Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
What’s Your Price
|
|
 |
by Gigi Miner |
|
|
I am always fascinated by human nature. Perhaps fascinated is the wrong word. I am always perplexed by human nature. There is an old saying that “everyone has their price”. What this means is that, according to the originator of said statement, everyone can be bought if you know his or her price.
Our card this month is the Seven of Cups from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see seven cups scattered upon the clouds. Also, we see an old oil lamp, much in the fashion of Aladdin’s lamp. In the story, Aladdin finds the lamp and rubs it. Contained therein is a powerful jinni or genie. Once in possession of the lamp, Aladdin is granted his fondest desires. Most of us would jump at the chance to find such a treasure. Who would not want every wish granted? Aladdin, however, being from that culture, knows that the jinn are a very powerful race and not to be trifled with.

If you could have anything that you wanted, what would it be? The traditional Seven of Cups shows someone with the cups scattered in a dream-like cloud. The individual might be daydreaming. Having one’s heart’s desires is a tempting thing; but at what cost? What is your price? What would it take, for example, for you to sell your integrity? We are beginning a new year. This is traditionally a time where we take stock of our lives and make alterations. Most of the time, they are unimportant things such as losing ten pounds or cutting back on the chocolate, neither of which I recommend, by the way. What if you could take this New Year and make decisions that were crucial to your future? Moreover, not just a future with toys and new cars, but something deeper. Take a moment and actually consider what it is that most temps you? What is the one thing that could make you pause and consider a possible sell out?
It is human nature. We need not castigate ourselves in this little experiment, but we should know where our strengths and weaknesses lie so that we can best counter them if we need to do so. Self-knowledge is well worth the pain of seeing our image in the mirror without self-deception. In order to do that, you first have to be willing to admit that you have a dark side. The longer you deny it, the stronger it gets. When it is given place in your life, you become an integrated person, whole and full. Hiding that side of you only prevents you from becoming the real you.
So let us spend a moment with this idea. Most who would be reading this article are genuinely involved in seeking something higher in their lives. Thus, you will be the one to be bombarded with moments of weakness. If you see trouble coming from afar off, you can get out of its way. I have had the privilege to watch many people in their walks. I have always observed. I observe nature and I learn more than I can explain. I watch people and I learn which mistakes I do not want to make myself. I guess part of being human is being adept at screwing up. What is also part of being human is recovering from said screw-ups. The ultimate problem for spiritual people is not seeing the truth. Once they step through a certain door, they do not want to look back and see where they may have gone astray, so they tend to hold tight to their belief that they are on the “right path”. Many may well be. We might even consider the point of view that all paths are the correct ones. Still, it is only wise to consider the slight possibility that we have taken a wrong turn somewhere in our walk.
For some individuals, their weakness is other people. This could manifest in being too attached to certain individuals and needing their approval for each and every decision. Another could be to fit in with a certain crowd. We want so much to feel as if we belong somewhere. Humans, in general, are pack animals. It is their nature to seek out others of their kind. It dates back to survival. So, it is only natural that many people feel a deep need to be approved by the pack.
Some others need to feel secure. This can be in the pack or out of it, but it is a need nonetheless. That desire for security can lead someone to move beyond his or her sense of integrity in order to preserve his sense of security. Fear is a powerful element and not to be taken lightly. Feeling loved would fit well into this category. How many people will give up their entire life for someone that they love? In many ways, this is a noble cause…providing that it is not compromising the real you.
For some people, money is the issue. For enough money, there are people who will do nearly anything. Watch any reality show and you have an idea the lengths to which someone might go for a buck. For others still, it might be fame. I have seen otherwise spiritual individuals do nearly anything to be famous in their chosen field, so they might pursue it with reckless abandon.
No doubt, the list could go on and on. What we want is to take a few moments in this New Year and look at what our Achilles’ tendon might be. We all have one. We do not have to share it with the world. This kind of personal work is best done in solitude. Another thing that humans are is intolerant of weakness from another pack member. Where one might be supportive and helpful, another will play your weakness against you. You are the master of your destiny so do not give power to someone else by divulging your weaknesses unnecessarily. Remember, others have their own weaknesses and you need not see it to know that at some point, someone will use your own weaknesses against you.
Let us simplify this. If you have a weakness for drink, you may avoid parties where you know the host is constantly on the prowl to make sure every glass is filled. There is nothing wrong with knowing that you are so inclined and it is wisdom to avoid situations in which you might not be able to maintain your self-control. You see the trouble that could possibly be and you side step it. First, however, you have to admit to yourself that you do have said problem. If you deny that alcohol is an issue, you will continue to place yourself at the mercy of your weakness, and thus, others who might use that to their own advantage.
Let us look at our Seven of Cups. Each cup may contain something wonderful like healing. Still, another cup could contain a venomous snake. It is up to us to be cautious in our choices. It is also up to us to know what will lead us astray and to be strong enough to say, “No, thank you”. No one wants to look within and see something that they find unattractive. The fact remains, we all have some part of ourselves that we are not going to think well of and it is that part of which we should become intimately aware. Self-awareness is a gift. Honesty with self is extraordinary. Many others will not appreciate this particular gift. If you want more insight into that phenomenon, check out the archives for my article, “Crabs in a Bucket”.
Suffice it to say, you are the only one who can know what your price may be. If you know it, you then have the choice of whether to take it or avoid the temptation. You are the only person who has to live with you. Yes, you may share your life with others, but when you look into the mirror what do you see? Are you pleased with the person that resides in that shell? Or do you avoid your own eyes for fear of seeing something that you do not want to see. I have always been of the mindset that it is far easier to face down our demons than to run from them. Those little buggars are a lot faster than we. Just when you think you have lost them, they are standing on the next corner, smiling as you approach, holding out the very thing from which we run.
Our New Year is upon us. You can swear off fattening foods or you can choose something much more worthwhile as your resolution. Let self-knowledge be your pursuit this year. Let complete honesty with self be the goal. Then, when you look into that mirror as you live your life, regardless of the lines or physical visage, you can smile and be proud of yourself that you know who and what you are. There is a comfort in knowing yourself so well. Even the parts that you once thought of as “bad” suddenly become a poignant shading in a beautiful portrait. Were it not for the shadows, the light would not seem so bright. This year, enjoy your choices and all of the parts that are you. Know your price and then make the choices that will put you in charge of your life. You cannot be bought if you know what you are really worth. And you can only know what you are really worth if you see all the parts in all of their glory.
To your new year and your new life!

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
