Divination Systems: Be Your Oracle

The Divine Art of Reading Cards

by James Wanless, Ph.D

In this complex time of ours, the art of divining is complex. We, ourselves, are complex. Unlike simpler days, Reading the cards requires a new style. Rather than the old way of authoritative assertion by a Reader or by rote, simplistic interpretations, new tarot is about probing and testing, which is why I ask questions and questions in a session. By emphasizing the question rather than the answer, we explore what lies under the surface and between the words, those unobvious tell tales which drive and determine most of our lives.

In Reading for another, it's about being interactive. We all have pieces of the truth and as I say, "None of us are as smart as all of us." Bringing the Readee into the Reading empowers that person. Today is about self-navigation, each of us responsible for our own future. Interactive Readings take a person into divining their own life. The shift is from outside experts that know what is best for us and from old traditions and conventions that tell us how to be. It's about being your own oracle! Readers are only facilitators, not all-knowing psychics.

Rather than just getting a few facts and few cards from a Readee, which worked in simpler times, navigating our changing world means looking for patterns. I read for a client recently in the Massachusetts Berkshire mountains. She was obviously very together and successful, but she wanted a Reading. "Why," I asked. She responded with no special reason but for just a kind of check-in through the cards. Eventually the cards chosen showed a pattern, a pattern of Priestess-like qualities, which while very strong, also suggested that her Priestess remoteness and detachment, stemming from her childhood and leading to a successful way of surviving in the world, had led to a loneliness and malaise of unfulfillment. Once we see an archetypal source of who we are, we can begin to change. Her response to the Reading was to engage the world by joining in social activities, taking part-time jobs, and being open to relationships.

Instead of being an intuitive Reader, new tarot is more like coaching and even something like therapy. The next time you use the cards for yourself and others, it's asking questions, being patient with the cards as they unfold (my greatest adversary in doing professional consultations is time constraint), and not assuming that you know what's going on (another challenge is complacency and "entrained thinking," – conventional beliefs and theories which have held true in the past but not for the present). Be open to the patterns and fulfill their prophetic truth by taking action!

In my most recent Voyager Certification workshop, one student picked all four Aces from the
facedown Deck. In the past 22 years of doing this class, nobody has ever accomplished that. This is how she did it. She carefully looked at the cards face up, then placed them face down and with focus and intention, she picked the Aces she intended to get. Wow! So, I did the same for the all the Goddess archetypes in Voyager. My intention was to pick the Art card, symbolic of the weaver and represented by the Greek Athena. It worked! (The power of intention has no limits to its magic).

Usually, my way of "reading the cards" is to have no rules. Intuition flourishes in freedom. Intuition doesn't like fences, convention and protocol. Having said that, the only "rule" I follow in doing the tarot, is to "look for the truth, see the truth, and tell the truth." Anything else is projection of desire and denial. And what's the point of doing the cards to only see what you want to see?

However, because this student carefully used the power of intention to pick the optimum cards she desired (having selected the four Aces in four picks of cards), I was impressed and learned something. Why not try to select the cards you would like to have? Why not test your power of intention? Not only is that a great experiment about intention, but this technique forces you to focus on what you really do intend, and to have a card(s) that represents your desire.

Not all of our intentions are realized, of course. So, when this happens, be happy with whatever card you selected. Everything in life and every card is energy and a resource. Use this card as a stepping stone on your intended path. This is such a great practice for living life, as many of our intentions aren't fulfilled immediately but the object of life is to learn, utilize, and be resilient.

What I have learned from all this is about the power of being very, very motivated to realize an intention and to be completely focused on its realization. How to do that? I use a technique called the "Five Whys." For an intention to become manifest, ask yourself five times, with a different answer each time, for why you want to realize this goal of yours. To get focused, go through the Deck and pick out the card or cards that symbolize your aspiration. Look at them and feel their energy. Then carefully feel out the cards that you have placed facedown. When you get a strong feel, don't hesitate, pick it. It has been empirically proved that we make mostly correct decisions in less than a nano-second of time, way before we begin to think about it. Trust your extra-sensory perception!

And don't forget the power of belief. Because I now believe that we are super sensitive receivers and transmitters, even when it comes to picking cards facedown, the cards are more correct than ever before. Indeed, believing is seeing. Even if you don't believe, believe. Even if you don't trust, trust!
