Two major transits were occurring for her. From the 1st through the 5th transiting Jupiter was square her natal Jupiter. Jupiter has to do with finances, resources of all kinds from money, to property, to innate talent, to support from others- resources in the broadest sense of the word. The square is the most difficult aspect since when one's Jupiter <natal luck/resources> is met head-on with a struggle <square> from the current Jupiter; usually one is out of luck. Jupiter at 14 degrees of Virgo is a very different energy than Martha's natal Jupiter at 14 degrees Gemini. Though Jupiter is known as the "Great Benefic", this Santa Claus of the zodiac carries an equally powerful negative potential as well. EXCESS.
With Jupiter square Jupiter one's sense of proportion can become way out of balance. One over estimates one's resources and most often this leads to massive shortages of resources of all kinds from money, material, opportunity <another Jupiter realm> to support and, most unfortunately, spiritual solace. Here, in this case, we have interesting connections with the signs involved. Jupiter in Gemini has the gift of gab. One with this natal placement can literally "talk a dog out of a butcher's truck" and usually does so with success most of their life. That is the thing about difficult transits, they can be terrifyingly unpredictable. A life long mode of behavior can be rendered powerless by the overwhelming energies of a transit of a planet with opposing energies. Transiting Jupiter in Virgo wants the "facts, mam, only the facts." Glib, facile, Gemini explanations will not suit Virgo who will scrutinize everything with microscopic detail and draw its own conclusions.
Lets also note a theme here-Jupiter is the planet that rules Martha's "lucky" Sagittarius Moon in the 2nd house of finances. From Dec 2003 through Feb 2004 Jupiter in Virgo was squaring her natal Moon in Sagittarius. A square from the "Great Benefic," AKA Mr. Excess, to Martha's natal Jupiter planet of luck, resources and opportunity and a square to her Moon, the planet of emotional security, nurturance and located in the 2nd house of money and resources - was a triple whammy that lead to over confident misconceptions.
The other major transit may be the saving grace for her when the Jupiter square is out of orb. From March 1 through August 2004 transiting Neptune in Aquarius is trine to her natal Jupiter in Gemini. Its affects along with the Jupiter square from the 1st through the 5th, merely added to the over confidence that created the problem. This is a highly idealistic and optimistic transit. So much so that no doubt Martha took risks she would never ordinarily take under usual circumstances.
When the natal Jupiter/transiting Jupiter square is out of orb and not influencing the situation the transiting Neptune/natal Jupiter influence can demonstrate its positive effects. Neptune and Jupiter good transits are gains in spirituality. People see that material considerations they felt were essential in the past, no longer seem as crucial to their happiness. Elements formerly deemed essential to security are no longer needed. A realization occurs that all these trappings have limited the expansion of one's consciousness. This transit is an eye opener since it makes one acutely aware of social injustices. Often a desire to help those less fortunate becomes a major focus. What once one believed was justice, is now viewed as cruelty. One learns that justice needs always be tempered by mercy. Let's hope as Martha learns these lessons that she, also, is shown mercy as well.
What does the immediate future hold? There are three major transits to Martha's natal chart coming in the next several months. From April 6 until June 3, Jupiter will conjunct her natal Venus. This can be a most positive transit but it will be particularly important here since Natal Venus is so prominent in her 10th house for her career and image. Jupiter conjunct Venus often brings increases in resources. It is also a transit that on its own is often connected with bringing a new love interest into ones life. In this case where so many other areas of life are the focus, it is more likely that it will bring an increase in the feelings of love for her family and friends and an increase in their love for her. Since Venus is in the 10th house of career, it may also bring to light information that will help begin the repair to Martha's reputation. It is over all a positive transit. The only down side of it is that during the transit the subject's tastes become even more refined and elegant. This creates an imperative need to be surrounded by beauty. Ugly, crude, coarse surroundings are more difficult than ever to abide. Knowing this one cannot help but hope that her sentencing in June is merciful and appropriate to the "crime." Placing her in a situation that could under this transit easily damage her health would be abject cruelty.
From June 27 until July 12 transiting Saturn will square Martha's natal Mars. This is a time where Mars will lose its energy and many set backs can occur. People will have opposing goals and will easily frustrate any attempts for progress. Mars's temper will be restricted by squaring Saturn and this leads to pent up rage. That is why this transit is often associated with health problems, which are created by rage unable to vent. There will be failures and set backs but what is important is that one realizes that they are temporary. This is essential to guard one's health. Accidents are also common with this transit, so no risks should be taken during this time period. Hopefully Martha will get good medical attention during this time , which will help ease the rage and prevent accident or illness from occurring. This is especially true from the period of July 4th through July 17, 2004 when Jupiter will once again square her natal Jupiter. One can only wish her well and have faith that her inner strength will suffice to pull her through it.
In summary, many things went into the making of this personal tragedy. A string of errors in judgment, over confidence, hubris, and poor advice- all added to the pot. But add to that, a major portion of some just plain awful astrological timing and the entire situation escalated into over kill.
Character + Transits = Destiny
Today a friend of Martha's stated that the situation has so grown out of control that it was comparable to someone "swatting an ant with a baseball bat." Many would agree with that statement. There is a third element here in all this chaos and cruelty besides natal character and planetary transits. It is an element over which Martha had no control whatsoever. Just as Venus mourns this calamity to one of her most elevated priestesses, she would tell you that Martha is as the universe created her. As with us all, there is definite room for development of spirit but the core of her nature is not flawed. The Goddess would tell you that when the complete truth is known about all that lead to this fall from grace, it will reveal that the third and equally powerful energy was also at play here - and that is plain, unmitigated "Venus Envy". But that is a discussion for another day.
